Confessions Of A Shopaholic (2009) Full Recap
Clearly, he's beheaded. A lady named Rebecca walks near a luxury clothing store and fails to control her urge to shop there. As a child, Rebecca always looked forward to becoming an adult because she admired the way young ladies were able to buy luxury clothes and accessories whenever they wanted. Rebecca's mom, Jane, wasn't really a fan of this, and she often opted for cheap clothes, which she believed offered better quality.
Now living in New York with her friend Suz, Rebecca now works as a journalist for a gardening magazine. And even though she doesn't make a lot of money, any financial stories that have caught your eye recently, she still happens to be a shopaholic who spends recklessly on luxury clothes and accessories. One day when Rebecca arrives at work, she checks her credit card statement and realizes that she spent up to $900 on the things she bought recently. Rebecca cannot believe this because she already has a growing debt.
And she looks disappointed because some of the things she bought weren't even necessary. Shortly after, she heads to Suz's workplace and changes her clothes to prepare for an interview at her dream company, Allette magazine. Suz doesn't seem to get why Rebecca is so obsessed with the magazine, and she also asks if her friend really thinks she can cope with moving from a gardening magazine to a fashion magazine. Rebecca says she can handle it, and that she has always dreamed of working at Allette magazine since she was 14.
Suzes Rebecca good luck before she heads out. On Rebecca's way to Allette magazine, she walks near a fashion store and seems attracted to a scarf inside. Since she can't control her urge, she goes into the store to admire the scarf. As she then remembers her growing debt, she decides to walk away, but her imagination brings a mannequin to life and it convinces her not to leave without the scarf.
Rebecca falls for this and immediately heads to the checkout desk to pay for the scarf. Unfortunately, one of her cards gets declined due to insufficient funds. But instead of giving up, she runs outside and heads to a hot dog stand. Since she's in a hurry, she cuts the line and goes straight to ask the seller if he won't mind giving her a $20 bill after she writes him a check for $23.
The seller refuses to do this, and Rebecca says she needs the money to buy a scarf for her great aunt, who is sick. The seller still doesn't care about this, but another customer named Luke gives her the money so she can just leave. Rebecca looks surprised and thanks Luke, but he says it's nothing. After Rebecca pays for the scarf, she puts it on and heads to Allette magazine for her interview.
When she gets there, she learns that the role she applied for has been filled internally by a lady named Alicia. Rebecca looks disappointed and as the receptionist feels sorry for her is your Mr. Successful Saving. He tells her that there's an interview currently being held at a magazine company called Successful Saving.
Rebecca isn't really interested because it's a financial magazine, but the receptionist mentions that Successful Saving is one of the magazines under a company named Dante West Publications. He adds that working at Successful Saving might be the best way for Rebecca to get a shot at Allet, which is also run by Dante West. Rebecca likes this idea and immediately heads to Successful Saving for an interview with the editor. $20, who happens to be Luke. When Rebecca sees him, she quickly throws her scarf outside his office because she doesn't want him to know that she lied earlier.
Following this, she introduces herself and Luke recognizes her. He then asks a few questions to know if she's a good fit for the job. Rebecca doesn't seem to know much about finance, and as Luke's assistant also brings in her scarf, Luke seems disappointed. Rebecca eventually leaves the office because she knows she won't be getting the job.
When she returns to her workplace, she realizes that her boss has just closed down the company. Makes you wonder what they're looking at on the fifth floor and is letting all the workers go. Rebecca cannot believe this and she heads to her shared apartment with Suz who tries to console her. Rebecca says the job was her only source of income, but Suz believes she will get another one soon.
Almost immediately, someone calls the landline and as Suz's boyfriend Tarquin picks it up, Rebecca and Suz quickly snatch it from him. Interestingly, the caller happens to be a debt collector named Derek, who has been trying to reach Rebecca for a while so she can pay her huge debt. Rebecca has been lying to Derek for months about having different problems. Suz often backs her up.
After Suz lies again that Rebecca is in Finland, she ends the call before Derek can say anything. She then helps Rebecca calculate her debt, and they eventually realize that it's over $16,000. As Rebecca wonders how she'll pay her debt without a job, Suz tells her to consider sending a pitch to the owner of Allet magazine, Allette, to show why she's a good fit. Rebecca agrees and writes another one to insult Luke and return the $20 he gave to her.
After having a few drinks, Suz and Rebecca head out to mail the letters. The next day, Rebecca meets with her parents and laments about losing her job. Her dad, Graham, feels sorry for her and says he's sure she'll get another one soon. Jane also supports Rebecca, who suddenly gets a call from Luke.
Interestingly, Luke says he found her letter impressive and that she's definitely a good fit for the company. He also asks if she can come over to Successful Saving to see him later. Rebecca looks confused and realizes that she mailed him the wrong letter and sent the rude one to Allette since she doesn't want to ruin her chances of working at a let magazine one day. She sneakily heads into the building to find the letter before it is delivered to Allette.
After this, she heads to successful saving and meets Luke, who commends her again on the beautiful piece she sent to him. He also hires her on a three-week trial basis and assigns her a topic to write on. After Rebecca leaves work that day, she tells Suz about her new job. Suz looks surprised and cannot believe that Rebecca will start writing articles to advise people on how to save their money.
Rebecca says she can do it and Suz asks if her friend would like to be her maid of honor. Rebecca looks surprised and realizes that Tarquinn has asked Suz to marry him. The girls look happy about this and Suz continues trying to help Rebecca control her urge to shop. After watching a video on the subject, Suz encourages Rebecca to throw away anything she doesn't need and to resist the urge to shop.
Rebecca agrees to follow Suz's advice, but she still doesn't throw away her things. The next day at work, Luke reads Rebecca's latest article and seems disappointed. He says it's almost like she copied the entire article from a book. What we have here, Rebecca, is a situation in which someone and that he needs Rebecca to write it from another angle.
Interestingly, Rebecca doesn't understand what she has to do and Luke figures this out. Instead of firing her, he takes her to a conference organized by a communications company named Colemanex. He then encourages her to raise her hand and ask why the board members received a salary increase while their investors recently lost some money. One of the board members looks shocked and is unable to answer the question and Luke seems impressed.
When they leave the hall, real unvarnished stories. Luke tells Rebecca that he wanted her to ask the question because she needs to write her article from an angle that cares about their readers and tells them the truth in a way they can understand. He then tells her to go home and write a better version of the article. On her way home, she stumbles upon an ad for a discount sale at a nearby store.
Instead of going home, she decides to head to the store to buy a few things. She eventually gets into a fight at the store. And when she arrives home, she regrets going there and buying more unnecessary things. This inspires her to write a better article. There's another entrance this way.
And the next day, Luke commends her. He also asks how she'd like to have her name written next to the article when it's published. Rebecca says she doesn't want to use her name. And even though Luke doesn't understand this, he suggests publishing her article under the moniker the girl in the green scarf.
Rebecca likes this suggestion. And after the article is published, it becomes a huge hit. Days later, during a work meeting, Rebecca learns that Derek has been calling the front desk to ask about her. She looks scared and immediately lies to Luke and his assistant that Derek is her ex-boyfriend who has been stalking her since they broke up.
And this is where that ends. Luke believes this and tells his assistant to block all future calls from Derek. Rebecca looks relieved, but still feels bad about owing a lot of money. And when she visits her parents, Graham tries to cheer her up with a magic trick. Jane also tells Rebecca that she and Graham have used their savings to buy Graham's dream RV.
Rebecca looks disappointed because she's nothing like her parents who live a modest life. As Jane notices that Rebecca is sad, she advises her daughter to read an article by the girl in the green scarf about what it's really worth because it's a great piece on saving money. Rebecca looks shocked but doesn't tell her parents that it's her article. The next day at work, one of Rebecca's colleagues announces that Rebecca's article has made successful saving popular around the world.
Luke appreciates Rebecca's work and invites her to come with him to the biggest magazine event of the year. Days later at the event, everyone seems pleased to meet Rebecca because they love her article. Interestingly, Alicia happens to be jealous that Rebecca is with Luke, who she seems attracted to because she knows his family is rich. Try the blue as well and a black Veniche shoe in the size.
Shortly after, Derek calls Rebecca and threatens to find her and humiliate her if she doesn't pay her debt soon. Almost immediately, Luke comes over to talk to Rebecca about the event. He also mentions that they have been invited to a charity ball as representatives for successful saving. Rebecca seems pleased, but she suggests taking Luke shopping because she wants him to look different.
When they get to a nearby luxury store, Luke just tells the attendant what he wants. And Rebecca realizes that he actually knows how to dress well. She asks why he doesn't show it, and Luke says he doesn't want to be defined by clothes, labels, or his family. Rebecca looks confused, but Luke explains that his mom is a rich socialite, and that he's from a wealthy home.
He adds that he's not interested in the family business because he wants to succeed on his own terms. Rebecca cannot believe this. And after Luke is done shopping. They spend some time at a nearby carnival. After a while, Rebecca follows Luke back to his hotel. And as she asks about his plans for the ball, Alicia suddenly interrupts them.
She says she's Luke's date to the ball. And as Luke confirms this, Rebecca looks disappointed. However, she pretends not to be bothered about it, and she tells Luke goodbye before leaving. Just as Rebecca's cab gets close to her apartment, Suz calls her to stay away for a while because Derek is around.
Rebecca cannot believe this. But after Derek leaves, she heads home to meet Suz, who says the debt collector didn't believe the lies she told him. Rebecca then says she'll fix the situation by going to the ball so she can meet Allette and get a better paying job. She says she'll have to buy another dress, but Suz tells her to wear one of her old ones.
Rebecca doesn't seem sure about this and Suz persuades her to attend a shopaholics anonymous group. At her first meeting, Rebecca doesn't seem to understand why the other group members think there's something wrong with them. It's perfect. As she talks about the pleasure she derives from shopping, she suddenly leaves the meeting and goes to a nearby store to satisfy her urge.
The next day at the ball, things don't go exactly as planned for Rebecca, who gets mistaken for a waitress because her dress is similar to what the waitresses are wearing. She also makes a mess while trying to serve some guests, but Luke saves her from humiliation by taking her place as a waiter just for fun. Shortly after, Rebecca thanks Luke for helping her, but he says it was nothing. After talking for a while, they soon realized that they're now attracted to each other.
The next day, as Rebecca arrives at work, she sees Derek in the building and runs away from him. When she gets to Luke's office, Allette comes in and mentions that the owner of Successful Saving, Mr. West, wants her to style Rebecca for her TV debut. Rebecca looks shocked, but before she can say much, Luke's assistant comes in to tell her that Derek is around.
Luke says he'll go down to see what Derek wants, but Rebecca stops him. I'll see him. Luke's assistant also says she has called security to send Dererick away and Rebecca looks relieved. Allette then takes Rebecca to a nearby luxury store where they meet Alicia. After Rebecca selects the dress she wants, Allette tells her to try it on.
Meanwhile, Alicia doesn't like being sidelined by Allette. And as Rebecca's phone rings next to her, she answers it and talks to Derek. Later that day, Rebecca heads to a different store to pick up the dress Sue selected for her bridesmaids. Suz notices that Rebecca went shopping before coming to meet her, but Rebecca explains that Allette helped her get a dress for her TV debut.
Suz then asks if Rebecca still goes to the Shopaholics Anonymous Group meeting, and she says she does. Shortly after, Rebecca heads to her first meeting in a while, but as she's about to enter the building, she decides not to bring in her shopping bags. Luckily, Rebecca sees a woman just arriving for the meeting and begs her to keep the shopping bags in her car. The woman gladly accepts, but it turns out that she's the new group leader.
She also appears to be strict, and she takes Rebecca and the other group members to a local store to donate Rebecca's clothes. Rebecca cannot believe this. And as she tries to get the clothes back, the store owners tell her to pay for them. Unfortunately, Rebecca doesn't have enough money to buy back both dresses, so she only pays for her TV debut dress and leaves without her bridesmaid dress.
The next day, Rebecca makes her TV debut alongside Luke. Rebecca gets a lot of praise for her articles, but Dererick suddenly interrupts the show to tell the world who Rebecca really is. Rebecca feels humiliated, and Luke angrily leaves the set because she lied to him about Derek. He also implies that she's not taking her own advice, and even though she tries to explain herself, he walks away.
As Rebecca arrives home, Suz feels sorry for her. Almost immediately, Suz wearing Rebecca's bridesmaid dress, and she looks shocked. Rebecca tries to explain what happened, but Suz angrily runs to her room. Elsewhere, Mr. West calls for a meeting with Luke and his direct supervisor, Ryan.
Luke says he didn't know Rebecca was lying, but that he still thinks her articles were telling the truth. Ryan disagrees with this, but Mr. West suggests starting a new magazine that will be driven purely by the voices of its writers. Ryan looks shocked, but Luke seems impressed because it's what he wants.
However, he says he doesn't think it's best for him to run the new magazine because he'd rather start his own company. Meanwhile, Rebecca's parents show up at the apartment to pick her up. When they arrive home, Graham suggests selling his RV to pay Rebecca's debts, but she tells him not to do that.
