Fantastic Four (2005) Full Recap
Why don't you strip down and have a 100 people stare at you? Come on, Ben. Smile. A physicist named Reed and his friend Ben head to the office of a man named Victor von Doom to present a research proposal aiming to explore the effects of exposure to a high energy cosmic storm in space.
During the presentation, Reed mentions that the study could help advance knowledge about the structure of the human genome and provide cures to countless diseases. Before Reed finishes up with the presentation, Victor tells him to stop. He also mocks Reed for having big dreams and no money to fund them. Reed then mentions that he really needs access to Victor's space station for his research since its shields are designed to protect anyone inside.
Before Reed can say anything else, Victor interrupts him and asks why he should trust Reed if NASA doesn't. Reed and Ben look shocked when they hear this and they realize that Victor knows about their failed presentation at NASA. Victor jokes that he's always a step ahead of everyone else and Ben seems offended. As he tells Reed that they need to leave, a lady named Sue walks into the office.
A director of genetic research. Reed looks surprised to see her because she's his ex-girlfriend, but Victor just introduces Sue as his company's director of genetic research. He also tells her about Reed's proposal and says he'll take a large share of whatever is derived from Reed's research. Reed and Ben don't like this, but Victor says it's still a good deal for them because they're broke.
Following this, Reed and Ben agree to the deal and head toward the elevator. Almost immediately, Victor's assistant, Leonard, enters the office to ask what happened. Victor says that if Reed is right, the outcome could double the company's stock offerings. Leonard seems concerned about what could happen if Reed fails, but Victor says there's nothing to worry about because Reed is always right.
Meanwhile, Sue joins Ben and Reed in the elevator. Reed then asks if Ben can pilot the mission, but Sue says her brother Johnny has been hired to do that. Ben seems offended because he feels Johnny is a playboy who doesn't take things seriously, but Reed encourages him to be open-minded about working with Johnny. Shortly after, they meet Johnny while preparing to head to the space station, and he jokes about being Ben's boss on the mission.
Ben seems pissed, but chooses to ignore Johnny's attempts to frustrate him. He then complains about the suit they have to wear, but Sue shows up and explains that it's designed to act as a second skin, adapting to the individual needs of their bodies. Hot stuff hot and it keeps the cool stuff. Following this, they all head to the space station and are followed by Victor, who wants to monitor what they're doing.
When they arrive at the space station, Reed says he believes the shields will protect everyone inside from the cosmic storm, which is expected to hit in a few hours. Reed also tells Ben to get his suit ready so he can load the samples in space. As Ben is about to get his suit, Victor tries to insult him. Victor also implies that Reed is Ben's boss, but Ben says they're a team.
After this, Johnny helps Ben get into his suit, and they talk about the possibility of Reed and Sue getting back together. While Ben thinks it's not a bad thing, Johnny says he hopes his sister doesn't go back to Reed now that she's with Victor. Ben eventually leaves the space station to drop the samples and Reed monitors the arrival of the cosmic storm. It's been a good two years, Victor.
Suddenly, the timer speeds up and shows that the cosmic storm is minutes away, not hours. Reed looks shocked because it's not what he expected. And while Victor is about to ask Sue to marry him, he interrupts them and gives them an update. He also mentions that they need to get Ben back into the space station so that the cosmic storm won't hit him.
Just as Reed tells Ben to come back, the cosmic storm appears behind him and everyone looks shocked. Victor then tries to close the shields, but Sue says they have to help the others. Read's right. Victor says there's nothing he can do. And as Sue looks disappointed, she leaves the shielded part of the station to meet Reed and Johnny as they try to help Ben.
Unfortunately, the storm comes in really fast and hits all of them before moving past the space station. Luckily, they only pass out for a while, and when they return to Earth, they undergo a series of tests to ensure they're okay. Elsewhere, Victor faces backlash from his stockholders after the failed mission makes the news. The stockholders, led by a man named Ned, express their concerns and warn Victor that if he doesn't fix things within a week, they'll pull out of the company.
Victor is shocked by this and before he can say anything, the stockholders walk out of the boardroom. Back at the special clinic, Ben tells Reed that they were really lucky not to have gotten hurt. As Reed blames himself for making a wrong deduction about when the storm would hit, Ben tells him not to do that because no one could have predicted it. He also encourages Reed to talk to Sue and try to get back together with her.
But Reed says he cannot do that because she's probably happy with Victor, who is smart, richer, and more successful. She's got a good thing with Victor. Ben doesn't believe it matters, but Reed insists that Sue ended up with the right guy. Elsewhere, Johnny tells a nurse at the clinic that he's tired of staying indoors.
The nurse says he cannot leave because his condition is still being monitored, but he insists that he's fine. The nurse then puts a thermometer in his mouth and as the temperature reading rises, she looks worried and says that Johnny has a serious fever. Orbital system engines. It's just like the shuttle flew.
Johnny doesn't seem bothered and he invites the nurse to come with him. Shortly after, Johnny and the nurse go skiing together. While they're at it, Johnny's clothes suddenly catch fire, and the nurse looks shocked. Johnny's entire body soon goes up in flames, and as he freaks out, he lands in a small pool of water.
Johnny cannot believe what just happened to him and the nurse also looks shocked because he still seems okay and unheard. Elsewhere, Leonard informs Victor that the company's stocks are rapidly declining. Victor seems bothered and tells Leonard to get him on any available shows so he can do some damage control. He also complains about the scar on his face and as he's about to pick up a spoon on the table, he notices a weird vibration and looks confused.
Leonard tells Victor to consider resting, but Victor says he cannot do that because he still has to propose to Sue. But at least he's not afraid to fight for what he wants. Interestingly, Ben has set up Reed and Sue to have dinner with him. He eventually feels strange and decides to head to his room so he can leave Reed and Sue alone.
Reed then says he's really happy for Sue and Victor, but she seems pissed that he's choosing to move on even though he still likes her. As she lashes out at him for being obsessed with his work, she turns invisible and Reed looks confused when Sue notices that she's invisible. She looks shocked. And accidentally knocks down a wine bottle, which Reed grabs with his hand, which can now stretch like rubber.
As Sue and Reed wonder what's happening, Johnny walks in and explains what happened to him. Since Ben might also be experiencing strange symptoms, they decide to head to his room. Elsewhere, the scar on Victor's face begins to grow. As he also develops a headache, he tries to grab a metal object for balance, but the lights in the building start flickering.
Meanwhile, Ben turns into a rocky creature and leaves the building before anyone can see him because he feels embarrassed. When Reed and the others get to Ben's room, they don't find him there. Victor also meets them in the room and asks what's happening. Reed then mentions that it seems the cosmic storm fundamentally altered his and his team's DNA.
Sue says they're all experiencing different symptoms, but Victor doesn't talk about how he has been feeling. As he walks away, Reed tells the others that they need to find Ben. Here's where the big guy's going. Elsewhere, Ben visits his fianceé, Debbie, and calls her to come outside.
As Debbie leaves the house, Ben shows her his new look and tells her not to be scared. However, Debbie freaks out and tells Ben to stay away from her. This makes him sad and he heads to the Brooklyn Bridge to sit by the edge. After a while, a man walks toward the edge and tries to jump, but Ben stops him.
As the man sees Ben, he looks scared and falls back on the road. Almost immediately, Ben sees a truck heading toward the man and stops it. This causes a traffic pile up and the gas cylinders on a nearby truck also fall off. Everyone looks shocked to see Ben and Reed and the others soon get to the bridge.
Just then, one of the gas cylinders at the scene explodes and Johnny uses his powers to save a girl who is standing nearby while Sue contains the fire with a force field. The explosion also affects an incoming fire truck which almost falls off the bridge. Ben manages to hold it back and Reed uses his powers to save some of the firefighters. Following this, the crowd applauds Reed and his team.
Debbie is also at the scene and as she sees Ben again, she looks disappointed and drops her engagement ring on the bridge. Ben looks sad when he sees this and Reed also feels sorry for his friend. Shortly after, Reed, Ben, Sue, and Johnny are named the Fantastic Four, and a cop informs them that they need to speak to the media. Reed and Sue don't think it's a good idea, but Johnny says they need to embrace their powers.
That's great brainstorm. He also heads out to meet the media, and Reed and the others are forced to follow him. Reed then explains what happened to him and his crew on the space mission. Victor watches this on the news while in a meeting with his company's stockholders, who don't seem impressed.
Ned then announces that they're all pulling out, and Victor doesn't look happy. Meanwhile, Reed takes Sue, Johnny, and Ben to his lab to begin working on a machine to reverse what happened to them. Johnny doesn't like this, but Reed says it's what they have to do. The next day, Victor visits Sue at the lab and tells her to come with him so that his doctors can help her.
Sue says she prefers to stay with the others, and Victor decides to leave. On his way out, Reed stops him and apologizes for the failed mission. As Victor seems pissed and laments that his company's stock is down, the lights in the lab start flickering. Reed looks surprised, but Victor just heads out.
The next day, Reed starts conducting tests to fully understand his and his crew's powers. While working with Sue, she accidentally creates a force field and hits him with it. She immediately apologizes and says she hopes Reed doesn't think she did it intentionally. Reed says he has no reason to think that.
And Sue talks about how they broke up. She asks why Reed couldn't just let her move in with him, and he says there were many variables to consider. Sue says it's just an excuse, and she implies that Reed doesn't feel anything for her. Elsewhere, Victor visits his doctor for a checkup.
The doctor conducts a few tests and tells Victor that a very strong metallic alloy is forming on his skin. He says he'll have to notify the CDC because if the condition is contagious, it could become a serious problem. Victor tells the doctor that he wants it to be a secret, but the man insists that reporting to the CDC is the right thing to do. Victor doesn't like this and he grabs the man with one arm and kills him.
Elsewhere, Reed continues working on a machine that can reverse the damage done by the cosmic storm. Shortly after, the Fantastic 4 realize that they can no longer go out in public without attracting attention. Reed and Sue suggest that they all stay in the lab until the machine works. But Johnny doesn't like this.
After he gets tired of staying indoors for a few days, he watches a motocross competition on TV and decides to go to the venue. He leaves the lab without anyone noticing. And when he arrives at the competition venue, he shows his powers while riding a bike. After his performance, he appears on TV and talks about the other members of the Fantastic 4.
He says they all have nicknames and that he's the Human Torch, while Sue is the invisible woman. Reed is Mr. Fantastic and Ben is the thing as he jokes about Ben's name. Ben seems pissed and leaves the lab to find Johnny. When he does, he destroys Johnny's car and this causes a fight between him and Johnny.
Sue eventually separates them. And as Ben angrily leaves the scene, he says he's tired of the way people look at him. No, it's not. He also tells Sue that he'd give anything to become invisible instead of a weird rocky creature. Elsewhere, Victor discovers the extent of his powers when he puts his metallic hand near an electrical socket.
As he realizes that he can control and produce electricity, he goes after Ned and kills him. After this, he starts thinking about taking down the Fantastic 4 so he can be the only one with powers. Since it won't be easy, he decides to take Ben out first because he's the strongest member of the Fantastic 4. Back at the lab, Reed dozes off while working, and when Sue sees this, she suggests taking a break.
Following this, they head out together to watch a movie. After a while, they talk about their breakup again and admit that they still want each other back. Elsewhere, Ben goes to a bar to have a drink. As he tries to sit, he accidentally breaks the chair, and the people in the bar silently make fun of him.
The bartender eventually defends Ben, and a blind customer named Alicia offers to pay for Ben's drink. All right. Ben thanks her for this. And as he starts complaining about his looks, Alicia says she's sure it's not too bad. Ben then allows her to touch his rocky body. And even though Alicia initially seems shocked, she tells him that being different isn't a bad thing.
Ben seems pleased and Alicia introduces herself to him before she leaves the bar. Shortly after, Victor meets Ben at the bar and implies that Reed isn't doing enough to help Ben. He adds that the others don't know how Ben feels because they can still go outside as normal people. Shortly after, Ben returns to the lab and sees Reed and Sue returning from their date.
He seems pissed and says that Reed isn't focused on helping him. This soon results in a fight and Ben says he's done watching Reed's back. After he leaves, Reed looks sad and decides to try the machine on himself, even though it doesn't seem ready. Unfortunately, the machine only makes Reed's condition worse.
And as Sue sees this, she takes him to a hospital. Much later, Victor brings Ben back to the lab and says he can make the machine work by creating enough power to boost the artificial cosmic storm Reed has been working on. generate enough power for the machine to reach critical mass. Ben then enters the machine and Victor uses his powers to control the storm. This causes the lights in the city to blink for a while and Sue, Reed, and Johnny realize that something is wrong.
Meanwhile, Ben comes out of the machine as his old self and looks really happy. Victor then shows up and says that everyone thought he was safe behind the shields. Ben looks shocked to see Victor's disfigured face and he realizes that Victor was also affected. Ben says the machine can reverse it, but Victor says it has already worked for him because he has been exposed to the cosmic storm again.
Ben cannot believe this, but Victor just knocks him out. Almost immediately, Reed arrives at the lab and tells Victor that he's endangering his life by exposing himself to the cosmic storm. Victor doesn't care about this and he throws Reed out of the building and eventually takes him to his office. There, Victor puts on a mask to cover his scars and become a villain named Dr. to doom.
