Cops Chase Her After Her Powers Are Exposed.
She thought her powers were a secret, but once the truth got out, everything changed. Now the cops are chasing her, and she’s running not just for freedom, but for her life.
‘SPOILER ALERT’
In a part of America where it hasn’t rained for years, a lady named Ruth runs out of an abandoned building when she hears some sirens in the neighborhood. She then enters a car and leaves the area. As a police car passes beside her car, Ruth quickly hides her gun in her bag and seems quite nervous as she continues driving.
Shortly after, Ruth heads to a motel to get a room to stay for the night. The receptionist gives her some water as well as the key to the room she’ll be staying in. Ruth then asks for the name of the town she’s currently in, and the receptionist says it’s View Park.
Suddenly, the receptionist hears a sound coming from her office, and she tells Ruth to excuse her for a minute. Almost immediately, the receptionist returns with her baby, and as Ruth sees her, she looks nervous. After Ruth pays for the room and the water, she quickly leaves the reception.
When she gets to her room, she cuts the ropes tied to her wrists and washes the blood off them. Shortly after, she checks her map and sees that she’s still not close to her destination, which is a town called Garrison. As she gets nervous again, she suddenly places all the appliances in the room on the floor.
After this, she calls the receptionist and tells her to hide under the desk with her daughter. The receptionist doesn’t understand this, but Ruth also tells her to stay away from the windows and cover her daughter’s head. Almost immediately, Ruth hangs on to the bed and starts vibrating strangely.
Surprisingly, this causes a tremor that shakes the entire building and the nearby areas. After a while, some cops and emergency workers arrive at the motel to see what happened. With the receptionist’s help, they’re able to find the room where someone made a call to warn the receptionist about what was about to happen.
Interestingly, they don’t see anyone there, and it turns out that Ruth has already escaped. After she steals a car in the neighborhood, she leaves the town without anyone seeing her. A while later, she stops at a restaurant to eat, but she keeps watching her back every time someone comes in. A man named Bill notices this and asks if she’s expecting someone, but Ruth ignores him. He then complains about the coffee, but still tells the waitress to give some to Ruth because she doesn’t have a bottle of water with her.
Ruth says he doesn’t have to buy it for her, but Bill tells her not to worry about it. Ruth thanks him for this, and she drinks her coffee. Bill then asks where she’s headed, and Ruth says she’s just going around. Bill asks what she means, and Ruth mentions that she’s just figuring some things out. Bill says he remembers when he used to be like that, but that his life is now different because he’s married with two kids.
Ruth doesn’t respond to this, and Bill says he’s leaving. As he wishes her good luck on her journey and tells her his name, Ruth thanks him again for the cup of coffee. Shortly after, Ruth heads out to continue her journey, but she sees a cop standing in front of the car she stole in View Park.
She looks really scared that she might be caught, but just as the cop looks at her, Bill calls her and pretends to be her husband. With this, Ruth manages to avoid getting arrested, and she enters Bill’s car. On the way, he asks if she committed a crime, but Ruth doesn’t seem interested in sharing what happened.
She says he can drop her off on the road, but Bill mentions that he just wants to help her. Ruth then tells him to drop her off at the next town. Bill asks if that’s all she wants, and Ruth says it is. Shortly after, he asks if she heard that there was an earthquake in View Park the previous night. He says it’s quite strange for something like that to happen in that part of the country.
Ruth remains silent, but Bill continues talking about how he stopped at the motel earlier and met a girl who told him that a strange woman called her mom and told them to seek cover just before the earthquake started. Ruth starts to suspect that there’s something off about Bill, and almost immediately, he confesses that he was the one who called the cop at the restaurant. As he calls her name, Ruth looks scared, but Bill quickly stops the car and locks the doors.
Ruth realizes that she can’t escape, but Bill tells her not to be scared because he’s just a scientist. He adds that he works for the government, and they’ve been looking for Ruth for a very long time. He also mentions that someone named Joe told him what she can do, and he wants to see it too.
As he says that he’s sure she doesn’t want to hurt people, he brings out a syringe from his pocket. Ruth immediately reaches for her bag and pulls out her gun. Before she can shoot him, Bill pushes the gun away but still gets hurt.
She eventually breaks the window and tries to escape through it, but Bill stops her. As she tries to shoot him, she realizes that she has run out of bullets. Bill nearly takes advantage of this to grab her, but Ruth manages to escape. She then heads to a nearby store to buy some water. After this, she goes to the restroom and cleans up her body.
When she’s through, she heads to a bar and asks the bartender if she serves food there. The bartender says she does, and she asks what Ruth wants. Ruth says she doesn’t have any money, but that she wouldn’t mind washing some dishes and helping out at the bar. The bartender doesn’t initially seem interested in this, but she eventually gives Ruth some food. After this, Ruth helps the bartender clean up the bar when all the customers are gone.
As she then listens to some music, the bartender gives her a bag containing a sandwich, a bottle of water, and some washed clothes. Ruth thanks her for this and asks if there’s a place she can stay for the night. The bartender says that the rooms aren’t in good condition, but that Ruth might find one that is manageable.
Just then, Ruth goes to one of the rooms, and as she sits down, she thinks about everything that has happened. Elsewhere, Bill enters the store where Ruth came to buy water a while ago, and he asks the cashier for the name of the town. The cashier says they’re in Garrison, and as he sees Bill bleeding, he asks if he’s alright.
Bill initially says he’s alright, but he eventually asks the cashier if he has seen a strange woman. Meanwhile, a Sheriff named Ellis sees Bill’s car on the road and stops just behind it. As he checks inside and sees the broken window, he looks shocked and calls his men to come and check out the crime scene.
A while later, a girl named Lila tells her grandmother, Bo, about a record player she just fixed. Bo seems impressed by this, and Lila tells her how she did it. After this, Lila asks if she can start repairing the abandoned truck outside the house. Bo says they’ll talk about it later, and Lila seems pleased with this.
After a while, Bo heads outside and lights a cigarette. As she then stares at it, she suddenly disintegrates it by using her mind. Almost immediately, Ruth shows up outside the house and startles Bo while she’s still using her powers. Bo looks shocked to see her, but she still greets Ruth, who happens to be her daughter. Shortly after, Ruth says she knows that Bo is still angry that she ran away from home.
Bo sounds pissed and mentions that Ruth told her to pretend as if she was dead. Ruth says she’s sorry for that, and she says that she’s now sober. She adds that she knew being sober would make the seizures come back, but she didn’t know how bad it could get.
As she says that she recently had two seizures in one day, Bo looks scared and asks if anyone knows about her. Ruth pretends not to understand the question, but Bo says that someone must’ve seen her. Ruth says she doesn’t know if anyone is aware of her seizures, but Bo refuses to believe this.
She then mentions that she doesn’t want Ruth to put Lila in danger. Ruth asks how Lila is, and Bo says she’s healthy and smart. After Bo mentions that Lila is nothing like Ruth, she asks what her daughter wants from her. Ruth says she needs her mom’s help, and Bo agrees to let her stay in a nearby shed.
After giving her some food, Bo asks if she needs anything to tie herself. Ruth says she’s fine, and Bo mentions that the hardest part of watching her daughter’s seizures in the past was having to tie her up. As she’s about to leave the shed, Ruth asks if Lila has powers.
Bo says that Lila’s powers are more like hers, and that it’s not really something serious. Ruth then asks if there are other houses in the area, but Bo says that everyone has moved out. After this, she asks if Lila will feel the tremor, but Ruth says it’s only a little.
Bo doesn’t believe this, but Ruth says she doesn’t want to argue with her mom. After this, Bo leaves the shed and heads into the house. A few hours later, Ruth experiences her seizures again, and this causes a tremor that shakes the house. Lila looks scared and doesn’t know what’s happening, but Bo quickly holds her until the tremor stops. Shortly after, Bo leaves the house to check up on Ruth, and Lila waits outside the shed.
Almost immediately, Bo leaves the shed with Ruth and tells Lila to meet her mom. Lila looks shocked by this, and she just keeps staring at Ruth. The next morning, Ruth sees Lila working on her old truck outside the house. She seems surprised by this, but Bo eventually calls Lila inside for breakfast. After this, Ruth stands by the door and asks Bo if she can come in.
Bo doesn’t say anything, and as Ruth walks in, she sits with them at the dining table. As they start eating, Ruth can’t take her eyes off Lila, and she eventually mentions that her daughter is using her old bowl. She adds that she broke it and tried to use her abilities to fix it, but she realized that her abilities can’t fix things.
Lila also mentions that Bo already taught her that they can’t fix things with their abilities. Ruth says she eventually used some glue to stick the broken plate together, and Lila asks if she can also disintegrate things. Ruth says she can’t do it anymore because she lost her powers.
Lila asks what happened, and Ruth realizes that Bo hasn’t told her about her seizures. As Lila asks why they’re looking at each other strangely, Bo mentions that Ruth is different. Lila asks how, and Bo says that whenever Ruth used her abilities, strange things happened, and she couldn’t understand why.
Ruth adds that when her seizures started, she couldn’t use her powers anymore. Lila then asks if she tried anything else, and Ruth says she left home. Lila finds this surprising, but Ruth mentions that she did things she shouldn’t have done and spent time with people she shouldn’t have been with. Lila asks what she means, and Ruth says she was sick. She says she can’t really explain her sickness, but that when she was sick, the seizures stopped.
Lila asks if her abilities came back, but Ruth says they didn’t. Lila doesn’t seem to understand how she ended up with Bo, but Ruth says she came back home to drop her off with her mom. She says she was so messed up at that point, and she couldn’t stay. Lila asks why it’s now okay for her to stay, but Ruth doesn’t know what to say. Bo then mentions that Ruth needs their help.
Ruth adds that if Bo can help her regain her abilities, the seizures might go away. Bo then tells Lila to show Ruth what she can do. Lila initially seems hesitant, but Bo tells her to do it. After this, Lila lifts a bowl with her mind and disintegrates it before putting it back together. Interestingly, she suddenly starts seeing something that Ruth and Bo can’t see.
Ruth then asks Bo if Lila can see the colors, and she says she can. Ruth seems amazed by this, and she asks Lila what they look like. Lila asks if she really doesn’t know what the colors look like, and Ruth mentions that she has never seen them before. Following this, Lila explains that the moving colors appear just after she puts back the thing she took apart. She adds that it’s like an after-effect which is only visible to her.
Ruth asks how it feels, and Lila says it’s really warm. She also mentions that Bo once told her that the colors will last longer if she disintegrates something big. Elsewhere, Bill recovers Ruth’s bag from the motel but doesn’t find anything useful inside it. Shortly after, he meets with an associate, and they both head to the Sheriff’s office. Much later, when Ellis arrives at work, he asks his deputies if the analysis of the evidence they took from the abandoned car has arrived.
One of his deputies mentions that some other guys have already come in to take the result. She adds that the men claimed they were taking over the investigation. Ellis says he didn’t hear about this, and he decides to call the lab.
As he does this, he confirms what he was told and wonders why they didn’t let him see the result before handing it over to someone else. Ellis doesn’t seem happy about the situation, so he leaves the office and returns to the place where the abandoned car was found. After looking around for a while, he decides to find out what really happened.
Elsewhere, Bo tries to get Ruth to disintegrate a bucket, but she’s unable to do this. Lila sees her mom struggling to regain her abilities, and she feels sorry for her. Shortly after, Bo shows Ruth a book that was written by the women in her family. Interestingly, the women also had the same abilities but chose to stay hidden. As Ruth reads the book, she realizes that the women in Bo’s family have lived in their current house for generations.
Ruth asks why her mom never told her, and Bo says that her daughter was never big on history. Shortly after, Lila enters the room and tells them that she has an idea. Bo asks what it is, and Lila mentions that instead of getting her mom to disintegrate the bucket, Ruth can just think about when she took the bowl apart earlier.
She adds that it might be the best way for her mom to remember how to use her abilities. Bo and Ruth agree to try this, and they head outside immediately. Just as Lila tries to disintegrate the bowl again while Ruth is holding her hand, one of the windows in the house suddenly breaks.
They all look shocked by this, and they don’t understand how it could’ve happened. While Ruth is sweeping the broken glass, Lila asks if she broke the window. Ruth says she doesn’t think so because she has been too disconnected to be able to do anything. Lila then asks if Ruth thinks there are others like them. Ruth says she believes they’re the only ones with powers, but Lila mentions that it’s impossible to know, because they’ve always stayed hidden.
Ruth then asks Lila if Bo has told her about someone named Simona. Lila says she hasn’t, and Ruth mentions that Bo actually made up a story about Simona. She says that Bo used to say that Simona was just like them, but she could do things they couldn’t do, like taking apart the sky.
She adds that she thinks Bo made up the story so she could feel normal with her powers. After this, Lila says she’ll get a piece of cardboard to cover the window, but Ruth suggests trying to put the broken glass back together. Lila says it won’t work because their powers can’t fix things, but Ruth insists that she has to try.
Just then, Lila tries to use her powers to put the broken glass back together, but it doesn’t work. She then walks out of the room after telling Ruth that she knew it wouldn’t work. Shortly after, Lila begs Bo to take her to the supermarket so they can get some things.
Even though Bo is initially hesitant, she agrees to do this, and they leave for the supermarket while Ruth stays back. Elsewhere, Ellis gets to the store where Ruth and Bill came after they left the road. As the cashier sees Ellis, he asks if he’s in trouble, but the Sheriff asks why he would think that.
The cashier then mentions that a man and a woman came to the store a while ago, and Ellis asks him some questions. After this, Ellis heads to the bar where Ruth worked to get some food. He then tells the bartender that he’d like to ask her a few questions. Much later, someone calls Bo’s landline, but Ruth doesn’t answer it. The answering machine eventually comes on, but Ruth doesn’t hear anything, and she finds this surprising.
At the supermarket, Bo tells Lila to go and get the things they need. As Lila walks around the store, she bumps into Bill and his associate, and they look at her strangely. Lila seems scared but eventually ignores them before going to meet her grandmother. Shortly after, while Ruth tries to regain her abilities by remembering how Lila took apart the bowl, a strange cloud appears behind her, but she doesn’t see it. Almost immediately, Bo and Lila arrive home, and as Ruth gets distracted, the cloud disappears.
After they all enter the house, Lila runs to her room and pours some disintegrated particles on the floor. She then uses her powers to put them back together to form tools. Interestingly, it turns out that Lila actually took them from the store without Bo’s consent because she wants to use them to fix the truck.
Later that night, Ruth tells Bo that the answering machine came on when she was away, but no one left a message. Bo finds this surprising, and she heads to her room to check the answering machine. It then turns out that the silence is a secret message which she understands.
Meanwhile, Ruth spends some time with her daughter, and Lila mentions that she’s actually fixing the truck because she wants to run away with it. She says that she wants to see what’s out there in the world because there are times she feels that her powers could mean something. Ruth says they aren’t superheroes, and she also tells Lila not to be in such a hurry to leave.
Lila doesn’t seem to get this, and she says that it’s what her mom did. Ruth looks sad to hear this, but she mentions that she doesn’t want Lila to make the same mistake. Elsewhere, Bo meets with Ellis in a secret place, and it turns out that he was the one who sent the message.
He then asks if Ruth is back, and Bo confirms this. Ellis seems worried about this, and he asks if Ruth told Bo about an abandoned car on the road. Bo says she didn’t, and she realizes that her daughter has been hiding something from her. When she returns home, she tells Ruth to pack her things because she can’t afford to let Lila be in danger. Ruth says she doesn’t want to leave, and she mentions that she only tried to defend herself when Bill attacked her.
Lila hears them arguing, and as she enters the shed, she asks if Ruth is leaving. Ruth says she’s not, and Bo leaves the shed without saying anything. The next morning, Bill meets with his supervisor, who tells him that their bosses are running out of patience regarding Ruth’s case.
Bill says he needs more time, and that he’s sure Ruth came to Garrison to meet her family. He adds that his supervisor has to make his bosses understand that he’s close to achieving his goal. He says that his research is important because they’ve all seen that Ruth can cause tectonic plates to shift.
He also mentions that Ruth’s abilities mean she can affect the energy of the Earth. Shortly after, while Ruth and her mom are watching Lila fix the truck, Bo talks about how she met Ruth’s father the first time she left the house when she was younger. Almost immediately, Lila fixes the truck, and Ruth heads outside with Bo to congratulate her.
After Ruth says that Lila can have the truck, Bo sees the new tools on the ground and asks where her granddaughter got them. Lila says she saw them in the shed, but Bo realizes that she’s lying. As she also figures out that Lila stole the tools with her powers, she collects the key to the truck and says that they aren’t supposed to use their abilities for such things.
Lila angrily asks what they can use it for, but before Bo responds, Ellis drives toward the house. Bo and Ruth look shocked to see him, and Ellis says he’s there to warn them because some people are after Ruth. He adds that he just learned that they want to conduct some tests on her. Interestingly, Ruth knows about this, but she says that she didn’t tell Bo because she wouldn’t have allowed her to stay.
Lila then asks why Ellis is helping them, and Ruth says he’s her dad. Lila seems surprised by this, but Ellis properly introduces himself to her. Since Lila could be in danger again, Bo tells Ruth to leave with the truck, and she agrees to do this. Lila says she wants to come with Ruth, but her mom mentions that it’s best if she stays back. She adds that when she said she was sick earlier, she actually meant she was a drug addict.
Lila still insists on following her, but Ruth shouts at her and tells her that there’s nothing out there in the world to see except terrible people. Ruth leaves after this, and Lila angrily heads into the house. Shortly after, the truck runs out of gas, and Ruth walks to a nearby petrol station.
When she gets there, the ground suddenly starts vibrating as she thinks about Lila. Ruth looks scared and immediately runs to a field to lie down there and control herself. Just then, she remembers what happened after she gave birth to Lila. On that day, Ruth placed Lila beside her on the bed and fell asleep. Unfortunately, she experienced a seizure that broke a pipe and filled the room with water.
When she woke up, she saw that Lila was no longer on the bed, and she started looking for her daughter in the water. Almost immediately, Ruth found her and looked relieved to see that Lila was still alive. After Ruth is done thinking about this, the vibration stops, and she suddenly sees the colors.
Ruth looks shocked by this, but as it implies that she has regained her abilities, she runs to the truck and drives it back home. When she gets to the house, she doesn’t see anyone there, but she notices that the place looks scattered. She then heads to Ellis’ house, and he looks shocked to see her. As she asks for Lila, Ellis mentions that she’s already at the station with Bill and his men. Ellis also says that Bill came to the house after Ruth left, and Lila used her abilities because she thought it would stop the scientist from going after her mom.
Ruth looks sad as she hears this, but Ellis says that they need to be patient because Bo will soon return from the station. As they wait for Bo to arrive, Ellis tells Ruth about how he became a Sheriff because he thought it was the only way he could protect his family. Suddenly, Bo enters the house and looks shocked to see Ruth.
As Bo asks why Ruth hasn’t left, she says that she saw the colors. Bo is shocked by this, but Ruth says that she believes she can take apart the sky. As she adds that she’s going to save Lila, Bo looks quite worried, but Ruth tells her that she’s now in control of her seizures.
After she leaves the house, Ellis tells Bo that they have to follow her. He says that even though Bo thinks they can’t take down Bill and his men, they just have to try. Bo then says that she has never been afraid of the men, and that she’s actually scared she might be able to take them down. Ellis looks surprised by this, and they leave the house together. When Ruth gets close to the station, she gets out of the truck and uses her powers to take apart the sky.
Ellis and Bo arrive right on time and watch Ruth using her powers to make rain fall in the town for the first time in many years. Everyone in the town looks shocked as they come out of their houses, and Bill also sees Ruth when he leaves the station. As he gets his men to point a gun at Ruth, Bo stands up to them and uses her powers to disintegrate their guns.
The men look shocked, but Bo tells them to leave Ruth and take her instead. Ellis looks confused, but Bo says it’s what she has to do because they’ll keep coming after her and the kids. She adds that she’s tired of hiding. Following this, she tells Bill to let Ruth and Lila leave while she stays behind and tells him about her gift, which was passed down to her by her mother and the other women in her family.
Almost immediately, Lila uses her powers to disintegrate her cell door, and as she heads out, she hears her grandmother telling Bill and his men that she knows how scared they are that the world is dying. She says that they don’t know how to save it, but she does. She adds that a new world is coming, and they’ve only just seen the beginning.
Following this, Lila runs to meet Bo and immediately hugs her. Bo then gives Lila a note and tells her to give it to her mom. Lila asks if her mom came back, and Bo says that Ruth came for her. Lila looks happy about this, but she asks if Bo isn’t coming with them. Bo says she isn’t, but that Lila doesn’t have to worry because Bill and his men can’t hurt her.
After this, Lila runs toward Ruth and hugs her. As they leave Garrison, Ellis looks at Bo and says that he has accepted what she wants to do because he understands her. Bo then walks into the station and fixes the door just as Bill and his men get to the entrance.
Much later, Lila gives Ruth the note Bo gave to her. As Ruth reads it, she realizes that Simona is real, and she’s living in Rome. In the note, Bo also tells Ruth that there are others like them, and that she has to find them. Ruth smiles as she reads this, and she continues her journey with Lila.
After becoming a target for an experiment because of her powers, Ruth heads back to her mom’s house for help. Even though Ruth initially struggled with her seizures, she eventually learned to control them, and this helped her regain her abilities. Since Ruth is still a target for the scientists, Bo decides to take her daughter’s place so that she can leave the town with Lila. Despite their strained past as well as Ruth’s decision to run away from home, Bo didn’t turn her back on her daughter when she needed her the most. In this story, we learn that even though the past might be painful, love can still lead us to protect the people we care about.
