A Great Place to Call Home (2023) Full Recap
In a town called Boonton in Pennsylvania, a man named Milton leaves his house and heads to the regular town hall meeting. After Milton arrives at the meeting, he greets a woman named Sandy, who seems quite friendly. Milton also tries to greet another lady named Joyce, but as he looks at her, she doesn't seem interested in talking to him. Shortly after, the meeting begins, and the Mayor starts talking about the recent developments in the town.
When he's through with this, he tells the residents to give their comments, but that the town council members aren't obliged to give them a response. Milton then steps forward and appears to have written his comment in his note. He then makes some suggestions about the town’s slogan and a crosswalk. The council doesn't respond to him, and after the meeting ends, Milton walks back home.
The next day, Milton wakes up early to water the flowers in his backyard. Shortly after, his daughter, Denise, visits him and helps him sort out some of his bills. When she’s through, she asks if he has heard from her brother, Tim, but Milton says he hasn't. He adds that it costs a lot to make long-distance calls, so he understands why Tim hasn't called him yet.
Denise doesn't want to bother him about the topic, and she says that she wants to go to the restroom before she leaves. While she's there, she sees a can of green beans in the cabinet, and she looks confused. As she then asks Milton about it, he says that he didn't know it was there, but Denise asks if he has any idea why he put it there. Milton says he might've just gotten confused, or maybe the kitchen cabinets were full.
Denise says there's still a lot of space there, but Milton mentions that he might've just been distracted. Denise then wonders if her dad is already forgetting things due to old age, but she just asks if he's feeling okay. Milton says he's okay, but Denise still asks if he wants to go for a checkup. Milton doesn't seem interested in this, and he tells Denise that she doesn't need a checkup.
Denise looks worried about him, but she mentions that she has to leave because she's late for work. Later that night, while he's sleeping, he suddenly hears a strange sound in his backyard, and this wakes him up. As he goes outside to check what happened, he sees an alien spaceship in his backyard. Milton looks shocked by this, and as he moves closer, he seems quite disappointed that the alien spaceship destroyed his flowers.
After this, he goes inside and calls 911 to report what happened. Interestingly, the operator thinks he's trying to prank her, and she ignores his report. Milton doesn't get this, but he decides to call Denise. Her line goes straight to voicemail, and Milton is unable to record a message because her mailbox is full.
Milton then stares at the spaceship and looks scared, but since there's nothing else he can do, he just goes back to bed. A few days later, Milton attends the town hall meeting and waits in line to give his comments. Joyce happens to be first in line, and she seems pissed that the Council hasn't done anything about something she requested for a while ago. Sandy goes up next, and she also makes her suggestion, but the council just remains silent.
When it's Milton's turn, he reads the same note as the last meeting, but he still doesn't get a response. After the meeting ends, Milton heads home and seems scared that the alien spaceship is still in his house. That night, while he's sleeping, he hears a strange sound outside his house again, and he looks confused. As he then goes to the backyard, he sees an alien lying on the ground after bumping into some chairs.
The alien seems to have passed out, but Milton looks scared and heads back inside. He then calls Denise again, but her line goes straight to voicemail. Despite knowing that her voicemail box is full, he still tries to leave a message to tell her about the spaceship and the alien. He says he's really scared, and that he doesn't know what to do.
He then tells her to call him as soon as she can. During the next town hall meeting, Sandy sees Milton and asks how he’s doing. Instead of saying whether he's fine or not, he tells Sandy that he has a real situation on his hands at home. Sandy doesn't get this, but as the meeting is called to order, she goes up to inform the council about a project she's launching to foster elderly-youth connections.
She says she'll be placing some posters around the town for any young person who wants to learn from her. The council doesn't comment on this as usual, and Milton goes up next. He then reads his usual note before adding that a UFO crashed in his backyard. Everyone looks shocked, and the Mayor asks if he really means what he's saying.
Milton repeats it again, but the Mayor and other council members just stare at him strangely because they don't believe him. After the meeting, Milton leaves the hall, but Joyce runs to meet him. She then mentions that he can't talk like that again because it will make the council take the rest of them less seriously. Milton says he's serious about the spaceship, but Joyce still doesn't believe him, so she tells him not to say things like that again.
As Milton then asks if he's not supposed to tell anyone that he saw a UFO in his backyard, Joyce just walks away angrily. After this, Sandy walks up to Milton and asks if he wants a ride home. Milton says he can walk, but Sandy insists that she can just give him a lift. Milton then decides to follow her, and as he goes toward Sandy's car, Joyce stares at them.
Just as they get to Milton's house, Sandy asks if Milton is feeling well, and he says that, aside from the spaceship situation, he's fine. Sandy doesn't think he's fine, and she tells him to call her if there's anything she can help him with. Milton says he'll do that, and he eventually leaves the car. When he gets inside the house, he goes to the backyard and sees that the alien is still lying on the floor.
Surprisingly, the alien now appears to be alive, and he lifts his head to look at Milton before passing out again. Milton feels sorry for him and goes inside to get a blanket and a glass of water. After Milton covers the alien with a blanket, he places the glass of water on the floor and heads back inside. The next morning, Milton wakes up and begins his usual morning routine.
As he then goes to the backyard, he sees that the alien is no longer lying on the ground. Since he still looks cold, Milton tells him to come inside because it's warmer there. The alien initially looks reluctant to move, but as Milton keeps telling him to come inside, he eventually stands up and walks in. He then sits right beside the couch in the living room, but he still doesn't say a word.
As Milton looks at the alien, he says that he doesn't really know what to do because something like that has never happened to him before. After a while, Milton puts different food options on a tray because he doesn't know which one the alien might like. Interestingly, the alien only eats the sliced apples on the tray, and Milton looks happy about this, but he mentions that he doesn't have any more. Almost immediately, he leaves the house and goes to the supermarket to buy more apples.
When he gets to the counter, the cashier mentions that Milton is buying a lot of apples, and he says that it's for the alien in his house. The cashier asks if he's talking about an illegal alien, but Milton mentions that it's an alien from outer space. He adds that a spaceship crashed in his backyard a couple of nights ago, and that an alien came crawling out of it. As he mentions that the only thing the alien has eaten so far is apples, the cashier looks at Milton and thinks he's delusional.
After Milton pays for the apples, he heads home and puts on the TV while he reads a book. On the news channel, a reporter mentions that the government is looking for the pieces of a weather satellite that is believed to have disintegrated over Western Pennsylvania. He also says that the government doesn't want anyone who comes across the parts of the fallen device to touch it. The alien in Milton's house happens to be standing just by the door, and as Milton sees him, he gets startled.
He eventually calms down and tells the alien that he's used to living alone, and he forgot that he had a visitor. He then suggests showing the alien around the house, and he takes him to the bathroom first. He then shows the alien the guest bedroom and other parts of the house. After this, he talks about the different TV channels and the one he likes best.
He also tells the alien that one of the TV's remotes is to change the volume, and that if he changes something else, he would have to call Denise, who sometimes gets irritated with him. Milton then shows the alien his family photo and says that his wife passed away a while ago. He adds that Denise still lives around the town, but his son, Tim, stays in California. He says that Tim went there for work a long time ago, and he hasn't heard from him much.
He says it's not really a problem because he knows that young people are always busy. Elsewhere, Denise goes to the supermarket to buy some things, and the cashier tells her that her dad came around earlier. He adds that Milton bought apples, which he said were for the alien living in his house. Denise looks shocked by this, and she asks if Milton was joking, but the cashier says it didn't seem like that.
Almost immediately, Denise leaves the supermarket and heads to Milton's house. The alien happens to be in the living room when she rings the doorbell, but Milton goes to check who it is. Just as he opens the door, Denise stands outside and mentions that she's worried because her dad is 78 years old, and he hasn't seen a doctor in three years. She then tells him to let her schedule a checkup for him, but Milton says he's fine, and that he doesn't need a doctor.
Denise says they can confirm that at the hospital, and that she won't take no for an answer. Milton then agrees to let her schedule the checkup, and she thanks him for listening to her. After this, he asks if she got his message, but she tells him that she didn't get it because her mailbox is full. Almost immediately, his phone rings, and Denise tells him to answer it while she heads back to work.
Before Milton can say anything about the alien, she walks away, and he goes back into the house to answer the phone. It then turns out to be Sandy, who asks if Milton has a printer. As he says that he does, Sandy asks if she can come over to print some posters for her project. Milton says it's fine, and after a while, Sandy shows up at his house.
Just as he invites her inside, Sandy sees the alien and looks terrified. Milton then asks if she remembers the spaceship he talked about during the meeting. Sandy still looks confused because she didn't think he was being serious, but Milton says that the alien came out of the spaceship. He then introduces the alien to Sandy, but as she keeps staring at him, she asks Milton what he is.
Milton says he's an alien from space, and Sandy asks how long he has been there. Milton says it has only been a couple of days, but Sandy cannot believe that he really just let an alien come into his house and sit down on his couch. Milton then says that the alien is actually very friendly and undemanding. Sandy eventually feels overwhelmed and says that she has to sit down.
As she sits on the same couch as the alien, she still looks shocked and tells Milton that it's a really big deal to have an alien inside his house. She mentions that it has never happened before, and Milton agrees with her. As she then asks for the spaceship, Milton takes her to the backyard, and she looks really shocked. However, Milton seems more worried about when his flowers will grow again.
When they head back inside, Milton says that the alien wasn't really doing well when he first arrived, but he has been much better since he started eating apples. Sandy then asks if Milton really plans to keep him in the house, and he says he'll do that for as long as the alien wants. Sandy seems worried that it might not be safe, but Milton tells her that the alien looks harmless. She then tells him that if he wants to keep the alien, he needs to stop talking about it and allowing people to come over just like he did with her.
She adds that it has to be a secret because she has seen what people do to aliens in movies, and Milton agrees with her. Coincidentally, Joyce happens to be driving around the neighborhood, and she sees Sandy's car parked in front of Milton's house. She finds this surprising because she didn't think they were friends, but she eventually ignores them and continues driving away. Just before Sandy leaves, she reminds him not to tell anyone, and he says he won't.
Meanwhile, at the National Security Center, some agents happen to be working really hard to find the spaceship that landed in Pennsylvania. Back at Milton's house, the news comes on, and the reporter mentions that the government is now saying that it was a security satellite that crashed in Western Pennsylvania. Almost immediately, Milton comes over to meet the alien to tell him that he's going to like Sandy because she's friendly. Later that night, Milton falls asleep while watching TV, and the alien keeps staring at him.
The next morning, Milton wakes up and sees that the alien helped him lie down well on the couch. He also sees that the alien has left him a sketch of a cat on the table. As he then heads outside, Milton sees the alien already working on his spaceship. He says it's nice to see that because he knows it must be hard to be stuck on another planet.
The alien just keeps staring at him, and Milton thanks him for the sketch and says it's very beautiful. Later that day, Milton leaves the house for his scheduled appointment with a doctor, and Sandy comes over to stay with the alien. As the alien keeps staring at Sandy, she tells him about Milton's appointment and asks if he can understand her. The alien just stays silent, and Sandy mentions that since he won't talk, she’ll tell him something about herself.
She then tells him that she has a daughter who lives in the city. She also shows him some pictures of her daughter’s family, which includes her grandson. However, Sandy suddenly feels sad and says that despite being a kind mother, her daughter has neglected her and would rather hang out with her partner's mom. She also cries as she says that she hasn't seen her daughter and grandson in three years.
The alien still remains silent, and Sandy laughs while telling him that she's not usually that talkative. Elsewhere, a psychiatrist tests Milton's ability to remember things, but he fails badly. Denise also happens to be with him, and she tells the psychiatrist about what Milton told the cashier the other day. Since he already agreed not to tell anyone else about the alien, Milton says he was only joking.
The psychiatrist then says that at Milton's age, it's time for him to start considering options for assisted living. Milton says he doesn't want that, and he leaves the office angrily. Denise tries to stop him, but he accuses her of setting him up. Denise says she was only trying to help, but Milton tells her that he doesn't want her help.
When he gets home, he walks in angrily and heads to his room. Sandy looks shocked by this, and she asks if he's okay. Milton says he is, and Sandy mentions that she's already leaving. Much later, while the alien is working on his spaceship, Milton goes outside to meet him. He then tells the alien that Denise wants to send him to a care home.
He jokes that it's probably because he has called her many times to fix the TV. He then talks about Tim and says that his son doesn't like him. He says he doesn't blame Tim because he wasn't really a good father. He adds that he was really bad at it, and he just stopped caring about being a good father.
After he goes back inside, Milton calls Tim, but it just goes straight to voicemail. He then records a message, telling Tim that he's sorry for how things have always been between them. The next day, Sandy comes over to Milton's house and gives the alien a shirt to wear. She also suggests giving him a name, but Milton doesn't think it's necessary.
Sandy still names him Jules, and Milton doesn't seem to have a problem with this. Elsewhere, Joyce watches the news and hears a reporter talking about the crashed satellite. He also mentions that the government is now offering a huge reward for anyone who knows where it is. Joyce then remembers what Milton said the other day, and she wonders if he was really telling the truth.
Later that night, she goes to his house and sneaks around until she sees Jules sitting at the dining table. She looks shocked by this, but she eventually rings the doorbell. As Sandy goes to see who it is, she sees Joyce and quickly tells Milton to take Jules upstairs. After he does this, Sandy opens the door and tells Joyce that she and Milton were just having dinner.
Joyce then says that she has already seen the alien, and Sandy looks shocked. After Joyce enters the house, she keeps staring at Jules and seems curious about where he's from. Milton says she shouldn't have spied on them, but Joyce mentions that she just knew there was something weird about him and Sandy spending time together. As she keeps staring at Jules, Sandy tells Milton that they have to trust Joyce and hope that she won't tell anyone because there's nothing else they can do.
Milton doesn't seem happy about this, and he suggests killing her, but Joyce sounds offended by this. After Sandy calms them down, Jules gives Milton a sketch of more cats, and Joyce asks what it means. Milton says that Jules just likes giving him drawings, but Joyce thinks it might mean something. Milton then starts to think that Joyce is being weird, and Sandy begs her not to tell anyone because they don't know what could happen to Jules if the government finds him.
Joyce says she's not telling anyone, but that they have to stop hiding things from her. The next day, the agents at the National Security Center intercept a call from someone who complains about another person who keeps staring at a spaceship in his backyard. Following this, two agents are sent to the house, but they see that the spaceship the person was talking about isn't a real one. Elsewhere, Joyce comes over to see Jules, and she brings him a new shirt and some apples.
After this, they head inside, and she starts talking about her past and how things were for her when she was in the city. She also talks about how she used to be a singer, and she says that she can still sing. Meanwhile, Sandy gets a call from a man named Danny, who says he wants to sign up for the senior mentoring program. Sandy looks excited by this, and she invites him to her house.
When he arrives, Sandy talks to him for a while before he says that he wants to go to the bathroom. After she directs him to where it is, he doesn't return early enough, and Sandy looks worried. As she then goes to check up on him, she sees that he's trying to steal some jewelry from her room. Sandy looks shocked by this, but as she runs to call the police, he knocks her down and tries to strangle her.
Interestingly, Jules can see what's happening from Milton's house, and his head turns blue as he seems pissed. Joyce still happens to be singing, and as Jules’ head turns normal again, he continues listening to her. Shortly after, cops gather outside Sandy's house, but it turns out that she's still alive, and Danny is dead. Quite surprisingly, his head suddenly exploded while he was trying to strangle Sandy.
As Sandy tells the cops what happened, they don't believe her because heads don't just explode. Sandy insists that she couldn't have done something like that, but the cops ask how something extraordinary could've happened in her house. Suddenly, Sandy thinks about Jules, but she doesn't tell the cops anything. After they leave, she heads to Milton's house and goes straight to hug him while Milton and Joyce look confused.
Sandy then tells them what happened, and Joyce says she knew Jules would have powers. Milton asks if it means that he's dangerous, but Sandy says he’s only like that toward people who try to hurt them. Milton also asks if it's possible for him to hurt a good person, but Sandy believes they shouldn't judge Jules solely based on what they think. She adds that she thinks Jules is on their side, and they ought to be on his.
Joyce and Milton agree with this, and surprisingly, Jules appears to have heard what they said, and he stares at them from outside. Elsewhere, the police chief mentions that it's odd for someone's head to just explode without explanation. His officers agree with him, and he tells them to secretly follow Sandy because she might be covering up for someone. The next day, Sandy and Milton head to the supermarket to buy apples for Jules.
As they're leaving, Denise sees her dad and asks when he started hanging out with Sandy. Milton doesn't seem interested in talking to her, but Denise says sorry for the other day and mentions that she was only trying to help. Milton says he's okay, but Denise thinks it's weird that he keeps buying apples. Milton says the apples are for him, and he walks away toward Sandy's car.
When they get home, they sit together with Joyce and Jules at the dining table. Joyce then complains about a rotten smell around the house, and as they head outside, they see a dead cat on the ground. As they wonder if Jules brought it there, he gives Milton a sketch of some cats and his spaceship. Joyce asks to see the sketch, and as she takes a look at it, she realizes that Jules needs seven dead cats to fix his spaceship.
Since he has already found one, it means that he now needs six. Milton doesn't think this makes sense, but Sandy says they can't rule it out. As Milton asks if they're supposed to kill six cats, he gets an idea and decides to call Denise, who happens to work at a Veterinary clinic. Milton then asks what happens to the cats that die in her clinic, but Denise finds this weird.
As she asks why he wants to know, Milton just tells her to answer his question. Denise looks confused, but since she doesn't sound ready to tell him anything, he ends the call. Following this, Milton and Sandy head out to look for dead cats. On the way, two cops happen to be following them, but they don't know.
Meanwhile, Milton asks Sandy how things were for her husband before he died. Sandy says he was very forgetful at first, but that things eventually got worse. She then asks why Milton wanted to know, but he doesn't say anything. As Sandy asks if he's already forgetting things, he says he doesn't mean to, but she tells him to enjoy life and stop worrying about it.
After a while, they find a dead cat, and as they put it inside the trunk, the cops look shocked. When they get back to the house, Joyce asks how many they got, and they mention that it was just two. Joyce then decides to leave to see what she can find. Elsewhere, an agent at the National Security Center intercepts a call between Tim and Denise.
During the call, Denise tells Tim what their dad told the cashier about an alien living with him. After Joyce returns to Milton's house, she says that she found three dead cats, and that they just need one left. Almost immediately, two agents show up at Milton's house, and as Joyce sees them, she looks scared. Sandy says she'll take Jules upstairs, but as she turns back, she notices that he's not in the dining room anymore.
When no one answers the door, the agents leave the house, and Milton, Joyce, and Sandy look relieved. They then realize that Jules went to hide in his spaceship when the agents were around. Joyce says they need to act fast to find the last cat, and Milton suggests sacrificing her cat because she already mentioned that it can't see, hear, or walk anymore. Joyce says that her cat is like a child to her, and she walks away angrily.
A Great Place to Call Home (2023) Ending Explained
After a while, Sandy goes to meet Joyce to tell her to forgive Milton for what he said. However, Joyce says she's ready to sacrifice her cat because he's no longer the pet she once knew. Following this, she takes her cat to Jules, and he uses his powers to kill it. Just then, all the cats are taken outside, and Jules covers them with a silver cloth.
Surprisingly, this turns the dead cats into a device that Jules needs for his ship. The device also happens to be the only thing missing in the spaceship, and it starts working again. Almost immediately, the National Security Center gets an alert regarding this, and the two agents in the town are told to go back to Milton's house. Sandy looks happy for Jules, and since it looks like he's ready to leave, Joyce gives him a snow globe of the city as a parting gift.
Sandy also gives him a sweater, and Milton gives Jules his ID so that the alien won't forget what he looks like. Almost immediately, Jules gestures for them to come with him, and they look shocked. Sandy and Joyce don't seem ready to leave Earth, but Milton says he'll go. Sandy says he can't do that to Denise, but he mentions that he'd rather leave than allow his daughter to see him get worse every year.
Just then, his phone rings inside the house, and as he goes to get it, the caller happens to be Denise. She says sorry for how she has been acting, and she mentions that she was only worried about him. She then says that she wants to ask if he'll be around by the weekend so she can come over to give him a haircut. She says that they've been fighting for a while, and that she just wants to hang out with him.
She adds that she has seen him shut down before, and she doesn't want that to happen to them. Milton asks if she's not going to work, but she says she'll get someone to cover for her. She then asks if he'll be around, and he says he'll check his schedule. After the call ends, the agents start knocking on the door, and Milton runs to the backyard to warn the others.
Before they get caught, they enter Jules’ ship, and it flies away from Milton's house. Just a few minutes later, the spaceship lands in a deserted area close to the town, and Sandy realizes that Jules stopped to drop them off. Milton then tells Jules that he can't come with him again because he has decided to stay on Earth. After this, Jules leaves, and Milton, Joyce, and Sandy say goodbye to him.
A while later, Milton, Joyce, and Sandy meet again to talk about Jules. Joyce then asks if they think Jules remembers them. Sandy says she thinks so, but Milton just smiles as he thinks about Jules. Several weeks later, Milton's condition gets worse, and he also feels lonely at home.
One night, while he’s sitting down alone in the house, he sees a bright light appear in the backyard, and he looks happy because Jules is back to see him. After an alien spaceship crashes in his backyard, Milton tries to report to the cops and the members of the town council, but no one believes him because they think he’s just making things up due to his old age. Sandy and Joyce eventually realize that he’s telling the truth, and as they look worried that Jules might end up as a government test subject, they work together to ensure his safe return to his planet. In this story, we learn that it’s important to listen to older people with an open mind instead of just dismissing them because you think they’re imagining things.
