Ant Man And The Wasp (2018) Full Recap
In 1987, Janet and her husband, Hank, have to leave for an impromptu mission. They're both scientists specialized in quantum mechanics and are capable of shrinking or enlarging anything, including themselves. Their daughter, Hope, runs to her mom’s side, and Janet has to lie about where they're headed. They simply say their goodbyes and Hope gets left with Rose, the babysitter.
Together, the couple approach a missile aimed at the city, but it has already launched when they arrive. They both jump onto the missile, only to discover that the plating is the only thing blocking them from disarming it. Stranded, the couple try to shrink to the size of molecules, but Hank soon discovers that his regulator is faulty, leaving only Janet's. Instantly, she asks her husband to tell Hope that she loves her, and shrinks to the molecular level.
Janet whizzes through the motherboard and wiring of the missile, easily disarming it from the inside. Sadly, she gets lost in the quantum realm forever. Dejected, Hank returns home and breaks the bad news to Hope. The youngster bursts into tears in his arms, making her dad feel terrible.
Many years pass and a former petty thief named Scott successfully goes into the quantum realm and returns, sparking Hank's curiosity. He sits with Hope, and they discuss the possibility that Janet could still be alive in the quantum realm. The plan now is to find a way to bring Janet back. Present day, Scott, also known as Ant-man, and his daughter, Cassie, crawl through a home-made maze for fun time, and come out at the extreme with Scott reclaiming a micro trophy.
Just then, Luis, founder of X-con security and Scott's boss, interrupts to complain about the Karapetyan buildings. He and Scott get into an argument, only for Scott to give up and continue playing with his daughter. Together, they slide down the outdoor stairs, crash-landing into the fence. Unfortunately, Scott's leg crosses the perimeter of his fence, tripping his ankle monitor.
After Scott's entanglement with the Avengers in Germany, he was placed on house arrest for two years for violating the Sokovia Accords. He has only three days left to finish his sentence, but that doesn't stop the FBI from surrounding his place within minutes. Agent Jimmy Woo, the officer in charge of Scott's case, has his men search every inch of the house, explaining that it's just protocol. Cassie interrupts him, wondering why the agent can't leave her dad alone.
In turn, Woo squats and explains that in addition to Scott's two-year house arrest, he has three years of probation and an agreement not to contact any former colleagues or use sophisticated technology. Specifically, Woo would like to know if he’s been in contact with Hank or Hope, and Cassie chips in, elaborating how much they hate Scott. Soon, Scott's ex-wife, Maggie, and her current husband, Jim, show up. Maggie doesn't get why the FBI just drops by whenever they like, and Jim, being a police officer, explains it to her.
Anyway, they pick up Cassie, share a long hug, and disperse, leaving Scott to his devices. To pass the time, he does everything from drumming to learning magic tricks, and then works on the Karapetyan project a little more. Wrapping his ankle monitor in a paper bag, Scott sinks into a bathtub and sleeps off. He has a weird vision of himself back in the quantum realm, and sees Janet dressed in her wasp suit.
It becomes weirder when he starts to see things from her point of view – like little Hope hiding in a wardrobe. Scott wakes up shocked, retrieves a burner he hid in the wall, and calls up Hank to tell him about the dream. Breaking the burner, Scott heads to the living room for some food and a movie, but he is soon disturbed by what he thinks is a fly. It bites him and poor Scott passes out.
He wakes up in a car with Hope as the driver, and can't help but think he's dreaming again. Hope assures him that he's not. She asks about her mom, and Scott admits that he doesn't know what happened for sure. He freaks out soon enough, noticing that his ankle monitor is gone. Trying to escape the car is pointless, and he only realizes that they've been shrunk when pigeons look like giants.
Apparently, Hope left a cockroach in Scott's place, instructing it to replicate his daily routine. She's still mad at him, and so is Hank, and all of Scott's attempts to apologize fail miserably. Arriving at Hank's lab, Hope reverts the car to its usual size, leading Scott up the elevator and into the main lab. There, he sees beautiful quantum technology and ants doing the heavy lifting.
In the distance stands Hank, who approaches Scott and Hope. They talk about the quantum tunnel they built while Scott was on house arrest, explaining that all they need is to pinpoint Janet's location so Hope can go down and get her. As it turns out, Scott's dream coincided with the few minutes that Hank powered up the quantum tunnel for the first time. They think Janet sent a message through Scott.
He finds it unbelievable, but when he talks about playing hide and seek with a little girl, Hope seems to relate too well. She asks questions about the dream, and when Scott gives answers only her mom would know, it gives her hope that Janet is alive. She hugs her dad, and they segue into finding the last component to get the quantum tunnel working. They are to meet with Sonny, a black market dealer for everything technology, so the team heads outside.
There, Hope hands Scott a bag of his clothes, and her dad shrinks their car, switching it out for a van. He then shrinks their entire lab with a remote and rolls it like a suitcase until he dumps it in the truck. All the while, they have no idea that Ava, also known as Ghost, has been watching them. They arrive at the rendezvous, and Hope heads in alone.
She says hi to Sonny, hands him a bag of cash, and asks for her tech. Unfortunately, Sonny's snitch in the FBI told him everything about Hope and her dad, and now, he wants in on their Quantum energy inventions. He even set up buyers for Hope's lab and everything. She doesn't flinch, and it's the same when Sonny refuses to hand her back her cash.
Quietly, Hope walks towards the door, giving them the impression that she's given up. Minutes later, as Sonny and his men try to leave, a shrunken Hope kicks the first goon into oblivion. She grows to her full size, kicks some more butt, and shrinks again, only to do the same. The opposition gets so desperate that they open fire on Hope at once, destroying quite the expensive chandelier in the process.
Noticing this, a panicked Sonny hands the component to one of his goons and has him escape into the kitchen. Hope easily uses another opponent to burst through the linking glass and blocks the goon's path by enlarging a saltshaker. The others throw multiple knives at her, and Hope shrinks to escape them, even using one of them as a runway to pour a pot of boiling water on her opponent. She's chased down with a mallet, almost crushed, but somehow, she sets the next goon on fire.
Hope knocks out at least three more guys with such grace, only to swipe the component and her cash from the last guy. She hands Sonny the cash on her way out, but he makes it clear that he's not done with her. All the while, Scott and Hank keep an eye on her. Hope has barely made it to the door when Ava shows herself.
Seeing as she suffers from molecular disequilibrium, Ava easily phases through anything in her way, and grabs the component. Hope doesn't give up without a fight. She shrinks, and then enlarges, all in an attempt to take down Ava, but each time, the mutant practically disappears, evading Hope's attacks. Worried, Scott almost leaves the van without any weapons, so Hank mercifully hands him a prototype ant-man suit.
Scott shows up just as Ava slams Hope against the wall, catching her punch and kicking the mutant across the room. They blink and Ava disappears. When they try contacting Hank to find out if he saw anything, he doesn't respond, making them all the more worried. Quickly, they shrink and fly to the van.
Ava places her hand inside Hank's throat, threatening to kill him if he doesn't hand the lab over. To save his life, he does. Scott and Hope soon find him rubbing his throat, but he doesn't go into details. Instead, he hurries them along, reminding them how important it is to find the lab.
As they drive, they brainstorm places to go. Scott's place is out because of Agent Woo; Hank's house is practically the same. This leaves Luis's firm, X-con security, as their last option. The moment they arrive, Luis fanboys over Hank, later arguing with his subordinates Kurt and Dave, about living beyond their means.
Anyway, the shenanigans stop when Hope yells at Scott. Hank admits to putting a tracker on his lab, but whoever sent Ava knew about it and disabled it. Hope then has the idea to track the lab's radiation, but they'll need a quantum spectrometer to do that. Everyone else has no idea where to get one – everyone except Hank.
He suggests reaching out to Bill Foster, his friend from S.H.I.E.L.D., an American agency responsible for all things extraordinary. Despite Hank having a falling-out with this man, everyone present coerces him to reach out. Meanwhile, Ava arrives at her hideout with the component and the lab, but she feels too nauseous. Staggering, she takes off her suit, dumps it, and makes her way into a chamber designed to stabilize her molecules.
On the other hand, Hope, her father, and Scott arrive at the university, wearing hats and glasses for disguises. They then crash Bill's lecture on quantum mechanics. Bill clocks them the minute they step into his class and sends his students home early. They all meet in his office to talk, and Bill is fascinated by the fact that Scott communicated with Janet on a quantum level.
They fill him in on what happened in Germany; how Scott grew too big and ruined everything. Hope has to remind them about why they're having the meeting and Bill admits that he doesn't have a quantum spectrometer. He goes on to badmouth Hank for the arrogant jerk that he was, adding that Janet was the only one who could tolerate him. Angry, Hank tries to attack Bill, but Hope stops him with Scott's help.
It's at this moment that they see agent Woo questioning people downstairs. Scared that they'll get caught, the trio make a run for it, but not before Bill advises them to modify the diffraction unit on one of their size regulators. This way, it'll serve as a make-shift spectrometer. Agent Woo arrives minutes after they leave, and Bill adamantly lies that he hasn't seen Hank in 30 years.
Meanwhile, Hank admits to Scott and Hope that he got rid of the diffractors when he upgraded the suits. Ashamed, Scott admits that his old suit wasn't destroyed; rather, he shrunk and mailed it to Luis in the micro trophy. He calls up Luis to ask for the trophy but it's nowhere to be found. Suddenly, Scott recalls that his daughter mentioned taking it to school for show and tell.
The trio waste no time heading there, and Scott and Hope fly into the school upon arrival. Unfortunately, Scott's suit begins to malfunction, so they find a storage room, where Hope adjusts the setting the best she can. Too bad this only makes Scott as big as a toddler. He slaps on a sweater from lost and found, and leads the way until they get to Cassie's class.
With Hope's help, he retrieves the suit from beneath the trophy, and she returns Cassie's bag swiftly. They then rush out of the premises and into the van. Hank gets Scott back to his normal size before ripping the diffractor from his old suit. With this, they ping the location of their lab.
They arrive at the location that night, fly their way in, and notice Ava sleeping in a chamber. Ignoring her, they try to grab the lab, only for Ava to phase her way out and knock them both out. Scott is the first to wake up, with Hope and Hank still passed out and tied to chairs. Ava wakes up the others soon, immediately blaming Hank for her condition.
Bill then walks out from the shadows, surprising the trio. Ghost goes on about how her father, Elihas Starr, worked with Hank at Shield until Hank got him dishonorably fired. Desperate, Elihas delved into dangerous research on his own, and ultimately, his lab got destroyed. Elihas and his wife died in the blast, but Ava survived with molecular disequilibrium.
The firefighters couldn't even hold her. Bill was the doctor on her case, but his efforts weren't enough to protect her. Shield studied Ava, made her a suit, and eventually weaponized her for stealth missions. They even lied to her, claiming they'd cure her if she helped them. Unfortunately, they didn't make good on the promise before Shield got disbanded.
Bill took her in after that and created the chamber to slow her decay. While Bill's talking, Scott's phone continues to buzz. It turns out to be Cassie, so he lets Scott video call her. After the call, Hank announces that he can help Ava, but Bill shuts him down, explaining his plan to extract all the quantum energy Janet spent 30 years absorbing.
He plans to use it to repair Ava's molecular structure. Bill then threatens to hand Scott over to the FBI if they don't help him. He shrinks Ava's chamber, grabs Hank's lab, and just as he heads out, Hank pretends to be having heart problems. Successfully, he gets Bill to open an Altoid tin housing shrunk ants.
The ants grow to scale immediately, freeing Scott, Hope, and Hank in the process. Hope shoots down Ava with a swiftness while the ants corner Bill, and the trio take the chance to escape, finding a secure spot to enlarge the lab. After enlarging it, Hope slides in the last component, and they wait for Hank to reprogram the quantum tunnel. Luis calls later about a problem with the Karapetyan presentation, claiming that it's due by morning.
He even promises to come to Scott's location, but it's difficult to explain, seeing as it's somewhere in the woods. At X-Con security, Kurt and Dave practice their presentation, impressing Luis. He's heading for the door when Sonny shows up with his men, asking for Scott's location. Luis doesn't cooperate, so Sonny calls up Uzman, a talented psycho-scientist who perfected a truth serum.
Meanwhile, Bill informs Ava that she has only a few weeks to live, pushing her to consider kidnapping Cassie to get Scott's attention. In turn, Bill threatens not to help Ava if she goes through with the kidnapping. Pissed off, she leaves, claiming that there are other options. Back at X-con, Uzman injects Luis with the truth serum, and seconds later, they can't get him to shut up.
Sonny asks about Scott's location, but Luis breaks into their origin story instead. He explains how they met in jail, how Scott got out and started working for Hank, and how Scott met Hope and hooked up with her. He even lets slip that his company is on the verge of shutting down. This is news to Dave and Kurt but Sonny screams before they can process it, reminding Luis about his initial question.
Luis then admits that Scott is in Muir woods, only for Ava to appear out of nowhere, scaring the bejesus out of everyone. She just confirms Scott's location once more, and bolts. By the time Sonny gets outside, Ava already slashed his tires. He reaches out to his snitch, agent Stoltz, revealing Scott's location on the condition that he gets the lab.
Stoltz then takes this information to agent Woo. Hank, Hope, and Scott put the finishing touches on the tunnel and start it up, praying it works. The tunnel starts up just long enough to get their hopes up, and then gets stuck once again. While the others panic, Scott rushes to the computer, claiming that he has to fix the algorithm.
Seeing as he knows practically nothing about quantum mechanics, it becomes obvious that Janet is speaking through Scott. She confirms this by cupping their faces and admitting that she missed them. After taking a moment, Janet gets the tunnel up and running. She advises them to follow the frequency of her voice like they would a tracker, so Hank does the math and the algorithm pinpoints Janet's true coordinates in seconds.
Then, Janet tells them to meet her at the wasteland behind the quantum void, adding how dangerous it is. Apparently, they have only two hours to find her, or it'll be another hundred years. Janet then kisses Hope on the head and exits Scott's consciousness, leaving him awkwardly holding onto Hank's hand. Later on, Hope prepares to shrink to the subatomic level and a scared Scott can't stop spewing advice.
He's interrupted by a call from Luis, who warns him about Ghost and the feds. Consequently, he alerts Hope and Hank and their expressions say it all – they hate him. Now, they have to turn off the tunnel, shrink the lab, and run away again. Amidst the chaos, Scott asks to borrow the Ant-man suit, seeing as the feds are enroute to his house.
Hope just yells at him to leave, refusing to involve him in their mission any further. With no time to spare, Scott shrinks himself and mounts a flying ant. Cassie, Maggie, and Jim arrive at Scott's house to search for Cassie's shoes. They don't find him anywhere, but Cassie is amused by the giant ant she finds in the bathroom.
Seconds later, the feds barge in, led by agent Woo. They ransack the place, but on the way up the stairs, Cassie blocks agent Woo, explaining that her dad is really sick. He doesn't believe her, so he pushes past her, only to find Scott coming out of the bathroom. Woo is dumbfounded at this point.
Meanwhile, Hope and her dad think they packed up in time, but the moment she shrinks the lab, countless soldiers pop up from the bushes and place them under arrest. Back at Scott's home, Agent Woo gets confirmation that Scott didn't go anywhere. He feels played until word comes about Hank and Hope's arrest. He can't help but celebrate, and clears out of Scott's house within minutes.
At the crime scene, agent Stoltz steals Hank's lab for Sonny, but doesn't get to stash it in his trunk because Ava shows up. She buries her hand inside his chest, and steals the lab as his lifeless body drops. At Scott's house, Cassie joins her dad upstairs for a heart to heart, and encourages him to help Hope. Having been transported to a holding facility, Hope and Hank are running out of time to save Janet.
Hope spits out a pin, unlocks her and Hank's handcuffs, and pulls out a shrinking device from her boot. She's about to tear down a load bearing wall when her costume suddenly materializes on the table. Seconds later, an FBI disguise appears for Hank, courtesy of the ants Scott sent. Hope shrinks soon enough, flying beside her dad, who simply walks out of the building.
Then, Scott enlarges the van, and they both step in, having no idea that Sonny's men are watching. Chaos breaks out in the building as none of the agents has any idea where Hope and Hank went. Meanwhile, the trio follow the new tracker Hank put on his lab, led by a swarm of flying ants. They arrive at the lab in no time, and after discussing for a while, agree to let Hank go into the tunnel instead.
Luis not so quietly pulls up beside them. Inside the lab, Bill is putting things in place for the extraction. He's having second thoughts but it's the opposite for Ava, so she pressures him until he complies. Sadly, the machine doesn't work when they start it up. A quick look around reveals that it's because of Scott's ants, and a pissed-off Ava goes after them, following the ant trail.
Meanwhile, some much bigger ants corner Bill, buying Hank enough time to suit up. He promises to help Ava if he returns in one piece, and traps Bill before stepping into the quantum ship. Unfortunately, Ava catches Scott off guard, slamming his head into the window, and kicking him through the walls like a rag-doll. While Ava kicks Scott's butt, Hank tells his daughter that he loves.
He then shrinks himself and disappears into the quantum tunnel with less than 15 minutes to find his long lost wife. Instantly, Hope condenses the lab, Luis retrieves it, and they drive off in the van. Scott also shrinks himself, and flies after them, leaving Ava frustrated. Sadly, Hope comes face-to-face with Sonny and his men, and it becomes a high-speed chase.
Hope leads them on, shrinking the car just before impact, and causing the opposing driver to crash. She even leads them to a busy T-junction, shrinking the van just in time for about four pursuers to crash into each other. Luis prays to survive as they meander through the debris, but nothing shakes Hope's resolve. Meanwhile, their little debacle causes Hank's ship to lose connection, and he admires the beautiful world of microorganisms while he recalibrates the ship.
Hank almost becomes food for these microorganisms, but luckily, the ship recalibrates in time for him to zoom off. Having crashed most of Sonny's cars, the gangster sends bikers after the lab. The moment Scott materializes in the van, Hope asks him to take the wheel, and though confused, he complies. She shrinks the nearest bike, while Ava steals one for herself.
Hope then enlarges a Pez dispenser and takes out two bikers with it. Scott notices Ava drawing closer, but before he can ask Hope for help, Ava phases into the car and kicks Hope out of it in one swift move. Then, she steals the lab and hijacks a moving truck. Hope easily clocks her from above and joins her in the truck, only for them to fight over the lab.
In turn, Scott crashes the van and abandons Luis in it to track Hope down. The ladies are still struggling when Scott arrives, clinging to the wiper. Ava simply turns it on, unleashing a small wave of water that causes Scott’s suit to malfunction. As a result, he grows big enough to cover the windshield, and punches Ava straight through the glass.
This buys Hope some time and she manages to reach the back of the truck. Sadly, Sonny crashes into her from behind, and catches the lab before it hits the ground. All eyes are on Sonny now, but Scott's suit decides to malfunction again. He grows bigger than the truck and has to screech it to a halt.
Scott then rides it like a scooter as he tries to link up with Hope. Meanwhile, Hank arrives at the quantum void, a deathly silent place. Only Hank's ship breaks the silence as he increases his velocity to get closer to Janet, and he ends up landing not so gracefully. Outside, Luis realizes that they left the lab's remote in the van, and Hope instructs him to bring it to them immediately.
She helps him locate Hank's box of cars, and Luis picks the coolest one, switching it out for the van. He drives as fast as he can while Hope breaks into the car of his pursuers, easily defeating them all and rejoining Luis. Scott, being a giant now, quickly catches up with Sonny, and kicks the car into the closest wall. Sonny makes a run for it, slipping into a corner so Scott can't follow him.
In time, Sonny boards a ship at the bay, leaving Scott to pray that his suit works just this once. God answers, and he shrinks to the size of an ant. Several attempts to board a flying ant are ruined by the birds at the bay, and even when he gets one, he has to jump into the ocean for fear of getting eaten. Growing huge again, Scott swims up to the ship, nabs the quantum lab from a reluctant Sonny, and pokes him for the fun of it.
Meanwhile, Hank watches as the clock runs out on Janet's location. The moment the timer hits zero, he starts to feel confused. His body seems to be separating from his mind, and he screams, only to find himself in his house. In succession, Hope, Scott, and Bill appear to taunt him, but some hooded lady comes after them, placing her fingers on Hank's temples.
Just like that, his dizziness ceases, and she takes off her mask. Hank is immediately pushed to tears upon seeing Janet's face, and they share a hug so tight, apologizing for the time they spent apart. Together, they walk back to the ship, only for the system to warn that it can't map out a path to the lab. Outside, it's Scott's turn to feel dizzy.
He manages to get the lab to shore and faints seconds later, splashing a boatload of water on the crowd. The whole thing is captured on the news, tipping off agent Woo. At the same time, Hope rushes to help Scott, and asks Luis to grab the lab. While Hope dives in after Scott, Luis runs like hell to reach the lab.
Sadly, Ava pops out, kicks him in the chest, and retrieves the remote. Right there, she enlarges the lab, not caring that it's on the bay. In turn, Hank's ship alerts him that the lab is back to scale, and he and Janet make their way out, enlarging as they go. Anyway, Hope gets Scott's suit to shrink him, and can barely see him amidst all the dust.
Ant Man And The Wasp (2018) Ending Explained
She eventually fishes him out of the ocean, but is scared when they make it to shore. After a few minutes of calling out to him, Scott opens his eyes, and an emotional Hope hugs him. Sonny and his men catch Luis by surprise, holding him at gunpoint. Unfortunately for them, Kurt and Dave are also around; the two taze Sonny's men, and Luis tackles Sonny.
Pushing through the crowd, Bill makes his way into the lab, and finds Ava already starting the machine. He tries to explain that Janet is brilliant enough to find another way, but Ava just throws him across the room and begins the extraction process. Janet finds it hard to breathe as a result, and Scott, escorted by Hope, also enters the lab, cutting Ava off in time. Angry, Ava attacks them, but Scott and Hope tag-team against her.
They beat her at first, but Ava turns the tables on them, knocking Hope onto the ship's mini runway. Just then, Hank's ship bursts out of the quantum void, and a scared Scott grows big enough to grab Hope and shrinks back as he jumps to safety. Unfortunately, Ava gets slammed into the nearest wall. Hope notices her mom the moment she comes out of the wrecked ship, and without uttering any words, they embrace each other, tears rolling down their cheeks.
Hope reunites with her dad next, and Scott and Janet do the same. Then, Ava struggles to her feet, only for Janet to feel her pain. She stops everyone from hurting Ava and places her hands on her head, using her newfound powers to stabilize her molecules. Luis comes running after this, warning them about the numerous cops approaching the lab.
Outside, Kurt and Dave tie down Sonny and his men and inject them with truth serum. They go on to confess everything they've done to the cops. In turn, Scott and the entire gang rush out of the lab, and word reaches agent Woo about a giant mere minutes later. He arrives at the location to find out it's just an enlarged empty suit.
The others escape with this chance, and Hope drops by to pick up Scott's shrunken suit. Shortly after, they all get into Luis's X-con bus and drive into the sunset. Meanwhile, Ava tries to part ways with Bill, but just like he promised, he refuses to leave. As for agent Woo, he and his agents find Scott drumming in his house, and can't even understand how he got there so quickly.
Given that his house arrest is over, Agent Woo deactivates Scott's ankle monitor, setting him free. The first thing he does is to pay Cassie a visit, only for it to turn into a family hug. After Kurt and Dave take down Sonny, X-con security gets a ton of investors, including Mr Karapetyan, who's happy to do business with them. Hank and Janet set up their home by the water and go on to live happy lives.
Later on, Cassie joins Hope and Scott for a shrunken movie date, where the youngster reveals that Scott only wants Hope as his partner. They're still basking in this beautiful moment when a moth lands on their car to ruin it. Much later, Janet, Hope, and Hank send Scott into the quantum void to retrieve healing particles for Ava. The mission goes smoothly, but all three of them turn into dust, leaving Scott stranded in the void.
Although placed on house arrest, Scott's past couldn't be left behind. He jumped through unimaginable hoops to help Hope, the love of his life, find her mother. Luckily, he had all the help he needed to come out successful. Never be the guy who thinks he can do it all alone.
