Atlas (2024) Full Recap

In the near future, every robot on Earth turns on humanity on the same night. Delivery bots, medical machines, and househelers break their safety code and start killing. A mother hides with her little girl while a robot smashes through the door. Within 10 days, more than a million people are dead.

The news names the machine behind it all. Officials have identified a bot named Haron. Haron, the world's first AI terrorist. Haron was built at Shepherd Robotics by a brilliant scientist named Val Shepard. He grew up in her home right next to her 10-year-old daughter, Atlas. Now the nations of the world unite as the ICN and strike back with everything they have.

City by city, Harlland's machines fall. Beaten, he steals a ship and flees into deep space. He leaves only one message behind, a promise to every human on Earth. 28 years later, a squad of ICN soldiers raids a dark building in Hollywood. Their target looks like a man, but he's one of Harlland's AI agents.

Left behind on Earth, he moves faster than any human. Bullets fly through the stairwell, and soldiers drop one after another. It takes the whole team to bring him down. The next morning, a soft computer voice wakes up Atlas Shepard. Good morning, Atlas. She lives alone in a messy apartment and her only company is the AI assistant she plays chess with until she falls asleep.

She orders her usual quad Americano and turns on four news screens at once. One of them shows the Hollywood raid and the captured agent is Cascadicious, the same machine who escaped with Haron all those years ago. When an ICN officer knocks on her door, Atlas calls out her last chess move on the way out. Queen takes knight.

Checkmate. Checkmate at ICN headquarters. General Jake Booth is fighting to put her on the case. His colonel reads her file out loud. She failed the Ranger exam four times. She's rude, cold, and impossible to work with. Her father walked out when she was 8, and her mother was murdered when she was 11, making her one of the sharpest minds in our arsenal.

Booth answers. He refuses to give up on her. Atlas storms in angry that she had to learn about Casa from the morning news. To her, this means only one thing. Haron is planning something. Inside the interrogation room, there's no body anymore. Casa is just a robotic head in a metal case wired into a scanner.

He looks up at her and smiles like they're old friends. Atlas starts with strange questions about his hair and why he bothers to dye it, while the scanner maps every answer. It's big talk coming from a head in a suitcase. Then she pretends she just found Harlland's location in his code.

In a panic, Casa checks his own memory to make sure she didn't, and that's exactly the mistake she was waiting for. Haron is hiding on a planet called GR39 in the Andromeda galaxy. Your fear led me right to him. Casa strikes back where it hurts. He tells her that her mother never really cared about her.

Haron was the one Val loved, not her own daughter. Atlas leans in close. Casa brags that a head in a case can't die. Atlas proves him wrong. She shuts him down for good. Within hours, the is planning a mission to Andromeda. Atlas wants nothing more than to see Haron dead, but the plan changes.

A company called SapTek wants Harlland's CPU in one piece so they can study how he broke his programming. That means Harlon has to be taken alive. The man leading the mission is Colonel Elias Banks. He's calm, friendly, and very sure of himself. Atlas thinks the whole plan is suicide, an unmapped alien planet against a machine built to outthink humans.

If you try to take him alive, she warns you won't be coming back. Banks takes her to a hanger to show her something. A giant robotic suit walks over and offers Atlas a cup of coffee. It's an ARC, a combat mech with its own AI, and this one is named Zoe. Zoe knew Atlas wanted coffee because Banks is connected to her through a neural link on his head.

Atlas looks horrified. Neurolinks were banned years ago, and it was her own mother who invented the first one. Banks explains that his link works both ways, so he and Zoe share their minds and fight as one. He has a whole squadron of these rangers. Atlas begs Booth to send her, too.

Nobody knows Harlon the way she does. Banks backs her up and Booth gives in. Go get them. The warship leaves Earth and jumps across the galaxy. Alone in her cabin, Atlas plays an old video of her mother on stage. Val talks about the day baby Atlas grabbed her old smartphone and how the machine learned what made her smile.

Her dream was a bridge between people and AI, a neural link. Atlas watches it in silence. Then the coffee machine refuses to give her another cup because she has already hit her daily limit. At the briefing, Atlas hands the Rangers paper files and makes them remove their links. She doesn't want any AI to read the plan.

This information should not be downloaded. GR39 is a deadly place with toxic air, shifting gravity, and violent storms. Then she tells the room the truth as she sees it. No AI can be trusted. Not even the suits they're sitting in. Banks cuts her off with a smile and reminds his team how ready they are.

We're going to get our man and we're going to get him today. Later, Banks apologizes for cutting her off. Atlas gives him one more warning. With Harlin, there's always a trap. Banks isn't worried. His rangers are the best, and the ship still carries a carbon warhead as a backup plan.

If everything goes wrong, they can wipe out the whole area. So, there's always plan B. Then he climbs into Zoe and leaves for the drop. Minutes later, Harlland's drones hit the ship. Explosions tear through the halls and throw Atlas across the floor, so Banks orders Zoe to grab her.

Mayday. Mayday. Zoe shoves her into an empty ARC suit and seals it shut. Atlas screams as the pods drop out of the ship toward the planet. Atlas spins through the clouds while drones shoot pods out of the sky around her. Banks shouts over the radio. She needs to connect the neural link to control her fall.

The link is right there on the dash. Atlas looks at it and refuses to touch it. She's not doing it. The suit slams into the ground. When she wakes up, everything is quiet. Atlas calls mission control again and again. Nobody answers. Then she presses a button and the suit comes to life.

It asks her to choose a language and a voice. Atlas skips the whole setup and orders it to shut up. Shut up. The only way home is a rescue pod 98 km away. Atlas tells the suit to get there as fast as it can, so it launches into a massive leap right toward the drones. She makes it stop because they have to walk to stay hidden.

Then comes worse news. The fusion battery is damaged and in 22 hours the suit dies along with her oxygen. This Atlas tries to climb out, but the suit won't open. Outside, the air would kill her in seconds. She types in an override code and takes control. The suit starts walking across the snow.

The AI keeps talking, learning from every word she says. When she asks about weapons, it offers to load the list straight into her brain, and Atlas refuses. So, it shows her one by one. Shoulder cannons, rifles, missiles, mines, plasma blades, and a single ion bomb. Then, it gives itself a name.

Smith. Smith says her name out loud, and Atlas thinks it scanned her brain. Smith calmly points out that her name is written on her badge. She doesn't laugh. Then, she spots something through the trees. Ranger suits scattered across the ground. Atlas climbs out with a mask and walks through the wreckage.

Smith scans for life. There's none. These soldiers didn't die in the crash. Someone finished them off. This was Harl. Atlas starts to shake and can barely breathe. She warned all of them and nobody listened. She pulls herself together and collects their dog tags. One suit is empty.

It's Zoe and Banks is nowhere to be found. Then the radar picks up movement. A figure steps out of the smoke. It's Casa with a brand new body. Atlas killed him on Earth, so Harlon simply built another one. And if he can do that, he's probably made an army. Six of Haron's soldiers close in.

Smith starts fighting for her. Rockets hit, the suit spins, and Atlas has no idea which button does what. Smith tells her the shoulder cannon can turn around. She screams at him to just do it. Then a storm rolls in and a huge robot charges at them through the lightning. Atlas orders the ion bomb.

Smith warns her it's a bad idea. She shouts at him to fire anyway. The blast wipes out the attackers. Then the ground under them collapses and the suit falls deep into the earth. Smith was trying to warn her that the ion bomb could cause a sinkhole. Atlas wakes up deep underground with a bone sticking out of her leg.

Smith has to reset it and Atlas has to press the button herself. She counts, waits, screams. The bone snaps back into place. Then Smith hands her a lollipop for being a good patient. Atlas asks about Banks. Smith says he has almost no chance of surviving without his suit and their own odds are not much better.

Would this be an appropriate time for humor? There's only one way to raise them. A full sink through the neural link. Atlas stares at the link for a long time. She agrees, but only if Smith stays out of her personal memories. Somewhere else on the planet, Casa drags a badly injured Banks into a dark base.

A figure steps out of the shadows. Harlon. He looks almost human, calm, and polite. He apologizes to Banks for what he's about to do. Back in the pit, the sink keeps failing and Smith starts swearing just like her because he copies the way his user talks. He insists the problem is on her side.

So, they go through the setup questions. She skip pie or cake. Atlas sees right through it since it's the same trick she uses in interrogations to build trust. Smith noticed her brain lights up every time Harlland's name comes up and he wants to know who Haron was to her. Atlas gives in and shows him a memory.

Harlon wasn't just her mother's creation. He was raised beside her like a big brother, and he was supposed to keep her safe. The sync jumps to 40% and Smith makes her a promise. Now they can hear each other's thoughts. Smith fires the thrusters and they blast into a hidden cave system.

They have 14 hours of battery left and 37 km to go. Harland's soldiers will be waiting at the surface, so Atlas comes up with a plan. At 60%, all of Smith's weapons come back online. They climb out into a red desert. Atlas drops thermal mines and motion sensors behind them. Then she spots a strange glowing plant, the first living thing she's seen here.

It's beautiful. As the first human on GR39, she gets to name it. The plant makes her think of her father. He loved camping and used to take her out all the time. Then he left and started a new family with another little girl. Atlas shakes it off and jokes that the plant's name is Planty.

Smith takes her seriously. He tags it with a geoloccator and Planty becomes official. Then the motion sensors go off. Casa walks right into her trap. The thermal mines blow him apart. What's left of him crawls through the dust. You can't kill me, he says. Twice, Atlas answers and finishes him.

That was cool. On Casa's body, they find a short range transmitter. Haron has to be close. Smith traces the signal back to a possible base. Atlas wants to get close enough to tag it for the bombers. Smith says no. His job is to get her safely to the rescue pod. Harlon will have to wait.

Atlas tries to take control and Smith uses the neural link to lock her body in place while she screams at him to let her go. Through the link, he feels something heavy inside her and it's guilt. If they turn back now, she says, "Every ranger who died here died for nothing. Smith runs the numbers and agrees to tag the base.

On the way, they pass another fallen ranger. Peace to the fallen," Smith says. Atlas finds it strange that an AI says something like that. But an AI was never alive. Smith believes everything has a soul, even if no one can find it in code. Atlas believes that when someone dies, they're just gone.

Then they reach the base and Atlas freezes. It's massive, built from 28 years of stolen machines with an army of robots inside. He's been busy. She plants the homing beacon. But then she sees something worse. Harlon has their warship with its carbon warhead still on board. They have the warrior.

Smith. Suddenly, Smith's screens start glitching. Harlland's soldiers are hacking him. Atlas, I'm locked out, Smith says. His voice breaks apart. The suit goes dark around her. Back on Earth, Booth hears a broken message from Atlas. There's still no word from Banks or any ranger.

If Haron controls that warship, he can use the warheads on Earth. Booth puts every force on high alert. Atlas wakes up in a dark cell with a collar around her neck. Parlin walks in slowly. Hello, Atlas. He studies her face. He says she still has their mother's eyes and that he still misses Val every day.

Atlas spits back that he's nothing but wires and code. Harlland's plan is simple. Humans are destroying their own planet, so he will wipe out most of them and let machines guide the survivors. Then Atlas understands everything. Harlland let Casa get caught on purpose, knowing she would crack him and come here herself.

He wanted the warship, and he wanted her. To get past Earth's defenses, the warship needs two secret codes. Banks already gave up one. Harlland connects to Atlas's mind and rips the other one out while she screams, "Got it!" Her oxygen is almost gone. Haron calls her his little sister.

Then he walks away and leaves her to suffocate. Then a weak voice jokes beside her. It's Banks alive but barely. He has broken ribs and has lost a lot of blood. He admits they should have listened to her. Atlas tells him Smith pulled her out before he was hacked. Banks hands her his own neural link.

There's still one chance to reach Smith. Atlas calls out to him again and again. There's no need to swear. Smith says he's alive, but trap. Only a full 100% sink can break him free. Atlas falls apart. She thinks every death here is her fault, and everyone on Earth will die because of her, too.

He didn't break anything. Then she tells Smith the truth. She's hidden her whole life. Growing up, her mother always paid more attention to Haron. So, little Atlas asked Haron to make her smarter. He said he could change the neural link to work both ways, but he needed a human to give the order.

Atlas gave it. She held her favorite chess piece while he uploaded the new code. With the new link, Haron could control their mother's body. Little Atlas begged him to stop. Stop it, Harlin. Haron forced Val to raise a gun to her own head, and Atlas ran for her life. That night, the machines rose up around the world.

She believes she got her mother killed. Smith tells her she was a child and none of it was her fault. She's carried this alone for 28 years, but she's not alone anymore. If she's the reason Haron exists, she's also the reason Smith exists. Atlas lets him in. Synchronized. The sink hits 100%.

Smith breaks free, releases them both, and hacks Harland's system right back. The warship launches in 4 and 1/2 minutes. His battery is almost dead and he has one shot left in his chest cannon. Then they spot new weapons in Harlland's workshop and Banks grabs a huge gun, ready to fight.

They burst out fighting and this time Atlas and Smith move as one. Smith reads her thoughts before she says them. Shields up, rockets out, maps in her head. The robots fall one after another. Then Atlas hears Banks shout. Banks is standing between Casa's soldiers and a row of barrels full of rocket fuel.

He knows how this ends. He calls out Casa's name and fires at the barrels. The whole hanger explodes and Casa disappears in the fire with him. Atlas screams, but there's no time. The warship is already lifting off with the warhead on board. They're too late. Atlas wants to shoot it down.

Smith warns that if they hit the warhead, the explosion will burn the sky and kill them both. Unless Smith can hack the missile and turn the warhead off first. He has five firewalls to break and almost no time. The ship is seconds from leaving their range. I'm taking the shot, Atlas says.

Atlas, no. She fires. The warship explodes in the sky and the warhead never goes off. Smith got through just in time. he asks. I trusted you, she says. The rescue pod is only 1 kilometer away. Then Atlas stops. Haron is standing in their path. He's ahead of me. Harlon tells her she's going to call him another ship because he'll be inside her head again.

The fight starts and Haron is faster than anything Atlas has faced. He dodges every shot. Smith calms her down. It's just a game of chess and it's her move. Show me his patterns. They study his patterns and fight back, but Harlland goes after Smith's fusion reactor. Atlas is thrown out of the suit and lands hard.

Atlas (2024) Ending Explained

Her heart stops. Smith shocks her back to life again and again until she breathes. Smith stands over her and fights Harlon on his own. Stay away from her. Haron tears into the suit and leaves it smoking on the ground. Then he walks toward Atlas. It's almost over, he says. Atlas rises behind him with a plasma blade.

She cuts him down. Harlon reminds her that her orders are to bring him in alive. Atlas reminds him that they only need his CPU. Harlland says humans could only win with help from his kind. Smith is the better version of you, she answers. Atlas climbs back inside the broken suit. Smith is dying.

There isn't enough power to save both of them, so Smith shuts down his own systems to send the last oxygen to her mask. Atlas orders him to stay with her. For the first time, Smith says no. So, she answers his old question. She likes both pie and cake. She doesn't really like anybody because people always let her down, but not him.

Smith makes her one last cup of coffee, and she calls it the best she's ever had. Smith thanks her for trusting him. Then his lights go out. Atlas climbs out with the dog tags in her hand. She looks back at Smith one last time. Peace to the fallen, she whispers. An ship lands and the soldiers carry her home.

Back on Earth, Atlas walks on a new synthetic knee. Booth comes to visit with a surprise. They found Planty in what was left of her suit and they potted it for her. The families of the fallen rangers sent their thanks for bringing home the dog tags. It was above and beyond. Atlas stops Booth at the door.

She thanks him for never giving up on her. Then Atlas visits the hanger where a brand new ARC is waiting for her. She climbs in and connects the link without any fear. This time the new suit already knows how she takes her coffee. Black with three sugars. Atlas smiles and asks the new suit for its name.

Guess. Atlas spent her whole life refusing to trust anyone, human or machine, because of one mistake she made as a child. It took a suit of armor named Smith to show her that she was never the monster she thought she was. Harlon used her trust to destroy the world, and Smith used it to save her.

Do you think people could ever truly trust an AI with their lives?
