The Creator (2023) Full Recap

In the near future, robots cook our meals, drive our cars, and walk the streets as police. And the newest ones, called simulants, even wear real human faces. Then a nuclear warhead goes off in the middle of Los Angeles. Almost a million people die in a blink, and the AI built to protect them gets the blame.

America bans AI on the spot, and the president promises to hunt the machines for as long as they exist. But the countries of New Asia refuse. So, the West goes to war against every machine on the other side of the world. Their deadliest weapon is Nomad, a trillion dollar project, a giant military station that hangs in the sky over New Asia and wipes out targets with beams of blue light. 10 years after Los Angeles, a squad of American soldiers wades ashore at night under its shadow.

Glowing lasers mark the targets for the station above. They're hunting one name near Mata. The mysterious genius who designed New Asia's AI. Inside a beach house nearby, Sergeant Joshua Taylor has been living undercover for months. He's married to Maya, a young woman everyone believes is near Ma's daughter, and she's carrying his baby.

They've already decided it's a girl. When the soldiers move in early, the robots and simulants in Maya's home panic. We found an American, one of them says. A simulant with a shaved head grabs a rifle and the house erupts into chaos. Joshua's cover is gone. Maya stares at the husband she thought she knew.

They just want Nirmata, he says, reaching for her hand. Maya asks. The simulants raised her. They're not people, Maya, Joshua snaps. They're not real. Maya looks at him like he just slapped her. She backs away from him and runs out into the dark. They're not real. He chases her down to the beach.

Above them, Nomad opens fire. Maya climbs onto a fleeing boat with the simulants as the beams rain down across the shore. A wall of fire rolls over the water. Joshua is thrown into the sand, screaming her name. When the smoke clears, the boat is gone. 5 years pass. Joshua lives alone in a dark apartment, his arm rebuilt with metal after that night.

Army doctors keep scanning his brain, hoping he remembers anything about Nirmata. I'm doing great, he lies. Eat, sleep, work, repeat. But at night, he still dreams about a woman in a white dress on that beach. His job is cleaning up radioactive ruins at ground zero in Los Angeles.

One day, a robot worker gets torn apart in the rubble and screams for a child named Amy, just like a real person would. Joshua's co-workers stare at it. They're not real. One of them barks. Just programming. Just programming. On the news, Nomad is called humanity's hope, and the West is winning.

Joshua sits in a clinic while a nurse adjusts his robotic arm and tests his grip. One finger stays stuck. She tries another angle, and he just stares at the wall. Then, two visitors show up. General Andrews and Colonel Howell. They tell Joshua they found Nurmata's secret lab right where he used to live.

Inside is a super weapon called Alpha O, built to take down Nomad. Howell explains it with the story about the Neanderthalss, who lost their world to a smarter, meaner species. If Nomad falls, she says, the machines win and humanity goes extinct and we go extinct. Joshua doesn't care.

He lost his wife and his unborn child the night Nomad fired early, and he blames these exact people for it. I got TV to watch, he says. and walks off. Plays him a video. Anyway, it's grainy footage of a woman walking on a beach recorded two days ago. Joshua stares at it. This can't be real.

It's Maya. She's alive. If he guides the team to the lab, how will bring Maya back to him? Joshua says yes. On the plane, the squad gets the plan. The lab sits 400 m behind enemy lines in a region where humans, robots, and simulants all hate Americans. Howell sits beside Joshua and notices the photo of Maya in his hands.

She lost both her sons in this war. One of them fell for a simulant barmaid and she lured him into a trap where her friends took their time killing him. Don't get caught. They drop in at night where the lab should be. There's only a poor shanty village built right on top of it. The soldiers drag the farmers out of their homes.

One of them even threatens a little dog to get someone to talk. A terrified man points to the hidden entrance. Joshua leads them down through the tunnels and into the lab. Then the local police show up and they're not human. An army of robot cops floods the corridors. This is the police.

The doors only open with facial recognition, so the soldiers use the face of a fallen robot to get through. Gunfire fills the halls as the robots push forward. The squad leader orders Joshua and a soldier named Shipley to crack the vault and find the weapon. Shipley runs off to save another man.

The massive door rolls open and Joshua walks in by himself. His gun up. He expects a bomb. Instead, sitting quietly in the corner is a little girl. She has a shaved head, a white jumpsuit, and a glowing metal ring in the back of her skull. She looks up at him without a word. Alpha O is a child.

Above them, Nomad is already locking on. The squad can't stop the strike, so they sprint for the aircraft and take off without Joshua. Missiles slam into the village and the whole valley lights up. Joshua grabs the girl and runs through the burning grass as the lab collapses behind them.

By morning, he's found Shipley again, bleeding badly in a rice field. The girl follows them everywhere, silent. Joshua gets Howl on the radio, his voice shaking. It's a kid, he says. They made it into some kind of kid. It's a kid. Howell can't reach them. Her order is simple. Kill it.

Joshua lowers the radio and looks at the little girl staring back at him. She's eating rice with her fingers. They hide in a farmhouse where an old man sees the girl and gasps that it's a miracle. They've made a child. They've made a child. Joshua keeps his gun close. When he shows the girl a photo of Maya, she knows the face.

She whispers the name of a place. Diane Dan. Then robot police storm through the cornfield. Joshua shoves the girl and the dying shipley into an old truck. It's like a game. He lies. Hide and seek. He floors it with the cops right behind them. Okay, a game. Hide and seek. Howell's armored truck is already tearing across the same farmland, hunting them.

Police trucks roll down every dirt road. In the cab, the girl quietly plays with Joshua's gadgets while he drives. Shipley groans in the back. On the road, Joshua teaches her to pretend she's human. She says she likes candy, so he gives her a name instead. Alpha O becomes Alfie, and she repeats it like she's trying it on.

Shipley dies in the back, and the two of them hitch a ride toward the city. Howell's armored truck reaches the spot where they left the road, and her team finds Shipley's body. Her medic plugs a machine into his brain to wake him up for 30 seconds. Shipley's eyes snap open in terror.

He doesn't even know he's dead, and he keeps asking for his wife. Howl only wants one answer and she gets it. Taylor has a friend in the city. We got a traitor to kill, she says. Joshua and Alfie slip into a huge new Asian city glowing with ads. One billboard begs people to donate their faces to Simulants.

The face smiling down from the screen looks just like Maya. Joshua tries to turn finding Maya into a game. If Alfie points to her on a map, everybody wins. Alfie folds her arms. She doesn't like the game. At the bus station, Joshua keeps her hat pulled low over the metal in her head.

Police robots walk right past them. Alfie watches every one of them go by. On a night bus out of the city, Alfie leans against the window and asks how he was made. "My parents made me," he says. "My parents made me." "They're up in heaven now. Is he going there, too?" Joshua shakes his head.

Alfie thinks about it. We can't go to heaven, she says. Years ago, Joshua's old commander, Drew, gave him a long range tracker hidden in a ring. It was meant for Maya so the army could follow her to Nirmata. Drew warned him not to go soft. Joshua gave her the ring anyway. Now Drew runs a repair shop in the city.

Drew grins when Joshua walks in. He lives with Kami, his simulant girlfriend, who brings Alfie ice cream. He takes one look at Alfie and nearly drops his tools. He scans her with his goggles. She's the most advanced machine he's ever seen. Every other simulant is copy and paste.

She'll be unstoppable. But she can grow, and so will her powers. One day, she'll control every piece of technology on Earth. Drew digs out the old tracker from a drawer. Joshua holds his breath while it powers on. The ring is still sending a signal. Upstairs, Alfie sits with Cy and goes stiff.

"They're coming to get me," she says. They're coming to get me. Robot police storm the building. A robot officer kneels in front of Alfie. "You are safe from the American," it says. Cammy is gunned down in the hallway and Drew takes a bullet trying to cover them. Joshua grabs Alfie and the three of them crash out of the building and speed away in Drew's truck.

The tracker leads to the last place Joshua expected, his old beach house now sunk under the sea. He puts on a suit and walks into the flooded rooms. In the dark, he finds the ring. Something in Joshua snaps. He grabs Alfie and shakes her, screaming at her to tell him where Maya is.

Alfie just stares at him, scared. Joshua lets go, sinks down next to her, and keeps saying he's sorry. In the truck, Drew is dying. With his last breath, Drew gives up what the army hid from him. The night of the raid, they learned Nirmata was never Maya's father. It was Maya herself.

Then Drew's eyes close for good. Before Joshua can take it in, headlights flood the beach and armed soldiers surround the truck. Their leader is Harun, a simulant Joshua used to know from his undercover days. Harun takes Alfie and drags Joshua away in chains. on a boat. Harun lays out the truth about Los Angeles.

The nuke was a coding error, a human mistake, and the AI was blamed for it. Human error. The machines never wanted to attack anyone. They only want peace. Joshua begs to see Maya one last time. Harun refuses. That's exactly what the Americans want. He says they're using Joshua to find her.

That's what they want, you fool. Later, Alfie sneaks over to him. The others told her he wants to hurt mother. Joshua says, "I love her. "They said you're going to hurt mother." Harun's boats reach a floating village where robots, simulants, and human orphans live side by side, but Nomad is closing in.

Harun knows they can't hide from it much longer. His plan is to get Alfie up to the station and let her destroy it, even if it costs her life. They created us to be slaves. A simulant priest preaches to the crowd. A savior is coming, he says. With the power to end all wars. The children turn and look at Alfie.

After the sermon, the village goes quiet. Alfie tiptoes into the hut where Joshua is chained and unlocks him with a single touch. "Let's go find mother," she whispers. "Let's go find mother." Then the Americans attack. Gunships tear through the village and armored robots march across the bridges.

Alfie wants to stay and help. Joshua drags her toward the boats, but she won't leave the people who took her in. Harun's fighters, robots, and humans alike shoot back from behind sandbags. Harun fights at the front with the villagers, shouting orders as American gunships skim the river.

Simulant soldiers drag children behind the sandbags. Even a frightened monkey runs for cover between the huts. Howl sends in walking bombs, robots that march into a crowd and blow up. The first one detonates in a ball of fire. A second one starts walking straight toward Alfie. Alfie doesn't run.

She lifts her hands. The bomb robot shutters, then stops dead on the bridge. Its countdown restarts, and Joshua barely pulls her out before it explodes. Joshua is badly hurt in the blast. Harun's fighters pull him out of the ruins and patch him up. They carry him onto a boat with Alfie beside him while the village burns behind them.

On the boat, Harun reveals the secret behind Alfie. Maya finished her just weeks before the raid. She could have made her hate mankind, but she put her love for Joshua into the child instead. Alfie was built from a scan of a human embryo, their embryo. She's a copy of the baby Joshua lost.

Harun leads them high into the snowy mountains, past monks in orange robes, to a hidden temple carved out of wood. Dandan, Alfie's word means heaven. Dandan means heaven. Inside, Maya lies hooked to machines. She's been in a coma for 5 years since the night of the attack. The simulants can't let her go because they are built so they can never harm near Mata.

Joshua sits beside her. I was wrong, he whispers. Then he does what none of the simulants ever could and switches off the machines. Alfie whispers goodbye to her mother. Goodbye, mother. Howl bursts in with her soldiers. She wants to pull Maya's memories out of her head before it's too late.

She's gone, Joshua says. Howell threatens to put a hole in him. Then Harun strikes and Howell is killed in the fight. "Destroy Nomad," Harun tells Alfie as he sends her running. The soldiers catch Joshua anyway. Outside, they line up the captured simulants and gun them down while one of them begs for help.

It's just programming, a soldier shouts. It's just programming. General Andrews has Alfie strapped into a chair. She won't let them shut her down, but she trusts Joshua, so Andrews makes him do it. Joshua kneels beside her and whispers in her ear, "Am I going to heaven?" Alfie asks.

Then the EMP charges. The lights on her head flicker and her eyes go dark. Andrews orders her body burned at ground zero and Joshua asks to be there. It's not a funeral, Andrews says. It is to me, Joshua answers. On the way there, his team decodes what Joshua whispered. "It was a trick." Alfie wakes up in the back of the truck, shuts the convoy down, and the two of them disappear into the city.

Andrews's soldiers search the wreck, but the truck is empty. One by one, the cameras around the city go blind. Andrews knows exactly who is doing it. Alfie pulls a hood over her head, and they walk straight into the Los Angeles spaceport, the busiest place in the country. When the machine at the gate asks the purpose of her trip, Alfie answers, "To be free." The guard lets them through.

To be free. They board a shuttle to the moon while soldiers ground every flight behind them. Halfway up, Alfie takes control and steers it toward Nomad. The shuttle crash lands on the station and soldiers swarm aboard to find it empty. Joshua and Alfie are already floating through an airlock in space suits and Joshua starts planting explosives across the station.

Andrews panics and orders an early strike on every AI base left on Earth. Do not let that thing get aboard no matter. Joshua sends Alfie to the control room to cut the power. The missiles are already flying toward the villages below. Alfie closes her eyes. The whole station goes dark and the launch systems die.

Down on the ground, the missiles lose their signal. Launch systems lost power, sir. But the station is falling apart around them, and Joshua's air is running out. Alfie finds a lab full of simulants wearing Maya's face, waiting to be switched on. She takes the memory drive Joshua gave her, the one holding Mia's mind, and wakes one of them up.

Then she gets an escape pod ready. Andrew sends a killer robot after them and the airlock breaks. Joshua realizes only one of them can leave. Alfie cries that she doesn't want him to go. It's okay. Joshua says, "I'm going to heaven." Then he whispers, "I love you, Alfie." and pushes the pod into space.

Alfie presses her hand against the window as Nomad explodes behind her. Somewhere inside, in his last seconds, Joshua found a simulant with Maya's face waiting for him. Alfie had woken her up for him. The burning station breaks apart and crashes back to Earth in pieces. In the fields of New Asia, robots, simulants, and humans cheer as the sky clears for the first time in years.

Alfie climbs out of her pod and watches the wreck with her new family around her. Joshua started this story as the soldier who believed machines were just programming. He ended it, giving his life for a robot girl built from his own lost child and for the woman he once betrayed. The war he fought for most of his life ended the moment he learned who was real.
