Diary Of A Wimpy Kid (2010) Full Recap
A boy named Rodri wakes up his younger brother, Greg, and tells him to get ready for school. Greg looks confused, but Rodri says their parents have been calling Greg for an hour, and he's about to be late for his first day of middle school. As Greg looks at his alarm clock, he realizes that Rodri is right, and he looks scared. Rodri then tells Greg to put on his clothes because their mom is waiting for him in the car.
After Rodri leaves the room, Greg quickly tries to put on his clothes as he heads to the kitchen to get something to eat. He scatters the cereal around and ends up knocking down a chair in the process. Almost immediately, his dad, Frank, runs to the kitchen because he thinks there's a burglar in the house. As Frank sees Greg, he looks disappointed and asks what Greg is doing.
Greg then looks outside and realizes that it's still dark. Greg says he was getting ready for school, but Frank reminds him that school doesn't start till next week. He adds that even on school days, Greg shouldn't be getting ready at 4:00 a.m. Greg realizes that Rodri pranked him, and Frank laments that Greg has already woken his younger brother, Manny, who won't go back to sleep easily.
Greg's mom, Susan, brings Manny downstairs and asks why Greg is making so much noise around the house at 4:00 a.m. Greg says Rodri woke him up, changed his clock, and told him to get ready for school. Susan and Frank head up to Rodri's room and see him sleeping. They assume that Greg was just lying, and he's unable to convince them otherwise.
As they leave the room, Greg looks pissed. A kitty, a gumball machine, and Rodri smiles on his bed while still pretending to be asleep. The next day, Greg talks about the diary his mom got him so he can write his feelings about middle school. Interestingly, Greg sees the diary as a way to write many things that can be used to praise him when he becomes rich and famous.
Greg also believes he'll do fine in middle school, but he seems worried about his best friend, Rolley, who still likes playing around. A week later, Greg's alarm clock wakes him, and he looks out the window to confirm that it's not another prank. As he leaves his room, Rodri grabs him and forces him to smell his armpit. Greg looks disgusted and after struggling for a while at anyone, don't go anywhere.
Don't sit down. Rodri eventually leaves him. He then mentions that their mom told him to give Greg some advice for middle school. He says that Greg has to mind his business and stay in his lane by not talking to anyone or looking at anyone. Rodri also mentions that he doesn't think his brother will survive middle school.
Before he walks away, he tells Greg not to be seen talking to Rowley. Greg looks confused, but heads downstairs for breakfast. After eating his food, his mom tells him that they have to leave so he won't be late for his first day. When Greg arrives at school, he doesn't look really impressed, smaller than about 95% of the kids at my school.
Because he believes middle school is full of weirdos. He also notices that most of the students are taller than him, except a boy named Churro. As Greg heads to his class, he notices that some of the kids look way different, unlike him, who hasn't changed at all. When he gets to his classroom, he stares at his classmates and tries to find a good spot to sit because he doesn't want to end up next to anyone he finds disgusting.
Almost immediately, Rowley arrives in weird clothes, and Greg looks disappointed because everyone knows they're friends. Greg then asks Rowley what he's wearing, and Rowley says his family just came back from Guatemala and he got the clothes there. Before Greg can say anything, the teacher enters the class and tells all the students to take their seats. Later that day, while the kids are out in the field for physical education class, Greg asks Rolley where he thinks he'd rank in terms of popularity from 1 to 200.
Rowley doesn't really care about it, but Greg says he's sure his friend would be around 154 while he'd be at 19. He adds that he thinks he might have a shot at becoming the most popular kid in the school by the end of the year. Just then, a weird boy named Fggley comes over to meet the boys and show them a mole he has on his chest. Greg seems disgusted and implies that Fggley is at number 201 in terms of popularity.
Almost immediately, the PE teacher, Coach Malone, arrives and tells the kids to gather around. He then introduces himself and talks about how PE is a huge part of his life. After this, he divides the kids into two groups with the bigger kids being in one while the smaller kids like Greg, Rowley, and Churro end up in the other group. Malone says the bigger kids will be in shirts.
You guys are going to be shirts, while the other group will be skins. Greg doesn't understand why Malone wants the smaller kids to take off their shirts, but Shurog says the coach is just trying to make them feel bad about their bodies. After the kids take off their shirts, Malone tells them to play a game called Gladiators. Interestingly, the game requires the bigger kids to chase down the smaller kids and knock them down.
During the game, Greg and Roelly stick together and realize that they just need to outrun Churro because he's the smallest kid and easiest to catch. After Churro gets knocked down, Greg and Rowley quickly hide under the bleachers. Greg says they'll hide there for the rest of the class because he's not interested in playing such a barbaric game. Almost immediately, the boys hear the voice of a girl named Angie.
You're never going to be able to outrun these guys, who agrees that the game is barbaric. She also says it's nice to meet someone who is more interested in his mind, not his body. Rowley then asks why Angie is hiding even though girls get to jump rope. Angie says she's hiding from the pain and she also talks about her dislike for middle school.
Greg doesn't seem interested in talking to her, but Rowley looks pleased because he likes Angie and believes hiding under the bleachers is a cool spot. Angie says it's a perfect spot and that she survived all of sixth grade down there. She adds that she wouldn't mind having some like-minded company around. Greg still insists on leaving and he drags Rowley away with him.
Rowley looks worried that they could get knocked down by the bigger guys, but Greg says that getting crushed is better than being seen with a freak like Angie, who isolates herself. Just then, Greg sees a moldy piece of cheese on the ground and goes toward it with Rowley. As he's about to touch it, Churro stops him and says he almost got the cheese touch. Greg and Rowley don't understand this.
But Churro explains that the moldy cheese has been on the ground for a long time. He says that everyone usually stayed away from it until a boy named Darren touched it. Everyone freaked out when Darren did this and they all ran away from him. Darren tried to explain that there was nothing wrong with him, but no one listened.
As everyone kept avoiding him, he broke down in tears and started thinking of ways to get rid of the cheese touch. After a while, he eventually passed it to someone else by touching another kid. This caused a cheese touch frenzy that made the kids pass it around. This is where the cool guys hang out because no one wanted to be isolated.
The cheese touch was eventually passed on to a German exchange student named Dieter, who didn't understand what was going on. As everyone stayed away from Dieter, he felt bad and moved back to Germany with the cheese touch. Shurog adds that the cheese has been sitting patiently on the ground, waiting for its next victim. Greg and Raleigh look shocked and immediately stay away from the cheese.
Shortly after, Greg heads to the restroom and notices that the stalls have no doors. He looks disgusted and immediately heads out to meet Roly. He then complains about the missing doors and says he won't be using the restroom until he gets to high school. While the boys are in the cafeteria, they struggle to find a place to sit because no one wants them around.
The boys look disappointed and eventually sit on the ground near the trash. Fraggley soon joins them there and Greg looks disgusted. Shortly after, school closes for the day, and Rowley loudly asks Greg if he wants to come over to his house to play. The other kids outside the school hear this, and they make fun of Greg and Rowley for talking about playing like kids.
Greg doesn't like this. Something's got to change fast. And on the way home, he tells Rowley that guys their age say hang out, not play. Rowley says he's sorry, and Greg warns him not to say something like that again. As they almost reach Greg's house, Rodri and his band members also arrive in Rodri's van.
When Rodri sees his brother, he asks how his first day went. Greg says it wasn't bad, but Roelly confesses that it was terrible. As he talks about the things that happened, Rodri laughs and says he knew Greg wouldn't make it out of there alive, especially since he's still hanging out with Rolley. I've told you like a billion times that guys her age say hang out.
He also jokes that the only chance Greg has of making the yearbook is when they dedicate it in his memory. Rodri then walks away and Rowley asks if Greg wants to play a game with him. Greg says he has a better idea and he suggests sneaking into Rodri's room to find his middle school yearbook. Rowley thinks it's a bad idea because he knows Rodri doesn't like anyone looking through his things.
Greg doesn't seem bothered and he says that Rodri is still busy with his band. After Greg finds the yearbook, he sees the page for class favorites. And identifies a few categories that he thinks he would be qualified for. He says he'd be a good candidate for most likely to succeed, best looking, and class clown.
Rowley looks confused and says he thought the class clown had to be funny. Before Greg says anything, Rowley says they'd be a better fit for Cutest Friends. Almost immediately, Rodri enters the room and seems pissed at them for going through his things. He says he's going to kill Greg and that Rowley has to leave.
Instead of doing this, Rowley grabs Rodri's leg so that Greg can escape and hide in his room. This plan works out quite well, but Rodri says he'll wait until Greg comes outside. After a while, Greg begs Rodri to leave because he needs to pee. Rodri refuses to leave, and Greg is forced to hold it in.
When he gets tired of doing this, he decides to open the door to attack Rodrik. After opening it, he notices that Rodri only left his shoes at the entrance to make it seem like he was standing there. Greg quickly heads to the bathroom. And while he's peeing, Rodri comes out of the bathtub and scares him.
Greg looks really scared and ends up peeing all over Rodri. Susan sees this. And even though Greg tries to explain what happened, she scolds him and tells him to clean the bathroom. Greg started it. The next day at school, Greg and Rowley look at the notice board to figure out which extracurricular activities they can sign up for.
Rowley believes there are many good options that can help Greg become a class favorite. Before Greg can say anything, a girl named Patty pushes the boys and write something on the board. Patty and Greg have always hated each other since fourth grade when Greg insulted her and made her cry. As they insult each other, Patty says she's running for student council president and that if Greg gets in her way, she'll beat him up like she did in fourth grade.
Greg doesn't seem scared, and after she walks away, he talks about finding the right activity to help him become a class favorite. Suddenly, Angie shows up and asks what's up with being a class favorite. Greg denies it being anything serious, and Angie tells him to sign up for the school paper. She says they are the voice of the people, but Greg says he can't join the paper because it would be a conflict of interest since he plans to be featured in it a lot.
Angie looks disappointed. But she says she understands. Just then, Rowley tells Greg that they can sign up for wrestling. Greg likes this idea and thinks about all the moves he has learned from the fights he watched on TV. After the boys sign up for wrestling, Malone shows them some moves and Greg looks confused because they aren't what he expected.
Malone eventually divides the kids into three separate weight classes. Greg and Fggley end up in the junior weight class and Malone tells them to fight. Greg believes he'll easily take down Fggley, but much to his surprise, Fggley beats him and wins the fight. Later that day, Greg tells Rolley about how embarrassing it was to be beaten by the weirdest kid at the school.
He says he'll try to gain some extra pounds so he can move up to the next weight class and fight Rolley, who he believes will be easier to beat. The next day, Greg puts his mom's ankle weights into his socks before getting weighed by Malone, who seems impressed and moves him up to the next weight class. Greg looks happy, but Malone tells him that his new opponent is Patty. Greg cannot believe this, and he says he thought wrestling was for boys.
Malone says it was, but that Patty's parents threaten to sue the school, so they have to accept her on the team. When the fight begins, Greg complains to Malone that he can't grab Patty because she's a girl. However, Patty quickly knocks him to the ground, and Angie takes a photo for the school paper. This story makes the front page, and everyone at school mocks Greg.
This makes him sad because he believes the story will make him less popular at school. Two words, best dressed. Shortly after, Greg tells Rolley about his plan to start wearing a shirt and tie to school so he'd still get into the yearbook as best dressed. The next day, everyone admires Greg's new look.
But when he enters the classroom, he sees that Rolley is wearing the same thing. Everyone mocks Greg because of this, and he looks pissed. He then starts wondering if Rodri is right about ditching Rolley. He eventually decides against doing this, but he offers to teach Rowley how to dress and act differently.
Rowley doesn't really enjoy this, but he cooperates because he trusts his friend. Days later, on Halloween night, Rowley arrives at Greg's house, and Greg complains about his costume. Rowley says his mom made him wear it, and Greg talks about his plan to go trick-or-treating on the north side, which is where the rich people live. Before they can leave, Rodri shows up and figures out their plan.
He then scares them by telling a story about the woods near the north side. He says the place is haunted by ghosts of devil worshippers. Well, who are trying to find new kids to sacrifice. Rowley and Greg look scared, but they avoid the woods and still make it to the north side. After getting lots of candy from the rich people in the area, the boys look ready to head back home.
Just then, some teenagers in a pickup truck spray a fire extinguisher at them. Greg looks annoyed and threatens to call the cops, and this gets the boys pissed. Greg and Rowley quickly run away and head to Greg's grandmother's house. Even though no one is at home, Greg finds the key and enters the house to hide with his friends.
The teenagers look pissed and assume that the boys are inside with adults, but Rowley accidentally mentions that they're alone. Greg looks shocked and wonders why Rowley would say something like that because they'll now be stuck in the house. After staying inside for a while, the boys decide to stand up to the bullies. Unfortunately, Greg ends up scratching their truck with a weed cutter, and this gets them pissed.
Before the teenagers can catch them, the boys run into the woods. The teenagers seem scared of the woods. They're gaining this way. Woods, Greg and Rolley suddenly hear a scary voice. As they look scared, they quickly find their way back home. But it turns out that Fley was the one trying to scare them in the woods.
The next day at school, the principal announces that there are now open positions in the safety patrol. Greg believes it's another way to become popular, and he and Rowley head to the office of a teacher named Mr. Winsky to sign up when they get there. Mr. Winsky speaks highly of the safety patrol and tells the boys that they'll become enforcers of the school's laws.
After signing up, the boys are given reflective vests and they seem proud to be on the safety patrol team. Angie eventually sees them and looks surprised that Greg refused to sign up for the paper only to end up joining the safety patrol. She says that the safety patrol is the lowest of the low and it's usually for misfits. Greg believes she's just jealous and he tells Rowley not to listen to her.
Later that day, while Greg and Rolley are walking some kids home, it's those guys from Halloween. They see the teenagers from Halloween heading toward them. Greg and Rolley quickly pretend to be kids, and the teenagers don't see them. Days later, Greg and Roelly play in the snow together.
In the process, Greg accidentally breaks Roy's arm, and this leaves him shocked. The next day at school, Rowley's broken arm makes him popular, and some kids sign his cast. Greg looks surprised and tries to steal the attention by telling the other kids that he was the one who broke Rowley's arm, but this only gets him insulted. Later that day, during lunch, Greg notices that Rowley now has a seat in the cafeteria while he's still stuck on the floor with Fggley.
Angie sees Greg and asks about his ambition to become a class favorite, and he says it's still going well, even though he knows it's a lie. The next day, he lies about getting injured on his hand, but no one seems to care much about it. Shortly after, Greg learns about the open cartoonist role for the school paper. When Greg gets home, he starts drawing funny cartoons, which he plans to submit.
Rowley eventually shows up and suggests drawing a character who will say the words Zooie Mama. Greg thinks it's a boring joke, but Rowley says he really likes Zooie Mama. Greg seems pissed and tells Rowley to submit it if he likes it so much. Rowley says he'll do that and he also leaves the house.
The next day after school, Greg tells Rowley to walk the kids home because he didn't come with his raincoat. Rowley says he can't get his cast wet and he offers to give Greg his raincoat. Greg accepts it and walks the kids home in the rain. On the way, he sees a pickup truck on the road and assumes that it's the teenagers from Halloween.
He looks scared and tells the kids to hide inside a hole at a nearby construction site. As the kids enter the hole, Greg realizes that it's not the teenager's truck. Before he can get the kids out, a woman named Mrs. Irvine sees him and mistakes him for Rowley because of the raincoat.
As she asks what he's doing at the construction site, he runs away and Mrs. Irvine eventually sees the kids inside the hole. That Mrs. Chznik is no longer contagious. The next day at school, Rowley gets appointed as the new cartoonist because of his zoo mama joke. Greg cannot believe this, but everyone congratulates Rowley.
As Rowley tells Greg that he thinks he's becoming famous, Mr. Winsky calls him into his office. Greg knows what it's for, but he doesn't say anything. He then stays outside the office and hears Mr. Winsky scolding Rowley for terrorizing the kids. The teacher doesn't give Rowley a chance to say anything before suspending him from the safety patrol.
Rowley looks sad as he leaves the office and he tells Greg that he doesn't even know what he did. Greg considers telling Rowley what happened, but he decides against it because he wants to protect his reputation. Later that day, Susan notices that Greg is bothered about something, and she asks what's wrong. He then says he's in a tough situation because he knows something and whether he tells the truth or not, it could hurt someone.
As he looks sad, Susan tells him to trust his gut and try to do the right thing. Following this, Greg decides not to tell Mr. Winsky the truth because he wants to protect himself. However, he tells Rowley what happened and plays it down as a joke. Rowley looks sad and says that Greg isn't a good friend.
He adds that Greg only cares about himself and he's done being friends with someone like that. Greg feels bad about this and despite his attempts to get Rowley to change his mind, Rowley continues ignoring him. Days later, Mr. Winsky learns the truth and suspends Greg while he promotes Rowley to team captain.
Greg looks unhappy and watches Rowley get praised by their other classmates. The next day, Greg overhears Rowley inviting a boy named Colin to a sleepover at his house. Greg seems offended and decides to make Rowley jealous by going to Fraggley's house. Unfortunately, things don't turn out as expected, and Fggley ends up frustrating Greg throughout the night.
The next day, Greg decides to audition for a role in the school play so he can at least make it into the yearbook as the most talented student in his class. During the audition, Greg happens to have the best voice, and the drama teacher offers him the lead role. Patty doesn't look happy about this because she wants the role and she threatens to report the teacher to her mom who is the PTA president. The teacher eventually gives up and asks if Greg would like to be a tree.
Greg says he's not interested, but Churro convinces him to change his mind because he'll get the chance to throw apples at Patty. Greg then agrees, but the teacher mentions that she has changed the script to remove the part about throwing apples. Greg looks disappointed, but still continues acting as a tree. On the day of the school play, Greg gets distracted by Manny and Rodri, and he starts regretting his decision to become a tree.
He also ruins the performance, and as Patty scolds him on stage, he throws apples at her. This leaves everyone disappointed, and Susan seems annoyed at Greg, but Frank thinks Patty deserved it. Days later, Rodri shows Susan an invitation to a motherson dance that Greg had thrown away. Come and get it, then.
Susan seems interested in going to the dance and Greg looks pissed. He then tries to get revenge by setting Rodri up to be grounded. This makes him happy and as he calls Rolley to tell him what happened, he remembers that they're no longer friends. Later that night, Susan takes Greg to the dance and encourages him to make up with Rowley.

Following this, Greg goes to meet Rorowelly to ask if they can get ice cream after the dance. Colin immediately shows up and says they have plans, and Rowley supports him. This leaves Greg disappointed and he returns to sit with his mom. The next day at school, Rowley meets Greg and says he needs the racing game he left at Greg's house because he wants to play it with Colin later tonight.
Greg refuses to give it up. And as the boys argue about it, Patty sees them and encourages them to fight. As they suddenly start fighting, the teenagers from Halloween arrive at the school and send the other kids away. One of them then sees the moldy cheese on the ground and tells Rowley to eat it.
Rowley doesn't want to do this, but the teenagers force him. And someone finds out what these guys made him do. Malone shows up to send the teenagers away. Just then, Patty notices that Rowley ate the cheese. Before she can say it out loud, Greg interrupts her and says he's the one who ate it.
He says he ate it to show the other kids how stupid the school is. He also complains about how the kids care about unnecessary things. as he tells those who support him to step forward and join him. Patty says he has the cheese touch and everyone runs away. Interestingly, Angie saw everything that happened with the cheese and she commends Greg for standing up for his friend.
Greg then asks if Rowley would like to come over and play with him. Rowley looks happy and says he would and the two friends leave school together. Days later, Patty distributes the yearbook to the kids in her class. Greg asks for his copy, but Patty drops it on the floor and says she's way too smart to touch someone who ate the cheese.
She then sees Rowley and hugs him before giving him a copy of the yearbook. Greg and Angie find this funny and joke about Patty being too smart. And. Shortly after, Greg and Rowley check the yearbook and realize that they made it to the class favorites page as the cutest friends. After Greg's first day in middle school, he decides to do whatever it takes to become a class favorite.
His best friend, Rowley, supports him and even suggests doing things that could make Greg popular. Interestingly, Greg allows his quest for fame to get to his head. And he sets up Rowley to take the fall for one of his mistakes because he wants to save his reputation. This breaks their friendship.
