You Don’t Need to Study Hard, Just Be Lucky.

In this future world, hard work doesn’t guarantee success, luck does. Students don’t study for exams, they hope for the right frequency. And the system is clear: if you’re lucky, you win. If not, no effort will save you.

‘SPOILER ALERT’

In a world where people emit different frequencies which can be used to determine their fate, a girl named Marie sees an apple on the floor beside her legs. As she picks it up, a boy named Zak approaches her, and she realizes that the apple belongs to him. She then fakes a smile and returns the apple to him. Shortly after, all the kids enter their classroom to take a test. As the teacher, Mrs Cook, tells them to start, they all put on blindfolds and open their test booklet to begin.

When they’re through, Cook distributes their results to them and tells them not to open it until they get home. After the kids leave the school, one of Marie’s classmates, Thomas, asks what she got. Marie says she got 127, but Thomas doesn’t believe it because people rarely get above 100. As he drags her result sheet, he confirms what she said and returns it to her before walking away.

Just then, Marie’s friend, Nicola, mentions that she only got 67. She adds that she’s quite relieved because it could’ve been much lower. Almost immediately, Thomas brings Zak to meet Marie and says that he’s one of those who got a very low frequency on their test.

Thomas adds that he wants to see the reaction that occurs when someone with a super-high frequency like Marie meets someone with a super-low frequency like Zak. As they stare at each other, the clouds suddenly start to get darker, but rain only falls on Zak. Marie finds this interesting, but before anything else happens, Cook calls Zak to come to her office because his mom is around.

As Zak walks away, Marie checks her watch and realizes that they can only stand together for one minute before something happens. Much later, Marie heads home and gives her result to her dad, Mr Fortune. After he sees what she got, he asks if she knows what it means and how her frequency will change her life.

Marie says she does, and Mr Fortune asks how she feels about it. Marie doesn’t initially know what to say, but she eventually mimics Nicola and tells her dad that she’s quite relieved because her frequency could’ve been much lower. Mr Fortune finds this weird, but he doesn’t say anything.

The next day, Mr Fortune and his wife, Mrs Fortune, head to Marie’s school to learn more about the implications of her super-high frequency. They meet a teacher named Miss Anderson, who mentions that Marie’s frequency is great, and that the school is keen to make sure that she fulfills her potential. Mrs Fortune then asks if there’s anything they can do about Marie’s emotions.

Anderson says it’s a common side effect of having a high frequency, and that it works in such a way that the higher the frequency, the lower the empathy. Mrs Fortune doesn’t seem satisfied with this, and Anderson mentions that there are certain things they can try to see if the situation might change, because she believes that knowledge determines destiny. Mrs Fortune says she doesn’t want her daughter to become an experiment, and that she wants Marie to make friends, have fun, fall in love, and have a normal life.

Anderson then mentions that Marie’s parents have to understand that those things aren’t possible for Marie. Years later, Marie grows older and participates in a science fair competition at her school. As Anderson gets to her table to inspect her work, Marie explains that her device can help people find true love by analyzing their frequencies and matching them with someone whose resonance is compatible.

Anderson seems surprised and asks if that’s how she defines true love, but Marie mentions that it’s how nature defines it. Anderson asks what her plans are for the project, and Marie says that her dad wants to put it on the market because people are obsessed with finding true love. Anderson asks if Marie also wants to find true love, but she ignores the question.

As her device then beeps, she tells Anderson that she has a 95 percent match with another teacher named Mr Thales. Anderson seems to like Thales, and Marie suggests going to meet him already. Anderson then mentions that Marie’s device has many possible applications, one of which is the ability to find friends.

Marie confirms this, and Anderson asks if she has tested it on herself. Marie says she hasn’t, but that everyone wants to be her friend. Anderson asks how many friends she actually has, and Marie says none. Following this, the teacher tells Marie to try to change that by using her device to find a friend. Almost immediately, Zak drops something in the room, and as everyone looks at him, Marie forces a fake smile and turns back to Anderson.

The next day, Marie decides to conduct an experiment to try to see if she can be friends with Zak even though he has very low frequency. As he meets her outside the school building, he seems quite nervous, but Marie remains calm and checks her watch before jotting down some things in her notebook. Zak then tries to say something, but Marie mentions that they don’t have to talk to each other.

Zak says he wants them to talk, and that he’s a bit worried that nothing will happen now that they’re together. Marie says it’s a possibility, and Zak wonders why there are some students watching them. Marie then tells him that they’re probably waiting to see the reaction that occurs when they stand together for one minute.

After this, Marie sees that it’s almost a minute, and they watch a plane fly just above them. Suddenly, some bags start falling in between them, and Zak quickly moves away from Marie. Before he runs away, the headmistress stops him and mentions that he and Marie will be sent to detention for going close to each other despite knowing what would happen.

Anderson says they can’t be together in detention, and the headmistress says it’s fine. She then asks why Marie would even try an experiment like that. Marie just stares at her and says nothing, and the headmistress eventually walks away with Zak.

Anderson then asks if Marie likes Zak, but she says she was only conducting an experiment. Anderson believes it’s a false experiment because their frequencies can never change. Since they’re opposites that can never attract, Anderson tells Marie not to waste her feelings on Zak because the two of them are just not destined to be together.

Marie doesn’t really believe this, and she mentions that knowledge determines destiny. A while later, Marie calls Zak to meet her for another experiment inside the school building. As he arrives, Zak seems nervous again, and Marie mentions that if they can stand together for more than a minute, it will prove that their frequencies aren’t fixed.

After she mentions that she thinks they should talk, she asks how he’s doing. Zak then says he’s feeling tense, nervous, and breathless. As the timer hits one minute, he suddenly passes out, and Marie starts moving back slowly while taking down some notes.

Much later, they meet again for another experiment, and Zak suggests that they should hold hands. Marie thinks it will change the variables of her research, but Zak believes they can just do it for data collection. Marie doesn’t get this, but as some dogs start to bark, Zak realizes that one minute is nearly up, and he runs away after telling her that he wants to ask her something.

The next time they meet for another experiment, Zak asks Marie to be his date for their graduation. Marie seems confused because their graduation is next year, but Zak says he won’t have many other opportunities to ask her again. Marie doesn’t seem sure that they can have a one-minute date, but Zak says it’s possible.

Marie then agrees to be his date, and as smoke comes out of a nearby room, Zak walks away. Much later, on their graduation day, Marie looks happy to see Zak just as he arrives for their date. Before she says much, Zak mentions that he loves her and hopes that she at least likes him.

Marie says she doesn’t, and Zak asks about their meetings. Marie says it’s for data collection, and Zak asks if that’s all she has been doing with him. Marie says she was also experimenting with flirting, but that she has stopped. Zak looks surprised and asks if she really doesn’t feel anything for him. Marie says she doesn’t feel things, and that people even call her a machine.

She adds that those people are correct because she doesn’t love her family. She also mentions that anytime he sees her smiling, frowning, laughing, or crying, she’s only pretending and waiting for it to be real. She says it’s a side effect of her high frequency, and that she and Zak aren’t destined to be together.

Zak looks disappointed by this, and on the stroke of one minute, he walks away. Many years later, Marie grows much older but continues to not display emotions in her daily life. On her birthday, her family and friends show up at her house to throw a surprise party. During the party, Marie sits alone for a while until Zak suddenly approaches her. Marie looks shocked to see him, and he acknowledges that it has been a long time since they last saw each other.

She then asks where he has been, and he mentions some countries, including one named Kaichi. Marie asks where Kaichi is because she hasn’t heard it before, but Zak ignores the question and says that she doesn’t have to pretend to be happy to see him. He then asks how she is, and she says she’s still a machine.

After this, she asks why he’s back, and he says that he wants to continue their experiment. Marie says that nothing has changed, but Zak says it has for him. Marie looks confused by this, but Zak tells her to check her watch.

Marie realizes that he has been standing with her for more than a minute, and she looks surprised. Zak then says he can’t stay, but that she can meet him at a nearby train shop the next day so he can help her. The next day, as they meet at the shop, Zak drops a phone on the table, and Marie asks if he’s expecting a call. He says he is, and Marie asks how he could stand with her for more than a minute. Zak says he changed his frequency, but Marie believes it’s impossible.

Zak then mentions that knowledge determines destiny, and Marie asks if he really found a solution. Zak says he did, and that he no longer has a low frequency. Marie then asks how he can help her, and he says it’s like an energy exchange process, which involves them holding hands.

Marie doesn’t sound sure about this, but Zak says he’s sure that she’ll have feelings for the first time in her life. She then puts down her hand and tells him to hold it. After he does this, Marie suddenly feels different and asks what’s going on. Zak then says a strange word and mentions that she loves him. Marie looks confused, and Zak asks how she’s feeling.

As she says she feels much better holding his hand, the ground suddenly starts vibrating. Zak says he thinks nature is rebelling, but that it should settle down as long as they stay together. Zak seems particularly happy about this, and it turns out that he has always liked Marie since she first gave him an apple just before their test when they were younger.

After their results were distributed, Zak’s mom, Mrs Midgeley, came to the school and was informed by Anderson that he had an abnormally low frequency. She added that Zak would never be in the right place at the right time, and that it’s best for his mom to take him away from the school. Mrs Midgeley believes her son is gifted, and that he should be allowed to stay.

Anderson says it’s best to ask what he wants, and as Zak sees Marie outside the window, he mentions that he’d like to stay in the school. When he resumes school again, Zak can’t stop staring at Marie, and he starts thinking of how to change his frequency so he can get close to her. Days later, he goes to the house of his friend, Theo, to see what they can come up with.

Before Theo shows up, Zak meets his friend’s dad, Mr Strauss, in the living room. As Zak sees a piano, he sits in front of it, and Strauss asks if he can play. Zak says that people like him always struggle with rhythm, but Strauss doesn’t believe it’s a factor that should stop him from being able to play the piano.

He mentions that Zak can do it, but he just needs heart, soul, and a little imagination. Strauss then tells Zak to play any three notes in any order. As he does this, Strauss plays along with him, and Zak seems to enjoy doing this. After they’re done playing, Zak says he likes patterns, but Strauss mentions that they’re actually called progressions.

Zak says he can see them, and Strauss tells him that he might just be a good player. After a while, Zak goes to meet Theo, who explains how he and Marie are different. He also mentions that their frequencies are meant to repel, and that if Zak wants any chance with Marie, then they have to solve the problem that occurs at the intersection of their frequencies.

Zak then writes this as OXV, and he keeps looking at the letters with Theo as they wonder what to do next. Years later, at the science fair competition, Zak sees Marie staring at him and calling him to walk toward her. He seems nervous and wonders if he should do this.

Meanwhile, Theo develops a strange application that allows him to predict what will happen in the next five minutes. As he shows it to Anderson, he mentions that Nicola will come to their table soon, and that Zak will walk across the room a few seconds later. He also says that the school fire alarm will go off shortly after that.

Anderson doesn’t believe this, and she thinks it’s impossible to create something like that. Just then, Nicola comes over to the table, and Zak walks toward Marie, but his mom sends him back to his stand. Marie then walks to his stand to ask if they can meet after school.

Before Zak says anything, the fire alarm goes off, but Marie just keeps smiling at him. A while later, Theo gives Zak a magnet that can disrupt his frequency and possibly make him spend more than one minute with Marie. Unfortunately, this doesn’t work, and the boys work on a pill that can alter Zak’s frequency.

This also doesn’t work, and Zak is unable to date Marie while they’re in school. Much later, after graduation, Zak seeks a research grant and gives a presentation on the concept of irony, which he believes can be used to change one’s desires. One of the members of the panel mentions that Zak’s research sounds like he’s trying to fool fate.

As he says it’s something he doesn’t believe is possible, Zak’s request is denied, and he looks disappointed. He eventually heads home and calls Theo to ask if they can spend some time drinking together. As they meet up, the boys start experimenting with different drugs, and after a while, Zak says a word that causes a fluctuation in his frequency.

Theo and Zak are shocked by this, and they realize that saying some words can temporarily raise someone’s frequency. They then develop a phone that can determine the right words to say to increase Zak’s frequency based on his environment. With this, he’s able to spend more than one minute with Marie on her birthday. He also takes the phone to the train shop and says some of the words generated by it while he’s with Marie. In the present day, Zak and Marie seem incredibly attracted to each other, and they head home together.

The next morning, Zak sees Marie’s notebook on the table and goes to touch it. Marie then wakes up and says that he can open it. As Zak does this, he sees that Marie was only ticking her notes instead of writing anything there. Zak looks shocked, but Marie says that the real reason she always acted like she was taking notes is that she didn’t always want to have to look at people or have them look at her. The next morning, Zak and Marie leave the house and head to the train station.

On the way, a car nearly hits Marie, but Zak quickly holds her back. As they get to the train station, Marie sees a train passing by. She looks confused and asks Zak if that was supposed to be their train. Zak jokingly mentions that she’s welcome to his world, and Marie looks nervous.

As Zak asks what’s wrong, Marie says that she has never waited for a train before. Zak then comforts her to make her feel less nervous. Shortly after, they arrive at Mr and Mrs Fortune’s house, and Marie hugs her dad. Mr Fortune seems confused and cannot believe that Marie is really hugging him tightly.

Mrs Fortune also wonders why she’s with her old classmate, but Marie tells her parents that she and Zak can now stay together for more than one minute. As they watch the clock in the house to confirm this, Mr Fortune looks shocked, and Marie tells Zak to tell her parents how he helped her. As they sit together at the dining table, Zak talks about how he uses words to balance the environment.

Mr Fortune still seems confused, but Zak explains what he’s talking about with the wine glasses on the table. Suddenly, Marie mistakenly knocks down one of the glasses, and her parents look shocked because she has never spilled water on the table before. Mrs Fortune asks Zak what he has done to her daughter, but Marie defends him and says it’s what she wanted.

Mrs Fortune believes that Zak basically stole Marie’s frequency, but he explains that he only balanced it for both of them. He also shows Marie’s parents the phone he uses, and as Mr Fortune takes a look at it, he looks amazed and mentions that Zak might’ve just made the most important discovery of all time. He adds that the possible applications of the device are great because it could make everyone in the world equal.

He then invites Zak to his lab the next day so that he and his scientists can understand the device better. The next day, Zak calls Theo to tell him that they have to meet at Mr Fortune’s lab, but his phone goes straight to voicemail. Zak then goes alone and meets Mr Fortune, who introduces him to his scientists, who happen to be Nikola and Thomas.

Nicola seems quite impressed with the work that Zak and Theo did. As she asks Zak for more details, he explains everything to them, and after their meeting, Mr Fortune gets a poster designed for the phone. The next day, while Zak and Marie are together, he jokingly says one of the words on the phone and tells her to kneel before him and call him “Master”.

Surprisingly, Marie does this, and as she wonders why she did it, she looks at the device and wonders if it had something to do with it. Zak remains silent, but Marie asks if there’s something he wouldn’t normally do. Zak initially tries to avoid the question, but she tells him to answer it. He then says that he doesn’t like violence, but Marie reads one of the words on the phone and tells him to slap her.

As he does this, Marie realizes that it’s the device, and she sarcastically says it’s probably love. Later that night, she meets with her dad and his scientists to report what happened. Nicola and Thomas then confirm that the words from the phone have a side effect. Nicola mentions that the words can allow people to do whatever they’re told without hesitation. Suddenly, Marie realizes that Zak has been using the words on her, and it’s also what he used to make her love him.

As she accuses him of making her fall in love with him, Zak denies this, but Marie doesn’t believe him. Mr Fortune also seems pissed and wonders if Zak was just lucky to have developed the device. That night, Zak tries to call Theo to talk about what happened earlier, but he still happens to be unreachable. It then turns out that they actually talked about the side effects after developing the phone. The next day, Mr Fortune gets Zak to sign a document to prevent any further work on the device.

Zak initially hesitates and says that he wants to speak to Marie, but Mr Fortune convinces him to sign it. After he does this, he heads home and tries to call Marie, but her line just goes straight to voicemail. Zak looks disappointed by this, and he starts wondering what to do next.

Days later, Zak gets a feeling that he’s being watched, and this gets him scared. One day, while he’s at the park, he keeps looking around and eventually sees the letters OXV written on the bench he’s sitting on. This leaves him shocked, and he quickly heads home. When he gets there, he meets some agents of a secret government organization inside his room. Before he says anything, he’s told to only nod his head to answer the questions he’s about to be asked.

Just then, the leader of the agents, Bridges, says a strange word and asks Zak if he stole the technology used to make the OXV phone. Zak nods to show that he didn’t, and Bridges says another strange word before asking if he leaked the device’s program or schematics. Zak nods again that he didn’t, and Bridges says one more strange word before asking if he has any plans to manipulate the world.

Zak doesn’t nod to this question, and Bridges looks surprised. As Zak is then allowed to speak, he asks if the strange words were meant to make him tell the truth. Bridges says they were, and Zak asks how he knows that they work. Bridges says he has used them before, and as Zak looks confused, the agent mentions that he has a job for him. Following this, Zak is taken to a secret location where he sees Marie, Mr Fortune, Nicola, and Thomas.

Bridges then mentions that they’re now officially government employees whose main task is to find a way to neutralize the threat which the device known as the Manual poses to the country. He adds that the files on their tables contain all the information on the subject, including everything that happened the last time it was in the public domain. He also mentions that the manual is a really old piece of technology, which was the main cause of many wars in the past.

After saying that the device’s last known date of any successful usage was in 1760, Bridges adds that no one knows why it disappeared in the past, but that he’s sure the scientists can find a solution to it now that it’s out again. After this, Mr Fortune tells his team what they have to do first, but he ignores Zak and leaves him to work alone. Days later, as Mr Fortune and his team argue about the best way to neutralize the Manual, Zak interrupts them and suggests making an anti-manual.

He adds that they can distribute bad copies of the Manual to convince people to stop using the device. Nicola thinks it’s a devious plan, but Marie supports Zak’s idea. Almost immediately, Nicola discovers another side effect.

She then shows Bridges and his agents that there is a particular word that can be used to make people sit down instantly. She adds that there are other words like that, and Bridges immediately bans them. He also asks if Zak knew that the device could do something like that, but he just stays silent.

A while later, Marie goes to tell Zak to use one of the words from the device to make her stop loving him. Zak feels sad about this, and he initially hesitates, but Marie gets him to do it. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work, but before Marie can say anything, Bridges enters the room.

After Marie leaves, Bridges shows Zak his work on irony and mentions that it’s quite clear that he has an obsession with manipulation tactics. Zak tries to explain himself, but Bridges tells him not to speak until they decide what to do with him. Zak looks disappointed by this, but he starts working again to find a solution.

After thinking about everything that has happened, Zak suddenly realizes what he needs to do. He then tells one of the agents that he needs to speak to Bridges. The agent says he’s not supposed to talk, but since he really needs to go out, Zak uses a strange word to freeze the man. He then heads to Theo’s house to meet Strauss.

As he enters the house, Zak asks about a strange sound he’s hearing, and Mr Strauss confirms that it is responsible for keeping everyone’s frequency balanced while they’re with him. Zak realizes that it’s why he was able to play the piano years ago, and he tells Strauss that he has to help him. Suddenly, someone knocks on the door, and as Strauss opens it, Marie comes inside to warn Zak that the agents are about to break in to arrest him.

Zak doesn’t seem ready to leave, and as he tries to get Strauss to help him, the agents force their way in to find him. Before they do anything to Zak, Mr Strauss suddenly starts playing his piano, and Bridges asks what he’s doing. Strauss then mentions that he’s giving them what they want, which is what Zak already figured out.

As they look confused, he mentions that music is the antidote they’re looking for. They don’t seem to believe this, but he tells them to try the strange words again. Bridges then tries one of them and realizes that Strauss isn’t lying.

He looks surprised and asks if Strauss is playing any special music, but he says it’s just Mozart. He adds that when Mozart plays, everyone is at the same frequency. He also mentions that the words generated by the Manual come from a book that used to exist many years ago, and that the first composers were actually writing music to give people control of their minds.

Over time, their music kept weakening the book until it was rendered useless in 1760, when Mozart wrote his first composition. Bridges asks what happens when the music stops, but Strauss says it can never stop. Interestingly, it turns out that many years ago, just after Theo was informed that he had an average frequency, Strauss told him about their family history and gave him a book with the words OXV on the front page.

After this, Theo starts learning how to play the piano. Unfortunately, he doesn’t play it with the passion his father expects, and Strauss complains about this while mentioning that for hundreds of years, their family has produced the players of the antidote. After a while, Theo spends his time checking out all of Mozart’s work.

He then discovers a simple code, which he extrapolated from Mozart’s work. As he shows it to his dad, he mentions that he believes the code is what governs the universe, but that it’s not perfect yet. He says he’s still working on it, but his dad doesn’t really get why he’s so interested in the code. Much later, Theo partially cracks the code and uses it to see the future at the science fair. He then starts helping Zak find a solution to his problem so that he can get together with Marie.

On the day Marie and Zak meet at the train shop, Theo also sits there with Strauss and tells him that he has seen the future. Strauss doesn’t get this, but Theo says that some people will come to his dad soon for the antidote, and that he’s going to tell them about it. A while later, Zak and Marie go to see a doctor who prescribes some musical notes for them to get better.

Marie then asks if her feelings are real, and the doctor says they are. She then looks happy and realizes that she’s really in love with Zak. After they leave the doctor’s office, Zak keeps thinking about everything that happened and mentions that he believes fate brought them together. As he says it wasn’t their choice, Marie asks if it matters to him, but he says it doesn’t. Marie says the same thing, and they look happy as they walk home together.

Elsewhere, Theo meets his father and tells him that he has confirmed that free will is an illusion. He adds that he’s not really interested in that anyway because he cares more about finding the universal symphony. He then talks about how much he enjoys watching people’s futures and destinies. Strauss seems scared of his son, and he leaves after saying goodbye to him. Suddenly, Theo checks his phone and stops the music at the restaurant, after which he says he has figured out the perfect code for the universe.

After meeting at a young age, Zak and Marie felt a connection, but their difference in frequencies meant that they couldn’t spend more than a minute together. Zak eventually figures out a way to balance their frequencies, and this helps Marie feel things for the first time in her life. Even though Zak initially tricked Marie into falling in love with him, they eventually realize that being together had always been their destiny. Do you believe in fate, or do you believe that things just happen due to coincidences?
