Koi... Mil Gaya (2003) Full Recap
In Canada, a space scientist named Sanjay Mea spends every night trying to talk to the stars. He has built a computer that turns the sacred sound om into a signal and beams it deep into space. The people at the space center think he's wasting his life. Night after night, he sits by the speakers and hears nothing but static.
His pregnant wife, Sonia, is the only one who believes in him. One night, the machine starts beeping on its own. Sanjay runs to wake Sonia, his eyes huge. So, Dr. Merrell, they talk to you. Strange tones are coming back through the speakers, following his own pattern. Somebody out there is answering.
They're responding, he whispers. Sanjay rushes his recordings to the space center. The scientists laugh in his face. One of them asks if the aliens said hello and asked about the weather on Earth. When he explains the alm signal, they mock that too and tell him to go home and stop daydreaming.
That night, Sanjay drives home with Sonia beside him. They talk about the millions of worlds out there and whether anyone lives on them. Then bright lights flash across the sky. A glowing ship hangs right above the road. Sanjay can't take his eyes off it. The car flies off the road and smashes into the rocks.
Sanjay dies on the spot. Sonia survives, but the crash leaves a mark on the baby inside her. Her son, Rohit, is born with brain damage. Years later, a doctor holds up his X-rays and gives Sonia the choice. An operation could fix him, but if it fails, Rohit could end up paralyzed or dead.
Sonia can't take that risk. She takes her boy back to India and raises him in the quiet hill town of Casawi. Rohit grows into a tall young man, but his mind is still a child's. He races around town on his little kick scooter and crashes straight into Constable Sukuani. The constable picks himself up and threatens to throw him in a lockup next time.
Rohit just says sorry and rolls away to his best friends. A gang of school kids half his size. Bitu Bunty and the others treat him like one of them because in every way that counts, he is. The kids love him, but they also squeeze him for pocket money and pull pranks on him all day.
Rohit doesn't care. He's too excited about moving up to the seventh grade with them. He shows his mother his new books and talks about his new class. Sonia doesn't know how to say it. Rohit failed again. All his friends are moving up without him. Rohit breaks down and cries that they'll leave him behind and go to his class without him.
Sonia goes to the principal, Father Roberts. He says Roit is far too old for that class and needs a special school, but there isn't one in town. Sonia begs for one more year while she tries to get a transfer to Delhi. Father Robert's size. This is the last time in math class. The teacher asks what x + 3 y equals.
Roit works hard in his notebook and holds up his answer. The teacher reads it twice. It's right. Rohit beams and the teacher tells him to raise his hand first. Next time. Rohit's old classmate Raj Sakina rules the town with his gang of bikers. One afternoon, they challenge Rohit to a race.
Motorbikes against his little scooter. Rohit's friends cheer him on. He kicks as hard as he can and somehow stays ahead. Raj's gang ends up crashing in the dirt. Then the town's new police chief, Inspector Khan, pulls the bikers over for speeding. News, local paper. Raj smirks and asks if he knows who he's talking to.
Khan knows exactly who he is. Raj is the son of the district collector, Harbon Saxina. Khan doubles the fine and promises to print it in the local paper. Around the same time, the Malhotra family moves to Casawi. They're old friends of Harbons, and he greets them like family. He can't believe how much their little girl has grown.
Her name is Nisha, and she's just come home after years abroad. The next day, Rohit and the kids are stuck at a bus stop late for a 3-hour movie. A young woman in a jeep pulls up and asks for directions to Shanti Villa. The kids offer to show her the way if she gives them a lift.
They pile into the back and Rohit squeezes in with them. By the way, my name is Nisha, she says. Nisha asks what people here do at night. Sleep, Rohit says. She laughs, thinking he's joking. Then the kids start calling her auntie, and Roit joins in and makes fun of how she talks.
Nisha slams on the brakes and throws them all out. At home, Sonia scolds Rohit and makes him promise to say sorry. Then she shows him a dusty room he's never been in. Inside is his father's old computer. She tells him his father used it to talk to people living on other worlds. Rohit stares at the machine like it's magic.
That weekend, Harbins throws a big party to welcome the Malhotras. Rohit and the kids go straight for the buffet. In all the chaos, a plate of food ends up all over Nisha's dress. She looks up and sees Rohit standing right there. Rohit feels awful. He writes sorry on a piece of paper and wants to leave it where she'll see it.
He sticks it to the seat of her scooter with his chewing gum. Nisha sits right on it. Her friends laugh and Raj sees his chance. Raj and his gang corner Rohit on his way home. They shove him around and smash his scooter to pieces. Rohit picks up the broken parts and cries all the way home.
When Sonia sees him, she marches straight to the cafe where Raj's group hangs out. Rohit is 20some on the outside, she says, but inside he's maybe eight. He laughs when people laugh at him because he thinks they're playing. Then she says she's glad her boy isn't normal like them. Nisha looks down at the table and can't say a word.
At school, Roit tries to sit in on the computer class. The teacher, Mr. Matther, laughs at him. Rohit says his father was a big scientist and he wants to be just like him. Mr. Matther tells him to go learn from his father then and kicks him out. Nisha sees the whole thing. That afternoon, she shows up at Roit's house with a shiny red bicycle to replace his scooter.
She says thank you and sorry and makes Raj's friends apologize too. Rohit forgives everyone in 2 seconds and rides the bike in circles around the yard, grinning from ear to ear. From that day on, Nisha is his friend and she starts showing up wherever Rohit and the kids are. Nisha starts reading everything she can find about kids like Rohit.
She prints out an article off the internet and reads it twice at the kitchen table with her dad. Then she brings Rohit home and her parents fuss over him, pour him tea, and laugh at his stories. Nisha learns that Rohit wants to learn computers more than anything, so she offers to teach him. Rohit takes her to his father's computer and they get it running.
The screen fills with stars and blinking letters telling him which key to press next. Roit hits them one by one and the old alm signal rings out across the hills. Nisha laughs and they shut it down without a second thought. At a big basketball game, Raj's team plays while Nisha and Rohit watch from the stands.
Roit cheers louder than anyone and Nisha laughs along with him. Down on the court, Raj keeps glancing up at the two of them and he isn't happy about it. After the game, Raj and his friends trap Rohit in the empty gym. They push him around and humiliate him until he can barely stand.
Then they leave him alone on the court. That night, Roit can't sleep. He goes back to his father's computer and turns it on. Tears in his eyes, he presses the keys again and again. The signal flies out into the dark sky. In the middle of the night, the whole town shakes. Nisha and Sonia wake up to a blinding light outside.
A giant spaceship sweeps over Casawi, knocking out the power. Roit runs outside and stares up at it with his mouth open. By sunrise, the ship is gone. By morning, the news is everywhere. A UFO was spotted over a hill station in northern India. Army helicopters circle the hills and officials walk around the landing spot with Harbins and Inspector Khan.
Khan believes the ship came and left, but something doesn't add up. He finds strange footprints leading away into the forest. One of them stayed behind. The kids run to Rohit with crazy news. They saw a strange little creature in the woods yesterday. Rohit and Nisha follow them into the forest and start searching.
Then something moves behind a tree. A short blue creature with huge eyes steps out wrapped in an old raincoat. Everyone freezes. Rohit slowly holds out his hand. The creature reaches back and touches it. It's scared and lost and it has no idea where its people went. Back at the station, Khan spreads the footprint photos across his desk.
Sukuani leans over his shoulder and swears they looked like a giant frog. Khan ignores him and calls the space research center. He wants every inch of that forest search. Rohit and the kids sneak the creature back to his house. They name him Jadu, which means magic. He's so hungry that he eats everything they put in front of him, and he loves anything sweet.
Nisha laughs as he makes strange happy noises and copies the kids every move. Then Sonia comes home early. Roit panics and stuffs Jadu in a laundry basket. Sonia has no idea there's an alien in her house. As soon as she leaves, the kids pull Jadu out laughing. The kids quickly learn Jadu's secret.
When the sun hits him, he gets stronger and can move things just by looking at them. When the clouds roll in, he grows weak. Soon, Jadu is playing games with them in the fields, floating balls through the air and making the kids laugh until they fall over. Constable Sukuani nearly catches them once, but the kids hide Jadu just in time.
Meanwhile, Harbins and Mr. Malhotra have big plans of their own over a game of chess. They agree that Raj and Nisha would make a perfect match. Both mothers love the idea. Nobody bothers to ask Nisha. Raj tells Nisha their parents want them married. Nisha says liking someone doesn't mean marrying them.
Raj snaps. He's not blind. He says he knows something is going on with Rohit. That evening, Rohit proudly tells his mother that Nisha is his girlfriend. Sonia's heart breaks a little. She gently tries to explain that Nisha is a friend and that grown-up love is complicated. Rohit doesn't understand why he can't be like other young men.
He goes to bed upset and Jadu sits quietly in the corner watching him. Jadu has figured out that something is wrong with his friend's mind. When the sun rises, he uses his power on him. Rohit wakes up and reaches for his glasses. He doesn't need them anymore. In class, the math teacher pulls a brain teaser out of a 10th grade book just to watch everyone squirm.
It's about a turntable going 720° a second and how many times it goes around in a minute. Roit stands up and answers in seconds. 120. The teacher's mouth drops open. Mr. Mather calls Rohit's answer a fluke and fires a hard computer question at him. Roit answers that too in front of Father Roberts.
Then he reminds Mr. Mather that a computer didn't make humans. Humans made computers. The whole room goes quiet. In the schoolyard, Raj's gang spots Roit and throws a basketball at his head like always. This time, Rohit catches it with one hand. When one of them grabs his shirt, Rohit just pushes him away, and the guy goes flying across the yard.
Rohit looks at his own hands, just as shocked as everyone else. Nisha hears the stories and takes Rohit up to a lookout over the lake to talk. She wants to talk about Raj and all the wedding talk, but the Rohit sitting on the railing isn't the boy she knew. He talks fast, makes jokes, and looks her straight in the eye.
Nisha doesn't know what to say. That night, Sonia finds Jadu and almost screams. Rohit begs her to listen. Jadu is his friend, and if the police find him, they'll take him away. Sonia looks at her son standing tall and speaking clearly. She agrees to keep the secret. Meanwhile, a team from the space research center arrives in Casawi.
Khan shows them his footprint photos. The lead scientist is sure an alien is hiding somewhere in these hills and they want it caught alive. Rohit walks out of his house in a bright new outfit and the kids can't believe their eyes. Then he enters a dance competition at the club. Raj laughs when he sees him on the list.
Rohit hits the stage in red pants and a blue shirt. He spins, drops to his knees, and flips his sunglasses onto his face right on the beat. People jump up on the tables to see him. Nisha laughs and claps along, and Rohit walks off with first place. Raj is fuming. He challenges Roit to a basketball match, his team against Rohits.
Rohit accepts, but there's a problem. His teammates will be the kids. On game day, the whole town packs the stands. Raj's team is twice the kid's size, and they play dirty from the first whistle. They elbow and trip the kids every chance they get. Raj's team takes the lead. Jadu is tucked away behind the bleachers, but clouds have covered up the sun.
Without sunlight, he has no power. At halftime, Rohit's team is getting crushed. Rohit looks up at the sky and prays. Then the clouds part. Sunlight pours onto the court and Rohit flies. He soarses over Raj's team and slams the ball through the hoop. The kids start scoring too, floating up to the basket like they weigh nothing.
The crowd goes crazy as the kids pull ahead. When the final whistle blows, Roit's team wins the Hero Cup. Raj is left standing on the court humiliated in front of the whole town. That evening, Harbain goes to the Malhotra's house and calls Rohit a fool. He says no decent family would let their daughter near a boy like that.
Rohit walks in and calmly takes his argument apart. Then he says he's madly in love with Nisha. Harbin storms out. Raj wants revenge. He and his gang chase Rohit's friends through the hills on their bikes. In the panic, the kids drop the bag with Jadu inside. Constable Sukwani finds the bag and gets the shock of his life.
When he looks inside, he calls for backup. Rohit snatches the bag and runs. When Khan arrives, the bag is empty. Jadu had already slipped away. Khan is sure Rohit is behind it. Back home, Sonia tells Rohit there is only one way to save Jadu. He has to be sent back where he came from.
Rohit says he can't lose his friend, but he knows his mother is right. Rohit sits down at his father's computer and sends the signal one more time. But before the ship can answer, the police surround the house. Inspector Khan kicks in the door with his men. Rohit fights with everything he has, but there are too many of them.
Koi... Mil Gaya (2003) Ending Explained
Jadu cries out as the officers drag him away from the kids. Then someone hits Rohit from behind and he drops to the floor. They throw a net over Jadu and carry him out into the night. Rohit wakes up surrounded by his mother Nisha and the kids. Jadu is gone. Sukuani tells them the government is shipping the alien off to America.
Rohit doesn't wait. He races through the dark after the convoy and catches it on the mountain road. He leaps onto one of the trucks and fights his way to the back. He rips open the cage and Jadu looks up at him with tears in his huge eyes. The guards shout and open fire, but Rohit is already gone.
He carries Jadu through the trees and up the mountain as fast as his legs will go. Then a blue light fills the sky. The spaceship has come back for Jadu. It lowers into the clearing and the door slides open. Jadu turns back to Rohit one last time. They hold hands without a word. Then Jadu walks into the light and the ship rises into the stars.
Rohit stands alone in the clearing. Tears running down his face without Jadu. Rohit seems to slip back into his old self and nobody can prove he did anything wrong. In fact, the government honors him at a big ceremony. Sonia cries in the crowd. A few days later, Raj's gang tosses a ball at Rohit and dares him to kick it.
Rohit kicks it so hard it slams right into Raj's face. Rohit stares at his own foot. Jadu's gift never left him. Rohit and Nisha look up at the stars and thank their friend. Rohit started out as the boy the whole town laughed at. The one who was left behind in the seventh grade while every friend moved on.
A little lost alien saw what nobody else did and gave him the chance he never had. Do you think Rohit would have been just as happy without the powers as long as he had his friends?
