Rebel Ridge (2024)
Bad Cops Mess With the Wrong Man and Regret Everything
Rebel Ridge (2024) Full Recap
Terry Richmond is riding his bike down a quiet country road in Louisiana with his earbuds in and a backpack on his shoulders. He's on his way to the small town of Shelby Springs to help his cousin Mike. Then a police cruiser comes up behind him with its lights on. Terry doesn't hear the siren and the car rams him right off the road.
Two officers jump out with their guns drawn and order him to lie face down on the asphalt. Terry tells them he never even heard them behind him or he would have stopped. It's [snorts] not too late. They accuse him of running from the police and one of them asks if he wants to get tased.
The officers are named Marston and Lan. They search Terry's backpack and find a bag stuffed with cash. Terry explains very calmly that it's $36,000. 10,000 is for his cousin's bail and the rest is for a truck so he can start a business hauling boats. He sold his car and cashed out his share in Mr.
Lou's restaurant to get it and he tells them they can call the restaurant to check. Lan doesn't care. He decides it's drug money and he puts Terry in the back of the cruiser while they decide what to do with it. Terry stays polite the whole time, calling them, "Sir, it's not Chinese food." After an hour, they let Terry go, but they keep every dollar.
Lan hands him a receipt and tells him the money is suspected of being connected to drugs. Terry hasn't been charged with anything. If he fights for the money in court, they'll come after him with an arrest warrant. If he doesn't, they win by default. The officers even offer to call him an ambulance.
Then they drive off and leave him standing by the side of the road with his bleeding arm and his bent bike. Terry goes straight to the courthouse to post his cousin's bail. Anyway, Mike was arrested for a minor charge, but he's being held on $10,000 bail. The courthouse clerk, a smug man named Elliot, tells Terry there's nothing he can do without the money.
And the money is gone. Elliot is more interested in getting to a picnic than in helping. When Terry asks about a public defender, Elliot tells him this town doesn't have one. Find some more. Outside, Elliot's assistant, a young woman named Summer McBride, catches up with Terry. Over coffee at a diner, she explains what happened to him.
It's called civil asset forfeite. The police can seize money they think is connected to a crime even if nobody is charged. If they go to court, the case won't even have Tererry's name on it. It will literally read the township of Shelby Springs versus $36,000 because money has no rights and the police chief gets to keep the proceeds.
So you sure they took all your money? Summer heard he used some of it to buy a $900 margarita machine. Then Terry explains why the money matters so much. Mike is being transferred to a state prison on Thursday. In jail, Mike gave the police information about a dangerous gang, and some of those gang members are waiting for him in that prison.
Cool. If Mike goes there, he might not come out alive. Summer is 18 credits away from a law degree, and she knows what it's like to need help. She promises to have the paperwork ready if Terry can find the money in time. 18 credit shy of a JD. Terry calls his old business partner, an elderly restaurant owner named Mr.
Lou. He's the man Terry was planning to start the boat business with. Mr. Lou doesn't hesitate for a second, even though it's a lot of money. He agrees to send $10,000 in money orders by Monday. Next, Terry walks into the police station to report his money as stolen. A young officer named Jessica Sims takes his information.
Then Lan shows up and recognizes him. Lan tells Terry that filing a false police report is a felony. Then the police chief walks in. His name is Sandy Burn, a smooth, smiling man who acts like everyone's friendly grand. Hi there. Father. He lists all the charges Terry could face and tells him to turn off his phone's recording and get out.
Terry offers Burn a deal. If the police return $10,000 for bail, they can keep the other 26,000 and he'll disappear. Burn smiles and says, "That sounds reasonable." He tells Terry to come back at 9 on Monday morning. He can see his cousin and they'll put the whole thing to bed. But on Monday morning, Terry is told he's 3 minutes late.
The prison bus has already left on the chief's orders. He jumps on his bike and races after it down the highway. He catches up to the bus and rides right next to Mike's window, pedalling as hard as he can. Terry tells him to ask for protective custody and stay safe until he gets him out.
Then Terry gets more bad news. Mr. Lou can't send the money because police raided his restaurant and they did it at Chief Burns request. A half a dozen cops are tearing his place apart with drug dogs. All because Terry mentioned the restaurant in his statement. Mr. Lou is about to miss payroll.
Terry promises he'll make it right. Every door Terry tries is being shut in his face. It's off the table. Back at the courthouse, Summer has found something strange. While going through Mike's files, she noticed dozens of other cases just like his. People arrested for minor offenses with bail set way too high, held for exactly 90 days, then released.
Summer doesn't know why yet, but something is very wrong in this town. The judge caught her looking through the files and she's scared of losing her job. She has a little girl to think about. With nowhere else to turn, Terry rides back to the police station one more time. By now, Burn has pulled Terry's military record.
He sees that Terry never served overseas and he decides he isn't much of a threat. Burn meets him outside and tells him there's no deal. He only agreed to it to mislead him because Terry had no right to come into his station and set terms. Terry calmly explains the military planning method he's been following.
Primary, alternate, contingency, emergency. The bag of money was his primary. The deal was his alternate. Mr. Lou was his contingency. Now he's on emergency. Rifle expert badge. That's when Burn makes a mistake. He calls for backup and his officers come running. In seconds, Burn and Lan are on the ground.
Terry never deployed because he was busy teaching hand-to-hand combat to other Marines. He doesn't throw a single punch. He just puts them down, takes their weapons, and holds burn in front of him like a shield. Lan's hands are shaking, and he's scared the other officers might shoot him by accident.
Terry tells everyone to stay calm and walks the chief inside the station, keeping him between himself and the guns. Terry walks Officer Sims to the station's property room and tells her to open it. Inside there are stacks of seized cash and racks of weapons, enough to arm a small army. Sims's hands shake as she unlocks the cage.
He takes exactly $10,000 of his own money, nothing more. Then he has Sims walk him out past the crowd that has gathered outside. Burn even tells the onlookers that Terry is a veteran going through something difficult just to keep the peace. In the car, Sims drives while Terry sits in the back.
He tells her he isn't going to hurt her and that they both want to avoid gunfire. She tells him she likes her old police car, even though the others got new ones. A mile up the road, Terry gets out and runs for the courthouse with the bail money. Chief says we need to diversify late.
Summer rushes to file the bail paperwork and Elliot counts the money. The bail goes through. Then police swarm the courthouse. Terry doesn't resist. He lies down on the floor with his hands behind his back and they tase him anyway. They lock him in an old moldy cell under the building that they call the catacombs.
Instead of taking Terry to jail, Burn drives him out of town. On the way, the chief explains himself. Shelby Springs is the last town in the parish with its own police force and the state keeps cutting their budget. That cash in the cage is how they survive. Then they pull up at a hospital and Burn tells Terry that Mike was stabbed in prison.
Burn offers him a new deal. He'll give Terry the remaining $26,000, drop all charges, and even let him buy his truck. All Terry has to do is leave town and never come back. Burn makes it clear that if Terry ever returns, things will go another way. Like the margarita machine, Terry agrees because all he cares about is Mike.
He doesn't even want the money anymore. But when he gets to the hospital, it's too late. Mike is dead. Terry sits on the hospital bed in silence with a hospital bracelet still on his wrist. The next day, Summer drives Terry to pick up his new truck in her old Volvo. The only thing in her life that's fully paid off.
On the way, she tells him what she's found. Dozens of people were held for 90 days for no clear reason, and someone wanted Mike stuck in jail. She asks for his help to find out why, but Terry says no. He just wanted Mike alive and now that's impossible. Grab it. That night, Summer gets home and someone is waiting in the dark.
She's attacked and drugged in her own house. Barely awake, she calls the one person she trusts. Terry is already at the edge of town when his phone rings. He turns his truck around. Terry finds her on the floor, sick and shaking. How can they hold it against you? Summer won't go to the hospital because if it gets reported, she'll lose any chance of getting her daughter back.
Years ago, she pawned a riding mower that wasn't hers. And because it still had a snowblower attached, the charge became a felony. Her husband used it to take their daughter, and she couldn't afford a lawyer. So, what they put in you, the dosage. The judge later sealed her record, and she went to work for the court so she'd never be defenseless again.
She's been clean ever since. Now somebody has made it look like she's using again. The next day at work, they force her to take a drug test. Terry decides to leave town for good. Supposed to go see the judge first thing. Before he goes, he promises Summer he won't forget about Mike.
On the way out, Lan pulls up behind him in his own pickup and flags him down. Lan walks up to Terry's window and tells him he tore up the winning lottery ticket the chief gave him. Then he throws a gun into the truck, so it looks like Terry was armed. Then Lan opens fire. Terry gets hit in the shoulder, but he slams on the gas and gets away.
Lan chases him down the back roads until Terry crashes the truck near a river. Bleeding, Terry hides the truck under a bridge and makes his way through the woods. He finds Summer and the two of them head for the only safe place they know. Now the police have a story ready that Terry pulled a gun on an officer.
They go to Mr. Lou's restaurant. The old man turns out to have been a field medic in the Korean War. on the Chinese side. He cleans out the bullet wound in Terry's shoulder and stitches him up on the restaurant table. Summer brings snacks and coconut water from a gas station. Terry tells Summer he's done running.
He wants to know why Mike had to die. Summer lays it all out. The town keeps people locked up for 90 days on high bail for minor charges. Terry admits that when the chief let him go, he felt like his whole life was in front of him again. He even thought he heard Mike's voice telling him it was okay.
But it wasn't Mike's voice. Nothing about this is okay. And these cops don't get any more chances. That night, Terry and Summer track down Elliot the Clark at his kids sporting event. Elliot is terrified and he won't answer their questions directly. But he drops a hint. A couple of years ago, the town lost a big lawsuit over police misconduct.
Everyone thought the settlement turned things around. It actually turned them upside down. Then they go to the home of the town judge, an old man sitting in his armchair in front of the TV. He admits the whole scheme. An illegal search turned into a wrongful death, and the lawsuit nearly bankrupted the town.
The settlement was supposed to shut Burn's department down, but the chief went out and got his own money through forfeitures instead. Under the settlement, every police car has a dash cam and the courthouse stores the footage. It can be used as evidence, but only if someone asks for it within 90 days. After that, it's deleted.
So, whenever an arrest goes wrong, they cut the charges down to a misdemeanor and keep the person in jail with no lawyer for exactly 90 days. That's what happened to Mike. Before they go, Terry tells Summer it's okay if she wants to step back and think about her daughter. Summer says her girl has never left her mind.
If she gets her back, she wants her daughter to know her mom has a spine. Terry and Summer break into the courthouse basement that same night through a small window near the ground. With flashlights, they search through boxes until they find the memory cards from the police dash cams. Mike's video should be in there, but the police arrive and someone starts a fire to destroy the evidence.
Flames spread through the basement. Terry gets out with the memory cards, but Summer goes back to destroy her fake drug test and the police catch her. Terry gets on a police radio frequency and reaches Lan. Lan makes him an offer. Summer for the memory cards at Sunrise at a place called Rebel Ridge.
Terry agrees, but he has his own plan, and it doesn't involve going to Rebel Ridge. While Lan and most of the police wait at Rebel Ridge, Terry drives his truck straight through the wall of the police station. He takes down Chief Burn, handcuffs him to the property cage, and arms himself with weapons from the evidence room. While they wait, Terry tells the chief something funny.
Before 2 days ago, he'd never been in a real street fight, only the gym. Burn says he's been in plenty. Then Terry lays out his new deal. He's seizing the chief's weapons, and once Summer is safe, he'll turn himself into the state police. Someone inside the department has been quietly warning Summer.
And Terry thinks it's Officer Sims. He's sure she's the secret informant, the one they call Serpico. He tells her he knows who she is and that even if she doesn't have his back, he knows she has Summers. But Sims pulls her gun on him instead and tells him she'll shoot if he moves an inch.
Then the rest of the police roll in. Lan smashes the memory cards in front of Terry. Then he reveals that Summer is passed out in the back of his car. He drugged her again and plans to say she did it to herself. She could die from an overdose and Lan says, "At least it'll be peaceful." That's when Marston can't take it anymore.
Rebel Ridge (2024) Ending Explained
He protests and he's the real Serpico. Burn shoots Marston in the leg right in front of his own officers. He tells them it was Marsten or all of them because they can't turn on each other and everything explodes. Terry moves fast. He takes down officer after officer without killing anyone, using every trick he ever taught.
Then maybe don't shoot. Bleeding on the ground, Marston tells Terry to turn on the siren of the nearest police cruiser that saves the last few minutes of dash cam footage, including Burns shooting a police officer. The camera records the 3 minutes before the lights are switched on. Then Marston talks Terry through giving Summer a dose of Narcan from the center console.
Just pick a nostril and spray it," he says. After a terrifying minute, Summer starts breathing again. The three of them speed off in the cruiser with the police right behind them. The police radio is full of officers trying to decide whose side they're on. Burn orders them to stop the stolen cruiser at any cost, but Sims makes her choice.
When she gets the chance, she rams the chief's car instead, spins it off the road, and arrests him. After that, the rest of the officers stop chasing. They escort the cruiser to the hospital with their lights on and the state police are on their way. Summer and Marston are rushed inside on stretchers.
Terry sits alone in the waiting room, still in his torn shirt, holding the recorder with the footage that will bring the whole town's police force down for the first time since he rode into Shelby Springs. Nobody is coming after him. Terry rode into town with a bag of cash and a simple plan to save his cousin and a corrupt police force took everything from him. He never wanted a fight, but he made sure Mike's death wasn't for nothing.
Do you think Terry did the right thing, or should he have left town when the chief gave him the chance?
