Mostly Ghostly Have You Met My Ghoulfriend (2014) Full Recap

A couple, John and Harriet, sit together to decorate some pumpkins for Halloween. As they joke about people who look like the decorations, their son, Colin, comes over to tell them that he's going to a friend's house. After Colin leaves, John notices that he hasn’t seen his other son, Max, around, but Harriet mentions that he went out to walk their dog. Elsewhere, Max continues walking the dog quietly around the neighborhood.

As they walk toward the entrance of a cemetery, the dog appears to be scared, but Max says there's nothing to be afraid of. He adds that even though the place is a little scary, nothing can hurt them because he's still wearing a magic ring, which can keep ghouls away from him. He also mentions that even a dangerous ghoul named Phears is scared of the ring, and that the dog doesn't have to be afraid of anything while he's around. After Max walks past the cemetery with the dog, Phears shows up at the gate and looks disgusted to see Max.

He also complains that Max has been hiding two kids, Nicky and Tara, from him, but that it won't be for long. After this, he walks toward the grave of a dead Russian lady named Emma and decides to wake her corpse. As Emma wakes up, she looks confused and starts wondering what's happening, but Phears just mentions that he has brought her back from her sleep to perform a sacred duty. Emma still doesn't seem to know what's happening, and Phears introduces himself as the most powerful dark spirit in existence.

He adds that he commands all the spirits in the cemetery, including Emma. As he asks if she understands, Emma says she does, and Phears mentions that she has to listen carefully to what he wants to tell her. Following this, he starts narrating how a parapsychologist named Michael Roland came across an urn of ashes that contained remnants of him. Michael thought of it as a regular artifact and decided to examine it closely in his lab.

One day, after Michael kept the urn on a shelf, it fell on the ground and released Phears back into the world. This made Phears very happy because getting released gave him an opportunity to achieve his ultimate goal, which is to create an army of the dead that will do what he wants and possess the bodies of the living so that he'll become the most powerful force on Earth. Emma doesn't think Phears’ plan is good, and she tells him that when people die, they always want their souls to go to the afterlife so they can see their loved ones. As she says that they wouldn't want to spend their time with Phears, he looks pissed and says that he wants to create a new breed of ghosts among the living.

Emma still believes his plan isn't good, but Phears says she can't tell him what to do, and that she has no choice but to obey him. As he then continues his story, he talks about how Michael and his wife, Michelle, discovered his plans and created a ring and a magic spell that could fight off ghosts and keep Phears trapped in the cemetery. Phears got pissed by this, and he decided to turn Michael's family into ghosts so that they would never interfere with his plans. After doing this, Michael's kids, Nicky and Tara, managed to escape, and since their parents knew that they would be safe, they refused to tell Phears where they hid the ring.

Shortly after, Max and his family moved into Michael's house while Phears’ cat, Mauler, remained stuck there. Unfortunately for Phears, Max eventually found the ring and has been using it to protect Nicky and Tara, who are now his two ghost friends. As Phears complains that Max has disrupted his plan for a while, he says that Emma needs to get the ring off Max's finger. Emma doesn't get how this concerns her, but Phears lies to her that Max is the one holding her spirit back from moving on to see her loved ones in the afterlife.

Emma looks pissed by this, and she calls Max an evil boy. Phears looks pleased with this, and he tells Emma that he wants her to climb into Max's body as a berserker ghoul and take control of it. He adds that Emma has to get Max in trouble at school and with his parents before looking for a way to remove the ring from his finger. He also mentions that once Max is powerless, he'll be able to snatch Michael's kids and complete his mission, while Emma will be free to move into the afterlife.

As Phears looks excited about his plan, Emma seems confused but ready to do whatever it takes to gain her freedom and move on to the afterlife. Meanwhile, on Max's way home, he sees a girl named Cammy and her friends outside the city hall. Max happens to have a crush on Cammy, and as she admires his dog, he looks excited and impressed. He then asks if she would like to work with him on their science midterm.

Cammy says she's really busy decorating the haunted house for Halloween, and that he can come around when she's done because it will be very scary. Max jokes that he's not scared of anything, and that his two best friends are ghosts. Cammy and her friends are shocked by this, but Max quickly corrects himself and says that he just has friends who like movies that have ghosts in them. Cammy says she'll still be expecting him to come to the haunted house, and Max mentions that he'll be there.

Shortly after, Max gets home, but before he goes inside, Nicky and Tara appear in front of him. As they ask where he has been, Max says he was talking to Cammy. Nicky seems impressed by this, but Tara says they don't have time for that because their parents have been missing for a year now. Max says he thinks he really has a shot at getting Cammy to be his date for Halloween, and that he'll just try to make her see that he's normal.

Tara says he doesn't have time for that, but Max tells her not to forget that he has a life. Tara looks sad to hear this, but Max apologizes and says that he didn't mean to be rude. Tara and Nicky don't seem to think much about it, and they mention that they'll see him upstairs. After they disappear, Max heads inside and sees that his Grandma and cousin are there.

Max looks happy to see his Grandma, and she seems just as excited as he is. Almost immediately, Harriet tells Max that one of his friends just called to remind him about their PE test tomorrow. Max looks disappointed by this, but John encourages him and says that PE isn't so bad. His grandma also talks about the benefits, but Max says he doesn't like the rope-climb test they're going to do tomorrow.

John gives Max some tips on how to go about it, but he still seems disappointed that he'll have to climb a rope tomorrow. John then tells Max to ask Colin for some pointers because he's quite good at rope climbing. Following this, Max heads to his room and hears a cat inside. As he looks confused, Colin enters the room, and Max asks if he can hear the cat.

Colin doesn't hear anything, and he says it's not possible for Max to have a cat because their parents won't like it. He then tells Max that tomorrow is the school's senior photo day, and that he's planning to do something big to impress the girls in the class. Max asks if he wants to do a magic trick, but Colin says he wants something bigger. Just then, Max gets Nicky and Tara to pick up Colin's shoes and beat him with them.

As Colin looks shocked, he asks how Max is controlling the shoes. Max then tells him a fake magic word that he can repeat in front of his classmates. Colin looks happy about this, and he thanks Max for helping him. Max then asks for some pointers for his rope-climb test, but Colin just tells him not to fall.

Max doesn't think this is enough, but as Colin leaves the room, he just heads to his computer to look for anything that can help Nicky and Tara find their parents. Almost immediately, Max shows them an article, which mentions that Michael was doing research at the old county city hall. Tara says it was just two days before their parents disappeared, and Nicky suggests searching the city hall for whatever they can find because that's where Michael was last seen. Nicky says they have to do it tonight because Halloween is coming, and Phears will have the power to free his ghost army on that night if they don't stop him.

After this, Max agrees to help them, and they all leave the house together. When they get to the city hall, Nicky opens a window for Max so he can enter the building. As he then sees the haunted house decoration, he looks amazed and says that Cammy has done a really nice job. Shortly after, they check the archives in the city hall and find a box with the name Roland on it.

Since it could contain information about Michael’s work, Max carries the box and prepares to leave. Surprisingly, he bumps into Cammy inside the building, and she asks what he's doing there. Max says he came to check out the haunted house, and Cammy asks why he couldn't just wait till it was open. Max says it's scarier this way, and that he just loves a good scare.

Cammy then asks what's in the box, and Max says it's just some things for a project he's working on. After this, he asks what she's doing inside the building, and she tells him that she just came back because she left her phone. She then mentions that it's weird to see that Max is inside the building alone because most people would be really scared to be there at night. As Max says he's different, and that nothing scares him, Nicky and Tara suddenly appear behind Cammy, and this scares him.

Cammy doesn't understand what just happened, but Max looks around and says he's only scared of wood rot. He also seems nervous and ends up saying some things that don't really make sense. After she says she'll see him tomorrow, Max leaves the building and returns home with Nicky and Tara. As they start checking the things inside the box, Max complains about not having enough time to sleep.

He also talks about his upcoming PE test and how he'll get punished if he fails. Tara then says that she and Nicky can show up in his gym class to help him with the rope. Max looks happy about this, and he says that aside from passing the test, Cammy will also be impressed. Tara seems jealous, but Nicky says he'll do anything to help Max.

The next day, at school, Max goes to meet Cammy while she's sitting with her friends. He then asks if she would like to meet up later so they can do some extra credit for science class. As Cammy struggles to come up with what to say, one of her friends jokes that she loves him. Cammy then tells Max that she's still really busy, and that her science grades are pretty good.

Max says it's not a problem, and he mentions that he can't wait for their haunted house date. Before Cammy responds, two kids come over to talk to him about a new game they just got. Max seems embarrassed by this, and Cammy walks away with her friends. Max then pays attention to the kids and tells them that he's interested in playing the game with them tonight.

Shortly after, Max heads to gym class, and the teacher, Coach Freeley, tells all the students about the test. After this, she calls them one by one to climb the rope. When it gets to Max's turn, he looks scared and wonders if Tara and Nicky will show up. Just as they do, Max tries to talk to them about how they'll lift him, but Freeley doesn't seem to get what he's saying.

Suddenly, Nicky and Tara fly him up while he pretends to climb the rope, and Freeley looks surprised. As Max also shows off some skills after reaching the top, everyone looks amazed, and Cammy seems impressed by this. After a while, Tara tells Max that it's time to go down, but he tells her to wait a little because Cammy is enjoying his performance. Tara doesn't like this, and as she leaves him, he falls down on Freeley.

Cammy quickly helps him up and asks if he's fine, but Freeley looks disappointed because she's the one who nearly got hurt badly. Max doesn't seem to care about this because he has already passed the test, and he just smiles at Cammy. Shortly after, as Max is leaving school, he sees Colin and the other seniors taking a group photo. Max accidentally bumps into the camera setup, and Colin's classmates look pissed at him.

Colin also looks embarrassed, but he eventually comes out to show everyone the magic trick Max taught him. Max looks happy to see him humiliating himself, and Colin then realizes that his brother set him up to look stupid in front of his class. After the boys return home, Colin doesn't seem happy about what Max did, but as their parents ask how his day went, he says it was great. Suddenly, everyone hears the sound of a cat in the house, and as John and Harriet look shocked, Colin says it's probably coming from Max's room because he talked about a cat the previous day.

Harriet looks disappointed because she's allergic to cats, but Max says he doesn't have one in his room. John suggests checking Max's room, and he heads there with Harriet and Colin. As Max remains at the dining table, Nicky and Tara appear before him and show him a book of spells that they found inside the box. Before Max can say much, they ask where his family is, and he mentions that his parents and brother think there's a cat in his room.

Nicky and Tara mention that Mauler is there, and that he got stuck in the room after Max condemned Phears to the cemetery. Max looks surprised by this, but he mentions that if everyone can hear the cat, then it's not Phears’ ghost cat. Max then heads to his room, and as his parents continue looking for the cat, Colin brings it out of Max's dresser. Max looks shocked by this, but his parents scold him for bringing a cat into the house.

Max accuses Colin of putting the cat there, but his parents don't believe him. John then says that Max is grounded, and that he can no longer use the computer. Max looks disappointed by this, and as he sees Colin taking the cat back to where he took it from, he realizes that his brother set him up. Elsewhere, Phears tells Emma how to get to Max's house.

He also describes where Max's room is, and he tells Emma not to make a mistake. He adds that she has to take over Max's body and frustrate him until he gives up the ring. As Emma continues listening to Phears, he mentions that when Nicky and Tara no longer have Max's protection, he'll be able to use them as leverage to get their dad to give him what he wants so he can achieve his goal. Emma says she's not ready to go because she's sleepy, but Phears mentions that she'll have enough time to sleep when his plan is complete.

Following this, Emma changes form and heads to Max's house. However, she just goes into Colin's room and takes control of his body. The next morning, Max tries to apologize to his parents for what happened the previous day, but they still seem pissed at him. As John mentions that Max needs to be like his brother, who is more disciplined, Colin gets to the table and looks strange.

John doesn't seem to understand what's wrong with him, and Harriet notices that he's still wearing his pajamas. Suddenly, his eyes glow strangely, and he falls asleep on his plate of pancakes. John looks confused by this, and he wakes his son and gives him a bottle of syrup for his pancakes. Colin just drinks the syrup, but as it tastes weird, he runs into the living room and starts scattering the things inside.

Max finds this funny and starts recording it, but as he suddenly sees Colin levitating, he realizes that there's something wrong with his brother. He then says some magic words and uses the ring to free his brother and send Emma's spirit away. Surprisingly, Colin doesn't remember what happened, and Max realizes that his brother was possessed. When Emma returns to the cemetery, she tells Phears what happened, and he scolds her for controlling the wrong body.

Emma says he gave her the wrong directions, but Phears mentions that she'll have to try again at Max's school tomorrow. The next day, at school, Max answers a question well in class, and Cammy seems impressed. She then suggests working together as partners for their midterm assignment. Just as Max agrees, Emma enters the class and changes form before taking control of his body.

Suddenly, Max starts acting weirdly, and he even pours some water on his teacher. He also plays with the fire extinguisher and scatters the class before two of his classmates manage to bring him down. His teacher looks pissed by this and tells him to go straight to the Principal's office. Max doesn’t seem to get this, and he mentions that he can’t remember what he did.

When he gets to the Principal's office, Nicky and Tara appear before him, and he tells them what happened. Tara then looks at him closely and mentions that there's a woman inside him, but that she's now sleeping. Max looks scared that she might wake up and make him do crazy things again. As Nicky mentions that Phears is likely behind what happened, the principal comes into the office and scolds Max for what he did.

Max then tries to plead his innocence, but she doesn't believe him. As Nicky pranks the principal, she thinks Max is responsible because she can't see anyone else inside her office. She then tells him that if he wants to play games, she'll let him do that. After this, Freeley punishes Max by getting him to run around the school field several times.

Nicky and Tara try to get him to leave school with them, but he tells them to leave him alone because they always get him in trouble. As he continues running around the pitch, Nicky and Tara look disappointed, and they just disappear. Shortly after, Max gets weak and falls to the ground, but Freeley says she can't let him rest because of what he did. Max begs her for just a few minutes of rest, but Freeley refuses to listen to him.

As she talks about soccer practice, Emma wakes up inside Max and says that she likes soccer. She then takes Max to join the training and dribble past all the players before scoring a great goal. Cammy and Freeley are shocked by this, but as Emma sleeps off again, Max falls to the ground. His teammates quickly carry him up, and Freeley says she didn't know Max was a soccer star.

She adds that he might be her team's secret weapon in the Championship final game tomorrow. Max looks pleased with this, and as everyone walks away, Cammy shows up and talks about his performance. She adds that she would like to go on a date with him, and that if he comes early to the Haunted house, she can give him a tour. Max says he's interested, and as she walks away, he dances happily.

He eventually gets home late that day, and as John asks what happened, he mentions that he had soccer practice. John doesn't believe this, but he just tells Max to quickly change his clothes so he can help out with the trick-or-treaters. When Max gets to his room, Nicky and Tara show up to tell him that they've figured out the name of the ghost inside his body. Nicky also says that Tara can release the woman from his body, and Max agrees to try this.

As Tara then calls Emma’s name, she comes out of Max's body looking younger, and this leaves him shocked. Emma also doesn't understand what just happened, but Tara explains that they've just set her free, and that's why she's looking younger. She adds that she and her brother will set Max free as well because they no longer want to be a burden. Emma says she has heard Max saying good things about them, and he also mentions that even though he gets frustrated sometimes, he still recognizes them as his friends.

Nicky and Tara then hug him, but John suddenly shows up and tells Max to change his clothes already. After this, Max changes his clothes, and as he sits outside with his friends, Nicky and Tara talk about being ghosts like Emma, but she tells them that they aren't. She says they're not real ghosts, and that Phears only did something to them. As she mentions that their parents are alive, Nicky and Tara look happy to hear this.

They also ask if she knows where to find their parents, but Emma says she has no idea. She says she can only feel that they're alive, but that Phears is the one who knows where they are. Nicky then asks if Emma can help them find their parents, but she says she has no idea how to do that. Nicky eventually says there's a spell that can help, but that they'll have to take Emma back to her grave in the cemetery.

Max says they can't do that because Phears is strongest on Halloween, but Nicky mentions that Max's powers will also be strong. Following this, Max goes to ask his parents if he can leave the house, but they reject his request. However, Colin defends Max and tells their parents that his brother is going for a special training session for his soccer game tomorrow. John and Harriet look happy to hear that Max is now on the soccer team as a star player, and they agree to let him go out.

Max looks surprised by this, but Colin says he's just repaying his brother for having his back when he misbehaved earlier. As he then asks what happened to him, Max says he was possessed by a ghoul, but Colin doesn't believe this. Almost immediately, Max leaves the house and heads to the cemetery with Emma, Nicky, and Tara. When they get there, Max realizes that he left the ring in his pocket after soccer practice.

Suddenly, Phears shows up and says that he can now complete his mission. He then pushes Emma into Max's body and freezes Nicky and Tara in place so that they won't escape. Luckily, Emma uses her acrobatic skills to help Max escape so he can retrieve the ring. However, Phears sends his ghouls after Max, and as he runs into the city hall, Emma helps him take them down.

Everyone looks impressed and thinks it's part of the show, and Cammy also seems happy that Max is helping her keep the haunted house lively. As Max heads out, Colin commends him for the great performance with his friends. However, Max tells Colin that the Ghouls are real, and that they're not his friends. As the remaining ghouls come outside to attack Max, he and Colin fight together to destroy them.

Everyone still thinks it's part of the show, and they applaud Colin while Max heads home. When he gets there, he quickly takes the ring, but before he leaves, he sees Mauler inside his room. He looks shocked by this but eventually decides to take Mauler to the cemetery with him. Shortly after, he returns to the cemetery and sees that Phears has trapped Nicky and Tara in an old crypt.

Max then uses the ring to create a portal that can be used to send Phears away. The power of the ring also releases Nicky and Tara, and as Phears sees the portal, he tells Max to get rid of it. Max refuses to do this, but Phears grabs Tara and threatens to hurt her. Max still maintains his stance and shows Phears that he has Mauler.

Phears looks shocked by this, and Max tells him to release Tara if he wants Mauler back. After Phears releases Tara, Max tricks him by sending Mauler through the portal so he can follow her. This works quite well, and Emma eventually gets released so she can go to the afterlife. The next day, Freeley subs Max into the game for the final few minutes.

As he doesn't seem to understand what he's supposed to do, Nicky enters his body and tries to help him. Unfortunately, Max gets fouled before he can score, and Nicky jumps out of his body. As Max's team gets ready to take a freekick, he looks shocked to see that Nicky is no longer inside him. However, Nicky and Tara encourage him to be himself.

Cammy also cheers loudly for Max, and as the freekick gets played, he scores an amazing winning goal. Everyone looks happy about this, and Max gets celebrated by his teammates, Freeley, and his family. Cammy also congratulates him for scoring, and she thanks him for helping her out at the haunted house. Max says it was nothing, and Cammy asks if he still wants a tour of the haunted house.

Max says he does, and they both head to the city hall. When they get there, Cammy says that Max seems mysterious, and he suddenly tells her that he has ghost friends. Cammy looks really shocked, but this doesn't stop her from confessing that she likes Max. He looks happy about this and eventually heads back home while dancing around.

When he gets to his room, he checks his computer with Nicky and Tara, and they look surprised to see a message from Michael and Michelle, who mention that they've already met Emma. They also tell their kids to never lose hope because they'll see each other soon. After the message ends, Nicky and Tara look happy about this, but they suddenly notice that the computer wasn't even plugged in, and this leaves them shocked. After finding a special ring that can be used to ward off ghouls, Max decides to use it to protect Nicky and Tara from getting caught by Phears.

Despite having his own interests, which are sometimes interrupted by Nicky and Tara, Max still fights for them and eventually gets rid of Phears. In this story, we learn that helping people is always worth it, even when it might not be easy.
