The Slumber Party (2023) Full Recap
Hypnotist, that stuff isn't real. A girl named Megan packs her bag and gets ready to leave for her friend's slumber party. Megan is looking forward to starting high school in a week, but she still seems bothered because she's afraid of trying new things. Almost immediately, her dad calls her phone, and she asks why he's doing that, even though they're both in the same house.
He says he's just making sure Megan's phone is charged and that he also wants to mention that Megan's friend Paige is already at the house. Megan says she'll be down in a minute and no one ever will. And as she ends the call, she seems annoyed that she's still using an outdated phone that her dad got for her because he believes that too much screen time is harmful. Megan isn't happy about using the phone and she has always made sure no one sees it with her.
Shortly after, she heads downstairs to meet Paige. But her dad and his partner, who are both therapists, stop her and encourage her to always make good choices. Her dad's partner also says some words of affirmation to make her feel confident. Paige finds this weird and jokes about how they're always speaking in inspirational quotes.
Megan's dad then tells Megan to have a lot of fun at the slumber party. He also gives her the sweatshirt he made for her. After this, Paige and Megan leave the house to meet Paige's brother, Mikey, in his truck. Mikey drives the girls to the house of their friend, Anna Maria, who is having a slumber party to celebrate the day before her birthday.
Pretty sure my dad was calling Amber Alert if they knew your brother. After Megan gets out of the truck, she sees her crush Jake riding his bike along with some of his friends. Megan cannot take her eyes off him and she tells Paige that Jake is wearing his favorite hoodie. Paige finds this funny and Megan continues talking about the things she likes about Jake.
Just as Jake stops at his house and looks at the girls, Paige tells Megan to act cool and avoids staring at him. Megan doesn't pay attention to what her friend is saying, and she just keeps staring at Jake. Almost immediately, Paige realizes that Megan's skirt is stuck in the door of the truck. Oh my god, is Jake or Mir his perfect teeth?
Megan still doesn't hear what her friend is saying because she's distracted. And as Mikey drives away, her skirt accidentally gets removed. Megan looks embarrassed because Jake is looking at her, but Paige quickly covers up for her friend and suggests going inside already. Meanwhile, Anna Maria is currently having an argument with her parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Guerrero. Mrs. Guerrero tells Anna Maria that her dad is getting married to someone else and that Anna Maria has to include her stepsister Veronica in her plans for the slumber party tonight. He's getting remarried on my birthday. Anna Maria doesn't want this and she says it's bad enough that her dad is getting married on her birthday.
Mr. Guerrero then mentions that Anna Maria's birthday is the only free day the venue had before his new wife gives birth to Anna Maria's baby sister. Anna Maria says the last thing she needs is another baby sister. And as her younger sister, Penny, hears this, she seems offended. Yeah, Jake.
Mrs. Guerrero then tries to convince Anna Maria that her dad's new baby is a blessing, but she still doesn't seem to care about it. Mr. Guerrero realizes that his daughter is mad at him for having a new wife, and he says he's leaving already. He adds that he'll drop Veronica off after her parkour lesson.
Anna Maria finds it funny that Veronica is taking parkour lessons, but her dad tells her to keep her comments to herself. He adds that he'll be at the house tomorrow morning to pick Anna Maria up for their annual birthday hike. Anna Maria says she's not going with him. Uh-uh. Ew. But Mr.
Guerrero mentions that they always go every year. Anna Maria insists that he shouldn't bother this year, but her mom tells her not to do that. Anna Maria then says she doesn't get why her dad wants things to be the same for him, even though he's the one making things different. Mr.
Guerrero reminds Anna Maria that he's her dad, and if she keeps talking to him anyhow, she won't like what comes next. Mrs. Guerrero doesn't like this, and she tells him not to talk to their daughter like that, as she also advises him to read books on gentle parenting. Anna Maria just tells them to stop arguing. saw this documentary on Netflix about a woman who hypnotized and she never went back.
She then mentions that even though her dad can force her to come to his wedding or invite his stepdaughter to her slumber party, he can't force her to follow him on a hike because she won't go. Mr. Guerrero looks sad when he hears this and he decides to leave. As he opens the door, he sees Paige and Megan standing outside.
After they greet him, Megan says she often forgets that he doesn't live there anymore. Paige signals to Megan that she shouldn't have said that. Pretty sure the cockroach juice will keep it from getting infected. And Megan quickly apologizes. As Mr. Guerrero leaves, Anna Maria shows up and welcomes her friends into the house.
She then takes them to the basement, which she has already decorated for the slumber party. After the girls do some exercise, Megan notices that Anna Maria has new shoes. Anna Maria jokes that it's a guilt gift from her mom, but Megan says the shoes are still nice. Thanks. Anna Maria then tells her friends that they need to do something big for her birthday because they're now in high school.
She says they could break into their new school, West Oak High, to free the baby ducks they saw in the science lab during their visit. Megan jokes that Anna Maria is obsessed with the ducks and Paige suggests going to Target to connect the shopping carts with zip ties. Anna Maria finds this funny and talks about a prank she pulled off with Paige a while ago. Megan looks confused and asks when they did that and Anna Maria realizes that she shouldn't have talked about it.
Megan then figures out that they had a sleepover without her and even though she seems unhappy, she says it's fine. Paige and Anna Maria then explain that it was a while ago and they didn't invite Megan because they know how she feels about Six Flags. Megan asks how many other things they do without her and Paige says it's not that many. Megan looks surprised because it's obvious that her friends do a lot of things without her.
That they often think she's scared of trying new things. Megan says she knows and that it's something she has struggled with since she was four. Almost immediately, Megan says tonight will be different because she'll get out of her comfort zone and try new things. She adds that she'll make sure Anna Maria doesn't remember how pissed she is at her dad and Veronica.
Paige looks excited and asks if Megan is serious and she says that she is. Fine. It is time. Shortly after, Megan suggests watching a movie, but Anna Maria says she doesn't want to watch TV anymore. She suggests toilet papering Jake's house, but Megan looks nervous. She also doesn't seem interested in going to Jake's house because she's shy, but her friends insist that she has to come with them as they're about to drag her out of the basement.
Veronica arrives and says she's sorry for being late. She eventually trips over and spills the pie in her hand, and Anna Maria looks pissed. All good. Veronica then brings in her bag and introduces herself to Megan and Paige as Anna Maria's favorite stepsister. Anna Maria doesn't seem pleased to have her around and she mentions that they're technically not stepsisters until after the wedding because her dad and Veronica's mom might still change their minds.
Veronica says it's unlikely because they love each other. And as she calls Anna Maria's name with a weird accent, debit, Anna Maria seems pissed and complains about it. Megan then asks where Veronica goes to school and she says she's homeschooled. As Anna Maria insults Veronica again, Megan and Paige look confused and tell Veronica to feel at home while they talk to their friend privately.
Veronica then jokingly tells them to beg Anna Maria to stop hurting her self-esteem. When the three girls are alone, Megan and Paige point out that Anna Maria was a little too harsh on Veronica. She's going through a lot right now. Anna Maria says it's her birthday and that she's supposed to spend the night with only her friends.
Megan says she understands, but that Anna Maria is going to make the night awkward if she isn't friendly. Anna Maria then complains that she doesn't want a stepmother, stepsister, or even a baby halfsister. Megan and Paige feel directly attacked because they both have stepparents, but Anna Maria says that's not what she meant. Megan then asks what she meant, and she says she just wants a regular family.
This still doesn't make Paige and Megan happy. Never felt this way. Because they don't have regular families, but they decide to forget about it. As they head back to meet Veronica, Penny shows up and scares them. The girls look scared, and Anna Maria asks what Penny wants. Penny says she wants to hang out with them, but Anna Maria says she can't allow that because Penny cannot keep a secret.
Penny says she can, but Anna Maria still sends her away. That night, a struggling actor named Mesma, who also works as a hypnotist, arrives at the house for a performance. When Penny sees him at the door, she says that hypnosis isn't real. Mesmer then scares her away, and Mrs. Guerrero eventually allows him to go to the basement to meet the girls.
When he gets there, the girls look excited, and Veronica says that Mesmer is her birthday gift to Anna Maria. Anna Maria and Paige don't seem to have a problem with being hypnotized, but Megan talks about a bad experience she once saw in a movie. Her friends convince her to change her mind, and Mesmer tells them to lie on the floor. He then hypnotizes them and tells them to be their most authentic selves for the night.
He adds that they won't remember anything in the morning until he calls Anna Maria to give her a trigger word. The next morning, Megan wakes up and notices that the room is scattered. As she wonders what they did last night, she heads toward the bathroom and sees Penny leaving. After she enters the bathroom, she looks in the mirror and sees that she's missing an eyebrow.
She looks scared and wonders what happened, but she can't seem to remember anything. Almost immediately, she notices that she's wearing Jake's hoodie. And even though she doesn't know how she got it, she feels much better. Just then, she hears a strange sound coming from the bathtub, and she sees some ducks inside.
As she wonders what really happened last night, she leaves the bathroom and wakes Veronica and Paige. Veronica is now wearing her clothes backward, and Paige sees Veronica's name on the wall. The girls look confused because Anna Maria is nowhere to be found and Megan suggests calling her phone. Suddenly, Paige notices that Megan is wearing Jake's hoodie and she looks surprised.
Megan says she can't remember what happened and she also mentions that Anna Maria isn't picking up her phone almost immediately. Megan finds Anna Maria's phone and looks worried when she sees blood on Paige's hands. Paige doesn't understand how she got blood on her hands. And as she washes it off, Veronica accuses her of killing Anna Maria.
Paige says she didn't do that, and she's sure Anna Maria is probably in her room. The girls head there immediately, but notice that Anna Maria isn't around. Megan looks worried, but Paige says it's possible that Anna Maria went on the hiking trip with her dad. Megan says Anna Maria didn't want to go and that her hiking boots are still in her room.
As the girls try to remember what really happened the previous night, Paige notices that there's toilet paper around Jake's house. The girls don't remember toilet papering Jake's house, but they decide to ask Penny if she knows where Anna Maria is. When they get to Penny's room, she denies knowing where her sister is. She also asks if Anna Maria is missing because she'd like to inform her mom.
However, Paige and Megan stop her from saying anything. I could film your posts or Penny says they'll have to do something for her to remain silent and Paige and Megan are forced to agree to her terms. When they return to the basement, Paige and Megan tell Veronica to contact Mesmer so he can give them the trigger word. Veronica then calls the person who directed Mesmer to her, but the number just goes straight to voicemail.
Megan looks worried and suggests calling her dad for help because Anna Maria might have been kidnapped. Paige says they can't involve adults yet and that they have to try to find Anna Maria on their own. Veronica supports this idea and suggests finding out how the ducks got to the bathroom. Paige and Megan realize that they came from West Oak High and they head there with Veronica to return the ducks.
When they get there, they notice that the door is locked and Megan says she doesn't really like the idea of breaking into high school. Paige says it's what they'll do, and Veronica offers to use her parkour skills to find her way inside. Megan doesn't like the sound of it, and Paige says she'll call reinforcements. Veronica.
Veronica. Shortly after, Mikey arrives, and Megan cannot believe that Paige really called her brother. Meanwhile, Veronica seems attracted to Mikey, and she cannot take her eyes off him. Mikey eventually finds a way to unlock the door, and the girls look impressed. Inside the school, it turns out that the principal is around, and she's trying to get the janitor to clean up a few things.
Paige and the others manage to avoid being seen, and she tells Mikey and Veronica to return the ducks. While she and Megan look around for Anna, Maria, Veronica looks really happy because she likes Mikey. And while they're in the science lab, they sing about how they're both attracted to each other. Paige eventually enters the lab with Megan, and she notices that the ducks are trying to escape.
Paige looks pissed and scolds Veronica and Mikey for not doing their jobs well. As they try to grab the ducks, Megan sees Anna Maria's shoe on the floor. She looks shocked and shows the others and they all start wondering how Anna Maria lost one of her shoes. After they leave the science lab, a duck follows them.
He's going to love me whether he likes it or not. And Veronica suggests keeping it. However, Paige doesn't support this and she tells Veronica to get rid of it. Veronica eventually gives the duck to Mikey, and she complains about how harsh Paige is. She also jokes that even though she's only Anna Maria's sister now, she could become Paige's sister in the future.
Paige doesn't like the joke, and as she gets pissed, Veronica screams. Unfortunately, the principal and the janitor hear this, and they start looking for the kids. Luckily, they manage to escape before the principal and the janitor catch them, and Mikey quickly drives away. After a while, Veronica notices that there's orange and maroon paint under the sole of Anna Maria's shoe.
Mikey then says that orange and maroon are the colors of West Oak's rival school, Hillside Prep. Mikey says Hillside hates West Oak because of what he and some other students did to them a while ago. Megan and Paige look worried about this and they wonder if Anna Maria was kidnapped by students from Hillside. Shortly after, Mikey drives them to Hillside Prep, but says he can't come with them because he's Hillside's number one enemy.
Megan and Paige start thinking about how they'll break into the school, and Mikey secretly returns the duck to Veronica, who says she knows that he loves her. After he leaves, Veronica accidentally drops the duck, and Paige looks shocked to see it. Veronica then says it's a gift from her man, and this gets Paige pissed because she cannot believe that Mikey really likes Veronica. Megan then calms her down and suggests finding a way to break into the school.
Suddenly, they hear a marching band nearby and decide to hide near the bushes to spy on the hillside students. While they're there, Veronica farts and sneezes, and this makes it easy for the students to see them. Interestingly, the leaders of the band recognize the girls and accuse them of stealing Hillside's Homecoming Hedgehog float. Megan says she thinks there has been a big misunderstanding, but one of the band's leaders tells her not to deny it because there's proof.
Just then, Megan sees a video of herself and her friends stealing the hedgehog float. Megan looks shocked and cannot remember when they did that. As she tries to explain herself, the band leaders don't care about this and they mention that they also have something that the girls want. Megan and Paige assume that it's Anna Maria and they try to clarify that the band members kidnapped their friend.
The band leaders suddenly interrupt them and tell them to bring the hedgehog float to a meeting point where they can do an exchange in 2 hours. Megan tries to explain that she doesn't know where the hedgehog float is, but the band members just ignore her. As the girls head home, Megan blames herself for everything that happened because she was the one who wanted to try new things. She also complains about how she could go to jail for stealing a hedgehog float.
As Paige and Veronica are about to start fighting, Megan yells at them to stop. Paige looks surprised because Megan never yells at her, but Megan mentions that she's just worried about Anna Maria. We're going to find her. She adds that they need to focus and do whatever they can to find their friend.
Suddenly, Veronica gets a call from someone who informs her that Mesmer is booked and he's at an Onion Fest. Megan and Paige don't have a problem with this and they decide to head to the Onion Fest to look for Mesmer. When they get there, they decide to sneak in through another gate, but this leads them directly to the stage. The girls are then mistaken for participants in the onion munch competition.
Before they can say anything, they are told to take their seats and prepare to eat the onions in front of them. They see Mesmer from the stage, but are unable to reach him because he's a little far away. Megan doesn't seem interested in eating the onions, but Paige encourages her and tells her to think of it like she's trying something new. Following this, the competition begins, but Megan quickly gets eliminated.
Paige soon follows and after some other contestants are eliminated. Veronica competes against the last man standing. After a few minutes, Veronica wins the competition, but the organizers soon realize that she's an impostor. As she jumps off the stage so that she won't be arrested, she lands badly on the ground.
The girls are eventually kicked out and banned from coming to future events. On their way back to Anna Maria's house, Paige suggests going to Jake's house to ask him some questions because there's clearly a reason why Megan is wearing his hoodie. Megan looks scared because she still gets nervous around Jake. Paige insists that they have to talk to him.
When they reach his house, Megan looks nervous, but Jake just comes over to greet the girls as he then talks about spending time with them last night. Paige looks shocked and asks if he was really with them. Jake says he was and that he even thought the girls came back to get the hedgehog float. When he opens his garage, he shows them the hedgehog float and the girls realize that they actually stole it.
As the girls start thinking of how they can get to the meeting point really fast, Jake suggests riding the float down the street. Megan looks scared but says she'll do it. On the way, one of the tires attached to the float hits a bump and Veronica and Paige get knocked off easily. Unfortunately, Megan is unable to control the float and as it hits a wall, she gets thrown off.
She lands inside a dumpster and as she looks disgusted, Jake helps her out. Shortly after, the girls meet the band members and mention that they came with the float. Before they return it, they ask the band members to fulfill their end of the deal. Just then, the band's mascot returns Megan's outdated phone, which was found on the ground after the girls stole the float.
Paige doesn't know that the phone belongs to her friend, and she insults the band members for tricking them. As Paige and Veronica also insult the phone, Megan confesses that it belongs to her. The band leaders joke about this and Megan looks pissed. As the band leaders then mention that they didn't kidnap Anna Maria, Megan looks worried and tells Paige that it's probably time to tell Mrs.
Guerrero about everything. Paige agrees to do this and she leaves with Veronica while Megan joins Jake on his bike. Get a room, love bird. When they get to the house, they notice that Mrs. Guerrero isn't at home. They then think about telling Mr. Guerrero, but they decide against this because they don't want to ruin his wedding.
Almost immediately, Veronica remembers the video the band members showed them and asks who recorded it. Jake says it must be Penny because she was with them last night. Paige seems pissed and tells Jake and Megan to take care of the basement. While she and Veronica go inside to get answers from Penny, Megan quickly changes her dirty clothes, and when she's alone with Jake, they both confess their feelings for each other.
After Jake leaves, Megan heads to Penny's room and meets Veronica and Paige, torturing Penny for answers by threatening to destroy her toys. Even though Penny initially refuses to say anything, she eventually mentions that she knows where Anna Maria is. She says that this morning when she entered the bathroom, she saw a note that Anna Maria left for her friends. She adds that she decided to keep it to show her sister that she could keep a secret.
As Paige then grabs the note, she realizes that Anna Maria went hiking alone. The girls immediately leave Penny's room and head to a nearby lake to look for Anna Maria, who is sleeping on a bench. As she wakes up, they see the tampons in her bleeding nose and ask if she's okay. Interestingly, Anna Maria also doesn't remember anything from last night, and she says she couldn't sleep much because she kept thinking about the terrible things she said to her dad.
