Birds Of Prey (2020) Full Recap

After a painful breakup with her longtime partner, the Joker, a lady named Harley Quinn decides to reinvent herself and open up to the possibility of new love. She cuts her hair, adopts a hyena, and begins engaging in fun activities to take her mind off her past relationship. One night at the club, she accidentally spills her drink on someone while messing around. The man doesn't look happy about this, and as he insults her, she breaks his leg.

Everyone at the club looks terrified, but the owner, Roman, quickly plays it down as a little drama. He then approaches Harley and complains that the man whose legs she just broke is his driver. Harley says he deserved it, and Roman assures her that he'll fire his driver. Before he walks away, he tells Harley to send his greetings to the Joker.

Harley then realizes that she still hasn't told anyone aside from her friends about her breakup with the Joker. Harley seems to like it this way because being with the Joker gave her immunity, which she probably won't get elsewhere. Shortly after, Harley heads out of the club and hears her friends talking about her recent breakup and how they're so sure she'll get back together with the Joker. One of them mentions that Harley isn't serious about the breakup because she's still wearing the Joker's special necklace, which he gave to her.

Another one adds that some people aren't just meant to be on their own. Harley looks disappointed to hear this, and she just walks away without talking to them. After a while, she comes across a gas truck parked just a few blocks from a factory called Ace Chemicals. Harley remembers Ace Chemicals as the place where she and the Joker used to visit a lot, and as she sees the truck, she comes up with an idea.

While the driver is outside the truck, Harley quickly gets in and drives toward Ace Chemicals. Just before the truck gets to the gate, Harley throws the special necklace out the window before jumping out. Following this, the truck crashes into the factory and causes a loud explosion. Coincidentally, a detective named Montoya is currently at a crime scene where some men have just been killed by someone with a crossbow.

While Montoya believes the men were killed by Roman's assassin, her colleague, Monroe, doesn't agree. As they talk about this, they hear a loud bang and immediately head out to investigate what happened. When they get there, one of the cops at the scene gives Montoya the necklace he found outside the factory. She thanks him for this and tells Monroe that Harley and the Joker have broken up.

Monroe doesn't understand this, but Montoya explains that Ace Chemicals was their spot, and Harley has publicly updated her relationship status by blowing it up. Montoya says Harley definitely didn't think it through because all the criminals who want her dead will now start coming for her. Elsewhere, Harley is now back at Roman's club, where a singer named Dinah is on the stage, even though no one seems to be paying attention to her. Roman is also meeting with a man named Mr Keo, who he tries to convince to work with him to take over Gotham.

Keo doesn't seem interested in a partnership, but Roman tries to sweeten the deal by saying that he has just located the Bertinelli Diamond, and he's about to own the city. Keo insists that he doesn't need Roman's protection or partnership, and this leaves Roman disappointed. However, he still tells Keo to sleep on it so they can meet again tomorrow at the docks to discuss further. After Keo leaves the club, Roman looks impressed with Dinah's performance, and he praises her when she's done.

While Harley is trying to design a new business card for herself, Dinah sits next to her at the bar. Harley happens to be drunk, but she recognizes Dinah as the lady who just sang on stage. After she compliments Dinah for having a great voice, she asks if the singer knows who a Harley Quinn is. Dinah just calls her a clown, but Harley says that a Harley Quinn's role is to serve her master.

She implies that Dinah is like her because she's also working for Roman. However, Dinah says she's not who Harley thinks she is. Harley then gets emotional and tells Dinah that she and the Joker have broken up. As she says she's all alone for the first time in a while, Dinah mentions that she's welcome to the club.

Shortly after, while Dinah is leaving the club, she sees two men trying to kidnap Harley. Even though she initially doesn't want to interfere, she gets out of her car and confronts the men. As she beats them up, Roman sees her from his office window and looks impressed. He then tells his assistant, Victor, to inform Dinah that he wants her to be his new driver.

After Dinah beats up the kidnappers and drags Harley to her car, Victor shows up and tells her about Roman's request. Dinah says she's fine with the singing gig, but Victor implies that she has to do what Roman wants. Dinah looks disappointed by this, but she doesn't say anything else. Shortly after, she arrives at her apartment building and sees a girl named Cassandra sitting on the stairs while her parents argue inside.

Dinah feels sorry for Cassandra and gives her a dollar bill to get something for herself. She also tells Cassandra not to worry about the situation because things will surely get better. A while later, Dinah heads to work and drives Roman to the docks. There, he hangs Keo and his family and gets Victor to peel off their faces because Keo refused to work with him.

Dinah doesn't know what's happening, but after Roman is done, she drives him back to the office. The next day, as Dinah leaves her apartment, Montoya shows up and introduces herself as a detective. She then mentions that she had an agreement with Dinah's predecessor, and he told her about a shipment involving a diamond. Dinah says she's not interested in having an arrangement with a cop, and Montoya tries to warn her that she's working for a dangerous man.

Dinah still doesn't care, but Montoya asks what Dinah's mom would think of her working for someone like Roman. Dinah immediately stops, and Montoya says Dinah's mom would want her to use her powers to do good. She adds that Dinah's mom was a good woman who put the lives of others before hers. Dinah doesn't seem happy about this, and she talks about how her mom was killed for being a good woman.

Dinah says she won't make the same mistake by working with the cops, and Montoya apologizes for what happened. She says it wouldn't have happened under her watch, but Dinah just walks away. Elsewhere, Victor tells Roman about what the crossbow killer recently did. Roman seems pissed that he doesn't know who the crossbow killer is, and as Victor calms him down, Dinah walks in.

While she's looking at a mask in Roman's apartment, he seems impressed and decides to tell her about all the masks he has. Suddenly, Victor mentions that Harley blew up Ace Chemicals to send a message to the Joker. This gets Roman distracted, and he looks excited to hear this. Since it's now clear that Harley has broken up with the Joker, Roman tells Victor to get his boys to find her.

He also orders Dinah to follow Victor somewhere for a pickup. Shortly after, Dinah receives a small box on Roman's behalf, but Victor collects it from her and tells her to get the car ready. He then opens the box and confirms that the diamond is there. Interestingly, Cassandra roams the area and picks pockets for fun.

As she's about to steal something from Dinah's pocket, Dinah catches her and sends her away. Despite this, Cassandra continues stealing from people, and she also takes the small box from Victor's pocket. Before she goes too far, she gets arrested by some cops. Almost immediately, Victor notices that the diamond is missing, and he realizes that Cassandra stole it.

He and Dinah try to stop the cops from taking Cassandra away with the diamond, but they're unable to do so. While in the cop car, Cassandra starts hiding the things she stole. As she sees the diamond, she runs out of places to hide it, so she just swallows it. Meanwhile, Harley buys a sandwich from her favorite vendor.

As she leaves the shop, Montoya shows up at the place to arrest her. Harley doesn't seem ready to surrender, and she quickly runs away. Two of the criminals who want her dead try to attack her, but she manages to get past them. As she gets back to the roadside, she sees Roman's driver pointing a gun at her.

Harley wonders if she'll ever eat her sandwich, but before she thinks of what to do next, Montoya knocks her to the ground. Harley loses her sandwich in the process, and this leaves her devastated. She then throws a garbage bag at Montoya, and as the detective gets distracted, she manages to escape. However, she gets stopped by another criminal named Happy, who wants to take revenge for when she dared the Joker to paint his face.

Harley begs Happy not to hurt her because she's not even with the Joker anymore, but he doesn’t seem to care. Before he can hit her with a metal bar, Harley sees a penny on the ground and bends to pick it up. Coincidentally, the crossbow killer shows up and shoots an arrow that kills Happy. Harley looks shocked and realizes that the arrow could've been for her, but she doesn't seem to know who the crossbow killer is or why the lady would want her dead.

The crossbow killer eventually rides her bike away from the scene, and Roman's men arrive to grab Harley and take her to meet their boss. Elsewhere, Montoya arrives at the police department and sees Cassandra sitting by a colleague's desk. She seems interested in knowing why the young girl was brought in, but when she moves close to the desk, Cassandra complains that she stinks. Montoya then changes her clothes and heads to the office of her Captain, Patrick.

Interestingly, Patrick and Montoya used to be partners a few years ago, but he eventually stole all the credit for Montoya's big case and got a promotion while she remained a regular detective. When Montoya gets to Patrick's office with Monroe and a representative from the DA's office, she talks about Roman being responsible for the recent murders in Gotham. Patrick believes Montoya is making strong allegations, and he mentions that Roman's family name is on half the schools and museums in Gotham. Montoya doesn't think that makes him immune to the law, but Patrick and the representative from the DA's office point out that they don't have enough evidence to bring Roman in for questioning.

Montoya then talks about the diamond that Roman's former driver said Roman was always talking about. Montoya says she has done some research and figured out that Roman has found the Bertinelli diamond. As she asks if Patrick remembers the Bertinelli massacre, she reminds him of how the mafia family was gunned down by their enemies, who wanted access to their super-secret offshore bank accounts. Interestingly, the details of the accounts were said to have been encoded in the atomic structure of a 30-carat diamond.

The diamond got lost at that point, but with it being the key to the massive Bertinelli fortune, Montoya says Roman has been trying to get his hands on it. Patrick still doesn't believe her because she has no proof, and he hands over the case to Monroe. Montoya looks disappointed by this, but Patrick doesn't seem to care that she has been working on the case for a long time. Elsewhere, Victor and Dinah return to Roman's office to inform him that they don't have the diamond.

Victor says they never got their hands on it, and Dinah looks shocked because he's lying. Roman seems pissed that a young girl stole the diamond, but Victor says he'll get it back. He also informs Roman that Harley is already in the building, and it's time to kill her. Almost immediately, Roman heads down to where Harley has been cuffed to a chair.

Harley begs him to forgive her for everything she has done to him, but Roman refuses to listen to her. Just as he tells Victor to peel her face, Harley looks scared and says that she knows he's looking for a diamond. She says she can help Roman find it if he releases her, and he seems interested in this. Since Roman has nothing to lose if he sets her free, he says he'll give her till midnight to find the diamond or he'll kill her.

After Harley leaves, Roman tells Victor to put a bounty on Cassandra's head to make it more interesting. When Dinah sees this, she looks worried and calls Montoya to tell her what's happening. Almost immediately, Harley walks into the police department and attacks the cops with paint rounds. She then heads toward the holding cells, and as she struggles to handle the controls properly, she destroys them.

After this, she goes through the gate, and the criminals in the cells lament about the different things she did to them. Harley just ignores them and finds Cassandra. She then asks Cassandra for the diamond, but the young girl looks confused. Almost immediately, the cell doors open, and all the criminals head toward Harley.

Before they can attack her, she beats them up, and Cassandra sneaks out of the holding area. Unfortunately, some gangsters have already entered the police department and are looking for Cassandra. One of them nearly grabs her, but Harley quickly comes to her rescue. While Harley fights the men, Cassandra tries to find her way out.

One of the gangsters then grabs her, but before he can leave with her, Harley shoots him. After he falls to the ground, Harley sees the man's phone and realizes that there's a $500,000 bounty on Cassandra's head. She looks shocked by this, but before she can do anything, Montoya enters the room and points a gun at her. Harley recognizes Montoya as the cop who knocked down her sandwich earlier, and she looks pissed.

Montoya tells Harley to drop the phone, and she says she'll do that. However, Harley acrobatically throws the phone at Montoya to knock her out. Following this, Harley leaves the police department with Cassandra in one of the impounded cars in the garage. Shortly after, one of Harley's enemies starts chasing her again, but she quickly gets Cassandra to throw a dynamite out of the car to blow the person up.

As Cassandra does this, she asks who the person was, and Harley says it could be one of her enemies or someone who wants to claim the half-million-dollar bounty on Cassandra's head. Cassandra looks shocked and says Harley has the wrong girl because she's not worth that much. However, Harley just asks for the diamond. Cassandra says she doesn't know anything about a diamond, but Harley stops the car and scolds her for lying.

Cassandra then confesses that she swallowed the diamond, and Harley looks disappointed. Shortly after, they both head to a supermarket to buy some supplies and laxatives for Cassandra so she can use the toilet and recover the diamond from her stool. While they're still buying a couple of things, Cassandra steals Harley's business card from her pocket and asks how long she has been a mercenary. Harley looks shocked and impressed to see her card with Cassandra, and she says she'd have to learn how to do that later.

Harley then asks if Cassandra will try to run away, but she says she won't because she's better off with someone who doesn't want to chop off her body to get the diamond. Harley seems pleased to hear this, and Cassandra asks how she can be like Harley. She says she enjoys being a pickpocket, but she just wants more. Harley says no one can be like her, but that the first thing Cassandra has to learn is that paying is for losers.

Suddenly, Harley runs out of the store with the things she bought, and Cassandra looks impressed. They then head to the shop of a man named Doc. Harley introduces Cassandra to Doc and says that nothing happens in Gotham without him knowing. She adds that Doc is the only one who cares about her.

Shortly after, Harley takes Cassandra to her room. Even though the place looks scattered and small, Cassandra still looks impressed, and she sees Harley's hyena, which she has named Bruce. Harley seems happy to have Cassandra around, and they eat and watch TV together. After a while, the crossbow killer enters Doc's shop and says she has heard that he knows all the bad guys in Gotham.

Doc says he doesn't know her, and she introduces herself as Huntress. Interestingly, it turns out that Huntress’ real name is Helena, and she's the only member of the Bertinelli family that survived the attack. Even though she was in the room during the massacre, one of the assassins saw her alive and felt sorry for her. He then sneaked her out of the house and took her to Sicily to stay with his father and brother, who were both assassins.

The men trained Helena from a young age, and as she got better, she started thinking about revenge. Fifteen years later, she's now back in Gotham, and she has been killing everyone involved in her family's massacre. Meanwhile, Montoya gets the DA's representative to help her unlock a phone she took from one of the gangsters who broke into the police department. This helps Montoya figure out that Roman placed a bounty on Cassandra's head.

However, the DA's representative believes Montoya is doing things wrongly, and she reports the situation to Patrick. Montoya is shocked by this, and as Patrick tells her to drop her badge and gun, she gladly does this because she doesn't think being a cop matters anymore in catching bad guys. Elsewhere, Victor informs Roman that Harley got the kid but ran away. As Roman shouts in anger, he hears a lady laughing at her friend's joke.

Roman assumes that she's laughing at him, and he humiliates her in front of everyone. Dinah doesn't like this, but as she's about to walk away, Roman stops her and asks if she'll betray him. Dinah says she won't, and Roman dances with her. Helena happens to be inside the club, but no one knows she's the popular crossbow killer.

Elsewhere, a cop knocks on Harley's door, and she quickly tells Cassandra that they have to escape through the window. Before they can do this, someone throws a flaming object into her apartment. The room gets destroyed, and Harley is unable to find Bruce. This makes her sad, and as she wonders how her enemies found her, she realizes that Doc must've told them.

She then heads down and sees Doc packing his things. Harley looks surprised, but Doc confirms that he told her enemies where she lives because they were offering a lot of money. Harley says she thought he cared about her, but Doc mentions that it's just business. After he leaves, Harley looks sad and says he's right about focusing on his business.

She then goes to a payphone and calls Roman to ask if she'll be safe after dropping off Cassandra. Roman says she will, and Harley tells him to meet her at the amusement park. After the call ends, Roman looks excited and tells Victor to meet up with Harley. He also orders Dinah to go with Victor, who asks if he should bring back Harley and Cassandra.

Roman says he only wants the diamond, and that Victor can kill them. Dinah doesn't like the sound of this, and she secretly texts Montoya to come to the amusement park. On the way, Dinah looks nervous, and Victor suspects that she's up to something. As he sees a text on her phone implying that she has told someone where they're going, he tells her to pull over because he needs to use the restroom.

When Dinah stops, Victor gets down and calls Roman to inform him about Dinah's betrayal. Roman looks pissed by this, and Victor asks if he should kill Dinah. Roman says he'll meet them at the amusement park instead, and as the call ends, he looks pissed and puts on his mask. At the amusement park, Harley ties Cassandra up in the toilet.

Cassandra says she thought they were friends, but Harley mentions that she has no choice. After she leaves the restroom, she hears a knock on the door and looks surprised. As she opens it, Montoya knocks her back into the room. Harley looks shocked to see Montoya again, but they soon start fighting.

Even though Montoya is with a gun, Harley still manages to get the upper hand and knock the former detective out of the window. Almost immediately, Victor shows up and shoots Harley with a poisoned dart to temporarily paralyze her body. Dinah doesn't think it was necessary, but Victor says she doesn't know Harley like he does. While Victor is making fun of Harley, Dinah finds Cassandra in the restroom and tries to help her escape.

Before she can even release Cassandra, Victor enters the restroom and sees the laxative on the washing hand basin. He then realizes where the diamond is, and he tells Dinah to cut Cassandra open. Dinah thinks he's joking, but he threatens to kill her if she doesn't do it. He also mentions that he and Roman know about her betrayal, and they'll end up killing her.

Dinah doesn't want to cut Cassandra open, but as Victor continues trying to force her, Helena enters the room and shoots him with an arrow. Victor looks shocked and tries to shoot her, but Dinah stops him and stabs him with the arrow to kill him. After she throws him off, Montoya enters the room and tells Dinah to help Cassandra. Suddenly, Cassandra picks up Victor's gun and tells the ladies to stay away from her.

She also mentions that she thought Harley was different. Harley has removed the dart from her neck, and as she stands up again, she reminds Cassandra that she had no choice. Helena says she's leaving because she has no business being in the room anymore, but Montoya stops her and accuses her of working for Roman. Helena quickly denies this, and as she's about to call herself Huntress, Montoya figures out that she's a Bertinelli.

Harley and Dinah look shocked because they know the story of her family's massacre, and Helena mentions that she has killed everyone responsible for it. She adds that Victor was the last person, but Montoya says Roman is still alive. Helena believes she has no business with him, but Montoya says Roman was the one who sent the assassins to kill her family. She also mentions that Helena has to help her and the other ladies take him down because he'll still come for the diamond.

Almost immediately, Roman arrives with his army of criminals, and the ladies see this. Cassandra looks sad because she knows the criminals are all there for her, and Harley feels sorry for her. She then tells the others that they have to fight for Cassandra because Roman also has a reason to kill them. The ladies agree to do this, and Harley shows them her secret stash of weapons in the room.

As Harley and the other ladies grab the guns in the stash, Cassandra picks up the grenades. Meanwhile, Roman tells the criminals that it's time for them to repay him for all the times he has helped them. He says he'll pay anyone who brings Cassandra to him, but that Harley and the others can be killed. Before the ladies can leave the room, some of the criminals stop them.

However, the ladies fight well and escape through a slide. They eventually land in a room where they notice that they're now surrounded by criminals. The ladies do their best to kill the men, and they also protect Cassandra while at it. After they're done beating up all the men inside, the ladies look excited as they head out.

However, as they nearly reach the entrance, Roman shoots Montoya. The others are shocked by this, but before they realize what's happening, one of Roman's men snatches Cassandra away from them. As Roman leaves with Cassandra, Harley checks up on Montoya and looks relieved to see that she's wearing a bulletproof vest. Montoya then gives Harley her gun, but it turns out that there's only one bullet inside.

Birds Of Prey (2020) Ending Explained

Dinah and Helena also run out of bullets and arrows, respectively, and as they see Roman leaving, Harley says they have to do something. Montoya says Dinah knows what to do, and as she thinks about this, she tells the ladies to cover their ears. Following this, Dinah heads out and screams to release a massive sound wave to take down all the criminals outside. Harley then goes through easily and chases Roman's car.

As she nearly reaches it, another car knocks her down. Luckily, Helena quickly helps her up and gives her a boost. Harley then kills the men in the second car before going after Roman's car again. When she reaches it, she kills the driver and the guard inside. Before she can grab Cassandra, she sees the car about to crash into another one, and she quickly jumps off.

Roman manages to move the steering wheel to avoid a major crash. After he gets down, he leads Cassandra down a pier. Harley quickly follows them, but she's unable to see them through the fog. Roman says Harley is making a mistake by coming after him because he's the only one who can protect her.

He adds that she can't stand on her own, but Harley doesn't believe this. She then mentions that Roman's protection is based on the fact that people are scared of him like the Joker. As she says he should be scared of her, she shoots her only bullet at a statue. Roman shows up when he realizes that she's out of bullets, and Harley says sorry to Cassandra for not protecting her.

Cassandra also says she's sorry for stealing Harley's ring, but Harley doesn't understand this. Cassandra then shows Harley one of her fingers, which has a bomb pin on it. Harley figures out that Cassandra has kept a bomb in Roman's pockets, and she quickly throws him off the bridge. As they then watch him explode, Cassandra hugs Harley, and the other ladies meet them there.

The next morning, they head to a nearby restaurant to get breakfast. While they're there, Cassandra heads to the toilet to get the ring, and Harley follows her. Montoya then talks about how they made a good team earlier, and Helena and Dinah agree. Montoya adds that they'll have to continue cleaning up the city because it won't be long before someone else tries to take over from Roman.

After this, Helena gets her family's money from the diamond, and she uses a share of it to fund her crime-fighting outfit with Dinah and Montoya called Birds of Prey. Meanwhile, Harley sells the diamond itself and makes some money, which she invests in her little startup called Harley Quinn and Associate. She also finds Bruce and makes Cassandra her apprentice. As Harley leaves the shop where she sold the diamond, she drives around Gotham with Cassandra and Bruce, and they head to their new home together.

After Harley breaks up with the Joker, she becomes a target for nearly every criminal in Gotham. Roman eventually catches her, but before he can kill her, she offers to help him find the diamond he’s looking for. While on the quest to find the diamond, Harley realizes that Cassandra has swallowed it. As she then figures out that Roman expects her to cut Cassandra open to get the diamond, she teams up with Montoya, Dinah, and Helena to protect the young girl and kill the evil crime boss.
